GROFVERT - Of Kalamazoo, MI, Loving husband and dad, Paul died Saturday, October 4, 1997 at his home. Paul was born April 8, 1926 in Kalamazoo, the son of John and Hattie (BLEEKER) GROFVERT. During W.W. II he served in the U.S. Army and for forty years owned and operated Top-O-Hill Poultry Farm. He was a member of the Twin Lakes Reformed Church, where he served on Consistory and taught Sunday School, served on Alamo Township Zoning Board and Kalamazoo County Farm Bureau, was a 4-H leader and Alamo Little League baseball coach. Throughout his years, Paul touched the lives of many people. His charity and integrity were widely admired. His devotion to his church and family was an inspiration to all who knew him. On September 11, 1948 he was united in marriage to Eleanor FRENCH, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Allen GROFVERT of Holt, Anne GROFVERT and her husband, Dennis PACE of Dimondale, and David GROFVERT and his wife, Debra of Hamilton; tw! o grandchildren, Jennifer and John PAUL; in-laws, Patricia and Harry MOYLE and Norman and Betty FRENCH; several nieces and nephews. Cleo was a WW II Army veteran, was employed by National Gypsum over 30 years, retiring in 1980, and was an avid gardener, fisherman and hunter. On February 5, 1944, he married Hazel E. MARVIN, who preceded him in death on May 23, 1997. Warren was born June 13, 1927 and raised in Oak Park, Illinois where he attended Riverside High School. While a student at Seattle University, he joined the U.S. Air Force. Stationed in Tacoma, Washington; then in Fairbanks, Alaska, Bob received the opportunity to attend the Air Force Music School in Washington, D.C. Bob played String Bass and Trombone at the school and performed with the "Airmen of Note," Glenn Miller's dance band. The band toured Europe and the Middle East, opened for the Brussels World Fair and performed at the Music Festival at Bergen, Norway from 1957-1961. After being honorably discharged, Bob returned to Chicago, met up with an Air Force buddy and musician who introduced him to an advertising agency called Boulevard Recordings. Yes, that was Bob you heard on those Campbell Soup, V-8 and Miller Beer commercials in the 1960's! He spent a summer performing at the Wagon Wheel at Lake Tahoe. Bob also worked at the John Crane Packing Company. In 1! 975, he moved to Kalamazoo to take care of his parents, Mr. & Mrs. Lee Snow. He played for 24 years with the Battle Creek Symphony Orchestra, over five seasons with the Southwest Michigan Symphony and from 1985-2006 with the Kalamazoo Symphony Orchestra. In retirement, he spent his time doing what he loved most, practicing and playing music. Bob died November 5, 2007. Surviving relatives are his sisters, Phyllis and family in California and Carol and family in Chicago. A celebration of his life will be held on Friday, February 1st at 12:30 PM at the Kalamazoo Friends Meetinghouse, 508 Denner St., Kalamazoo. He was on March 24, 1916 in Old Mission, MI, the son of Walter Angus and Florence Irene (Ghering) LaBatt. He was raised on a fruit farm in Old Mission and it was there that he developed two life long avocations, gardening and fishing. Dee graduated from Traverse City High School in 1934. He obtained a B.S. Degree from Michigan State University and an M.A. Degree from Western Michigan University. From 1955 to 1960, Dee was a science teacher at Mendon High School. He was a Biology Instructor at W.M.U. until 1963. Dee joined the biology department at Ferris State University in 1963 and retired as associate professor of Botany in the fall of 1979. During his retirement years, Dee became an accomplished vintner of fruit wines. His small orchard and strawberry beds provided quality produce for the finished product. Dee and his wife, Mary, attended several Elderhostel seminars, including Ireland in 1988 a! nd England in 1991. Dee was an active member of the Michigan Botanical Club where he was an acknowledged expert on the flora of the Newaygo Prairie. He was active in the Michigan Audubon Society and the Nature Conservancy. Dee is fondly remembered by colleagues and friends and will be lovingly remembered by his family. Dee was married to Mary (McMullen) LaBatt on Nov. 23, 1938, in East Lansing. She survives, along with four children, Peter LaBatt (Susan) of Oxford, MI, Walter LaBatt (Judith) of O'Fallon, IL, Barbara Martin (James) of Muskegon, and Elizabeth LaBatt of Big Rapids; four grandchildren, Kimberly (Ploehn) Martin, MD, Philip Martin (Angel), Michael Barton (Marcie) and Suzanne LaBatt; three great-grandchildren, Alexander Ploehn, Alissa and Jessica Martin; two nephews, Charles Brayton and David LaBatt; one niece, Maxine Brayton. He was preceded in death by his parents; older sister, Margaret; younger brother, James and a grandson, Eric Barton. Cremation has been con! ducted. Chris enjoyed golf, snowboarding and jet skiing at his grandmother's home. He was a big Chicago Bears and Cubs fan and loved the Michigan Wolverines. He is survived by his mother, Linda (Al) Musall of Colon; father, Thomas Kilpatrick of Sturgis; grandmother, Elma M. King of Wolcottville, IN; grandfather, George Kilpatrick of Centreville. He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Richard King and grandmother, Eleanore Kilpatrick. He was born February 19, 1932 in Hastings, one of three children to the late Clarence and Myrtle (Cheeseman) Bump. Clarence was employed by General Motors Co. for over 25 years, until his retirement. He was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed hunting and fishing, woodworking, and was a great fan of the Kalamazoo K-Wings and Detroit Red Wings Hockey. On August 19, 1955, Clarence was united in marriage to Wilma Service in Hastings, who survives. Also surviving are four children, Cheri (Brett VerMeulen) Whitney of Kalamazoo, Robin (Mike) Harrison of Marcellus, Tamara (Jody Reynolds) Kemp of Kalamazoo, and Christine (Todd) Turcotte of Battle Creek; 13 grandchildren; 13 great-grandchildren; one sister, Dorothy Cappon of Woodland; one brother, Duane (Ann Marie) Bump of Woodland and several nieces and nephews. He was born to Robert L. and Helena Madge (Ballinger) Bryan. March 28, 1932 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. He attended Washington Junior High and Kalamazoo Central High School, class of 1952. He joined the United States Navy and served on the USS Henry W. Tucker during the Korean War. While in the Navy, he married Nola Jane Wells on December 27 1952. They recently celebrated their 55th anniversary. From that happy marriage came two sons, Steven Ward Bryan (wife Julie) of Ventura California and Robert Wesley Bryan (wife Jackie) of Otsego, Michigan. Also surviving are five grandchildren, Amanda, Elyse and Michelle Bryan of Ventura, California and Robert and Renee Bryan of Otsego, Michigan and two honorary grandsons, Michael and Mark Beverly of Kalamazoo. He is also survived by three brothers and one sister, Frederick Noah Bryan (wife Linda) of Portage, Jack Wayne Schiebergen (wife Polly) of Ludington, John James Bryan (wife Terri) of Fort Wa! yne, Indiana and Linda Lou Hyson (husband Dan) of Huntington, Indiana. Bob also had a close family relationship with his in-laws, Pam and Bill Ingraham of Texas Corners and Cyndy and Don Verhage of Kalamazoo. Bob was an inspector at General Motors for 28 .5 years where he was affectionately known as "BEAR". He was a member of Portage First United Methodist Church, Moose Lodge 88 and VFW Post 1527. In his earlier years he was an avid golfer, bowler and was a coach with Parchment Little League. He recently enjoyed watching his grandchildren participate in band, little league, rocket football and school performances. (GEARHART) THOMAS - 2920 Crystral [sic] Lane, age 87, Died Wednesday afternoon, October 16, 1996. Mrs. THOMAS was born October 12, 1909 in Arlington, SD, the daughter of Emil and Anna (OLSON) WETERBERG. She married Phil GEARHART on December 22, 1934, and together they owned and operated Phil's Supply Store in Marcellus for 20 years. She was later employed by Perrone Company of Walled Lake as an executive secretary. Phil preceded her in death on January 24, 1957. Myrtle married Floyd LIGHT October 8, 1960, who preceded her in death on November 14, 1964. She then married Homer THOMAS March 11, 1967 who preceded her in death on December 22, 1990. She was a member of the Oakwood United Methodist Church and was a life member of the Olympia Chapter, #274, O.E.S. Surviving are 2 daughters, Elizabeth and William DEE of Apache Junction, AZ, Carole and James RANSBOTTOM of Marcellus; one son, Richard and Alice GEARHART of St. Cloud, FL; 5 grandchildren, james and ! Sue RANSBOTTOM of Schoolcraft, Virginia RANSBOTTOM of Marcellus, Bob GEARHART of Marcellus, Bob GEARHART of Seattle, WA, Susan GEARHART and Kathy and Mathew BLATTMAN, all of Reno, NV; 4 great-grandchildren; one sister Rachel TRIPANIER of Waukegan, IL; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by a grandson John RANSBOTTOM; 2 brothers and 2 sisters. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 o'clock Tuesday at the Langeland Portage Chapel 411 E. Centre Ave. A Trust 100 Chapel with Pastor Bud Buchner officiating. Cremation has taken place with interment in South Portage Cemetery following the service. The family will meet friends beginning one hour before the service. TILLEMA - Portage, MI, died suddenly Thursday, August 29, 1996. Jerry was born December 18, 1957 in Vicksburg, MI, the son of Jay H. and Beverly J. (YONKERS) TILLEMA, and had been a lifelong area resident. He graduated from Portage Central High School in 1976, Jerry loved working on automobiles, and had been racing stock cars at Galesburg Speedway. He was currently a self-employed carpenter, and was known to help out many people as a handyman. On September 14, 1996, Jerry and his fiancee, Monica HATHAWAY were to be married. Surviving are Monica HATHAWAY and her family; his parents, Jay and Beverly TILEMA of Portage; a sister and brother-in-law, Sharon and Dann KLAASSEN; a niece, Jodi KLAASSEN, a nephew, Matthew KLAASSEN; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Services for Jerry will be held 1:00 Tuesday at Langeland Portage chapel 411 E. Centre Ave. A Trust 100 chapel with Pastor Harold Brown, of Ravine Road Baptist Church, officiating. (BURSON) TAYLOR - Schoolcraft, MI, died Friday evening August 30, 1996. Mrs. TAYLOR was born November 16, 1921 in Kalamazoo, Michigan a daughter of Clarence and Cora (SMITH) BURSON. She had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident. She was a member of Pleasant Valley United Methodist Church where she served as treasurer and membership recorder and participated in the Fun Club and Bible Study. She was also active in the Christian Womens Club and Girl Scouts. Shirley loved her family, especially her grandchildren and was always at their sport activities. She raised beautiful flowers of which roses, lilies, and peonies were her favorites. She was preceded in death by a daughter, Tracee Lee TAYLOR in January 1950; a brother, Harold BURSON; and a sister, Helen BUSSEMA. On September 22, 1945 she was united in marriage to Francis G. "Pete" TAYLOR who survives. Also surviving 2 daughters, Vickie (Dave) HYBELS of Kalamazoo and Jan (David) NEWHOUSE, Jr. of Port! age; 4 grandchildren, Tracee HYBELS and Jon HYBELS and his fiance Chelsea, and Kristine and Zachary NEWHOUSE; 2 sisters, Ethel Lou STAPLE of Kalamazoo and Gayle (Marvin) SMITH of Little Paw Paw Lake, Lawton; and several aunts, nieces, nephews and cousins. Age 67 Of Kalamazoo, MI Passed away Sunday, January 27, 2008 in Alamo. Joan was born September 18, 1940 in Duluth, MN, the daughter of Louis and Esther (Thompson) Kramnic. She was a 1960 graduate of Whitehall-Yearling High School in Columbus, OH and was an art major at Ohio State University in Columbus. While living in Washington, D.C., she became a master engraver. She loved dance and studied tap, ballet, modern jazz, ballroom and folk. Other interests include traveling to countries including Egypt, Greece and Italy to visit the ancient ruins. Joan was an avid cat fancier and belonged to the Mid Michigan Cat Fancier Association. She showed her beloved cats in Michigan shows for many years, making champions of many. She had completed a full length play and children's book and was working on a musical comedy. She was preceded in death by her parents and in 1999 a sister, Carol Yingling. Surviving are a brother, David Kramnic of Kalamazoo; a sister-in-law, Janice Arlington of Kendal; nieces, Cheryl ! Yingling, Tina Hochstetler and Tonya Hochstetler; a dear friend, Carol Stezowski. Friends may meet with her family from 10:00 AM until the time of service at 11:00 AM at Prince of Peace Lutheran Church, 1747 W. Milham, Kalamazoo, Rev. Paul Nuechterleine, officiating. Arlene was born June 16, 1928 in Salina, OK to Henry and Daisy (Woods) Canard. She was raised in Mountain View, Arkansas and attended Ouachita Baptist University. Arlene moved to Michigan as a young adult and lived in Comstock Township for over 50 years. She worked at the Sutherland Paper Company until leaving to raise her children. Later, she was self-employed and worked at Kalamazoo Manufacturing, before joining Pfizer, from which she retired. Arlene married John Paul (Jay) Kamerman on December 7, 1956. She enjoyed playing sports in her youth and took great pleasure in watching her children and grandchildren's sports and activities. There was not a more kind or generous person to be found and she will be missed by all who knew her. Arlene was preceded in death by her parents and siblings Julius, Nina and Benny. Surviving family members include her husband, Jay, and sons John! (Donna) of Richland, Dan of Kalamazoo and Jerry (Margi) of Grandville; daughter, Barb (Kevin) Vizard of Portage; nine grandchildren, Mike (Heather), Darrelyn, Caitlin, Andrew, John and Ryan Kamerman, Adam, Alexandra and Natalie Vizard; great-granddaughters, Megan and Alyssa Kamerman. Also surviving are siblings Curtis (Betty Jo) Canard of Richland, Harvey (Beverly) Canard of Temperance and Betty (Stan) DeDoes of Kalamazoo; many special nieces, nephews and their families. Visitation will be Wednesday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. TREBILCOCK - 1110 Denway Dr., Died Sunday evening, November 10, 1996 at Bronson Hospital. Mr. TREBILCOCK was born April 20, 1928 in Ishpeming, MI, the son of John and Eunice LAWER. He graduated from Ishpeming High School, after which he served in the U.S. Navy during the liberation of the Phillipines during World War II. He then graduated from the Michigan Veterans Vocational School at Pine Lake, Doster, MI. He retired as a printer from the Kalamazoo Public Schools. He was a life member of both the Ishpeming V.F.W. Post and the Kalamazoo D.A.V. Buck Crosby Post #6. He was a past Staff Sergeant in the Kalamazoo County Sheriff Reserve. On June 14, 1952, he was united in marriage to Marian Louella LUKENS, who preceded him in death. Surviving are cousins, Fred LOEHDE, Richard SCHWENKE and Shirley NAULT, all of Marquette, MI, and Terry LAWER of Ishpeming, MI; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Tracy and Evelyn LUKINS of Grand Rapids and Carl and Barbara MIL!
