He was born January 1, 1926 in Helena, Montana, the son of the late Robert and Lorena (Maxey) Beer. On September 3, 1949, he was united in marriage to the late Lillian Joyce Childress, in Pittsburgh, PA. Their marriage was sealed in the Salt Lake Temple on August 14, 1968. William served faithfully for many years in the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, as a branch rresident, on several High Councils and in other assignments. He loved to play golf, garden, sing with the choir and be with his family. He was an Eagle Scout and a member of the Order of the Arrow. He was a veteran of the United States Army and received a medical discharge in 1944. He graduated from Iowa State University with a degree in mechanical engineering and worked for more than 30 years with Dravo Corporation. He traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad during that time, working on infrastructure projects ! such as the Morgantown Lock and Dam in West Virginia, Taconite Harbor in Minnesota, Glen Canyon Dam in Arizona and a liquefied natural gas project in Lagos, Nigeria. He was included in a patent for an improved concrete bucket and patented other innovations as well. He later worked as a consultant with Pennsylvania Engineering Corporation and then as an independent HVAC engineering consultant. In September of 2000, William and Joyce moved to Kalamazoo from Clarksburg, West Virginia. Surviving are their four children, David (Joyce) Beer of Chicago, IL, Robin (James) VanderRoest of Kalamazoo, Lorena Wilson of Morgantown, WV and Paul (Rachelle) Beer of Taipei, Taiwan; 16 grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; two nephews, Robert and Jeff Beer; and one sister-in-law, Mary Alice Beer of Fairfield Bay, Arkansas. Preceding him in death are his parents; his wife, Joyce on June 13, 2001 and two brothers, Robert and John Beer. Funeral services for Mr. Beer will be at 11:00 AM on Satu! rday at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints (University Br anch Building), 910 W. Main St., with Bishop James E. VanderRoest, presiding. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest North Park. Friends may visit with the family from 6-8 PM on Friday (tomorrow) at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street. The family moved to Kalamazoo in 1957, where Lonnie attended the Kalamazoo Public Schools and graduated from Central High School in 1972. Lonnie was preceded in death by his sister, Henrietta (1991); his father (1996); a niece and two nephews. Lonnie is survived by his loving mother; daughter, Sophia T. He was preceded in death by his father, Robert N. Shaw. He loved spending time with his eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. "Bill" Of Portage Mr. Roon passed away February 2, 2008 at Heartland Health Care Center where he had been loved and exceptionally well cared for since early December. Bill was born on July 9, 1918 in Forrest Grove, MI, the son of the late Peter J. and Jennie (Bos) Roon. Not long after graduation from Hopkins High School (Class of"35") he met the late Maxine Scott and they married in 1939. Shortly thereafter Bill enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Together, Bill and Maxine raised 3 sons, who survive, Gary "Jack" Roon of Lawton, Thomas Roon of Kalamazoo and Peter (Debbie) Roon of Portage. As a contractor and owner of W. A. Roon & Sons, Bill built many custom homes, including much of Parkview Hills and Bronson Woods. He was an active member of the Home Builders Association for many years and served as president in 1964. Bill was a life-long sports enthusiast and especially loved baseball and softball. He was one of the founding fathers of Milwood Little League and spe! nt countless hours volunteering and being the #1 fan of his children and grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by one sister, Elvira Kramer of Saginaw, MI in 1992; and daughter-in-law, Pam (Tom) Roon in 2002. Surviving are his brother, Bud (Fran) Roon of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and sister, Lois (Gene) Norman of Hopkins, MI. Bill was a loving grandfather to 6 grandchildren, Jody (John) Meyers and Jason Roon of Kalamazoo, Casey (David) Pacheco of Houston, TX, Jennifer (Ryan) Tomlinson and Logan (Mallory) Roon of Portage and Matt (Cindy) Roon of Orlando, FL. He was also a great grandfather to Joey Meyers and David Pacheco and a very special "Popper" to Ty Tomlinson. Bill is also survived by some very special nieces and nephews, and extra special friends; Charlie Jako, Bill Diehl and his beloved Dorothy Guilfoyle. Art was born an American Citizen in Windsor, Ontario, Canada on February 15, 1933 the son of Arthur W. and Lucile (Reva) Redmond, Sr. He was a member of St. Augustine Cathedral for many years and currently was a member at St. Monica Catholic Church. Art was involved in funeral service all his life. Home in Windsor was a funeral home. He was a Licensed Funeral Director for over 50 years. He followed his father who established Redmond Funeral Home in 1934 at 330 N. Westnedge. Art founded Parchment - Redmond Funeral Home in 1976. He then worked with his daughter beginning in 1981. In 2001, Redmond Funeral Homes was relocated to 4100 S. Westnedge with daughter Martha Redmond-Cox. Art was past president of the Cathedral Ushers Club, St. Augustine School Board, and the Kalamazoo Area Catholic School Board. He was a member of Knights of Columbus Council 1616 3rd and 4th degrees. He had an avid thirst for hunting, fishing and golfing. Art was preceded ! in death by his parents, sister-in-law, Shirley Ferrara and niece, Loren Redmond. Art's most cherished gift was his family: wife, Barbara (Simonds) Redmond; three children, Bill and Kathy Redmond of Portage; Kathy and Joe Hayes of Coldwater; Martha and Bob Cox of Sherman Lake; seven grandchildren: Katie (Monte) McCollum; Kerry and Daniel Redmond, Scott, Greg and Jason Hayes and Grace Cox; siblings, Reva Redmond, Bob and Bonnie Redmond, Louis and Elaine Redmond, Irene and Joe Bennett and Thomas and Sue Redmond of Gobles; brothers-in-law: James and Mary Simonds and Bud Ferrara; sister-in-law: Betty Simonds, many nieces and nephew and special friends. He was an avid golfer and was inducted in the Kalamazoo Golf Hall of Fame. John was married to Margaret (Dutton) Kolodzieczyk for 68 years. She preceded him in death on January 16, 2008. John was also preceded in death by three grandchildren: Janine Ramona Kolodzieczyk, Krista Caye Kolodizieizyck and Mark-David Kolodzieczyk; a brother, Martin Kolodizieizyck and two sisters, Helen Freeman and Mary Byrd. She was born March 28, 1912 in Caldwell County, Kentucky, one of three children to Orie and Lydia (Ashby) Ladd. Louise worked as a bookkeeper for automobile dealerships until her retirement. He was born February 28, 1935, in Kalamazoo, the son of John and Anna (Keizer) Boven and was a lifelong resident. He served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean War. For 19 years, he was employed with Durametallic prior to his retirement and then worked at Bronson Place for 3 years. George was a longtime active member of the Haven Reformed Church. For many years he served as a volunteer with the Parchment Fire Department. He was also a past member of the Kalamazoo Elks Club and enjoyed bowling both in the couple's league and the church league. George was an avid sports fan and especially enjoyed watching his son play softball. On October 16, 1970, he was united in marriage to the former Mary J. Adams who survives. Also surviving are his twin daughters, Marilyn Boven of Ypsilanti and Marcia (Jeff) Flora of Portage; a son, Jon (Melissa) Boven of Parchment; four grandchildren, Ann Argue, Garth ! Charles Argue, Makenzi Boven and Jordan Caulder; a brother, Richard (Carole) Boven of Kalamazoo; nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; and by a sister, Katherine Shoemaker. On September 5, 1945 Cornelius was united in marriage to his loving wife, the former Adriana Slierendregt. Cornelius worked as a Firefighter and Chemist in the Netherlands. Upon moving to Chicago he worked as a Construction Supervisor. Upon retirement he moved to Clearwater, FL and moved to Kalamazoo in 2002. In Kalamazoo, Cornelius was a member of Heritage Christian Reformed Church. Cornelius was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years, Adriana; his parents; and 2 sisters and a brother. (Maxam) Age 83 Formerly of Vicksburg, MI and Melbourne Beach, FL Went to be her Lord on January 31, 2008 at the Hospice Hospital in Holland, MI. Beulah was the daughter of Charles and Valeria Maxam born in Vicksburg, MI on July 10, 1924. Her parents and three sisters preceded her in death: Ona May, Laura Maxam and Donna (Maxam) Christner. She has one surviving brother, Charles Maxam. In her 40's Beulah went to college earning an Associate degree in Psychology. Beulah enjoyed life with her husband of 57 years Donald B. Smith who preceded her in death in 2001. They enjoyed flying, particularly to Florida where they lived for 25 years. During Don's years in Rotary they sponsored several exchange students from Nigeria and Japan. Beulah was the church secretary at the Chapel in Melbourne Beach, Florida for many years and worked as a Hospice caregiver. Beulah has been living with her granddaughter Shannon in Holland the past four years. She is survived by Jennifer (Donald) Gust, D. Jeffry Smith, grandchildren: Amy Piper, Shannon Grose, Troy (S! hannon) Smith and Laura (Steve) Gill. She leaves behind seven great-grandchildren: Dalton, Levi, Nile and Ireland Gill; Jacqlyn Grose and Alexander and Faith Smith. "Bill" Of Portage Mr. Roon passed away February 2, 2008 at Heartland Health Care Center where he had been loved and exceptionally well cared for since early December. Bill was born on July 9, 1918 in Forrest Grove, MI, the son of the late Peter J. and Jennie (Bos) Roon. Not long after graduation from Hopkins High School (Class of"35") he met the late Maxine Scott and they married in 1939. Shortly thereafter Bill enlisted and served in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. Together, Bill and Maxine raised 3 sons, who survive, Gary "Jack" Roon of Lawton, Thomas Roon of Kalamazoo and Peter (Debbie) Roon of Portage. As a contractor and owner of W. A. Roon & Sons, Bill built many custom homes, including much of Parkview Hills and Bronson Woods. He was an active member of the Home Builders Association for many years and served as president in 1964. Bill was a life-long sports enthusiast and especially loved baseball and softball. He was one of the founding fathers of Milwood Little League and sp! ent countless hours volunteering and being the #1 fan of his children and grandchildren. Bill was preceded in death by one sister, Elvira Kramer of Saginaw, MI in 1992; and daughter-in-law, Pam (Tom) Roon in 2002. Surviving are his brother, Bud (Fran) Roon of Ft. Lauderdale, FL and sister, Lois (Gene) Norman of Hopkins, MI. Bill was a loving grandfather to 6 grandchildren, Jody (John) Meyers and Jason Roon of Kalamazoo, Casey (David) Pacheco of Houston, TX, Jennifer (Ryan) Tomlinson and Logan (Mallory) Roon of Portage and Matt (Cindy) Roon of Orlando, FL. He was also a great grandfather to Joey Meyers and David Pacheco and a very special "Popper" to Ty Tomlinson. Bill is also survived by some very special nieces and nephews, and extra special friends; Charlie Jako, Bill Diehl and his beloved Dorothy Guilfoyle. Lawrence was born April 27, 1917, in Decatur, Michigan, the son of Ralph and Flora (Loveland) McGowan. For most of his life he was a resident of this area and was involved in many types of farming throughout the years, especially tree farming and had raised Christmas trees for 56 years. On his property was a very special pond that created many years of enjoyment for all of his family. Lawrence enjoyed collecting coins and woodworking as hobbies; he also loved poetry and had written his own autobiography. He was a longtime active member of the Galesburg United Methodist Church. He was a member of the City Farmers Club, the Farm Bureau and the Michigan Livestock Exchange for many years. In 1959, he was elected as Supervisor of Charleston Township; was a 12 year member of the Kalamazoo County Board of Supervisors (Chairman in 1964). In 1971, he was elected to a 2 year term on the new K! alamazoo County Board of Commissioners and served on the Kalamazoo County Road Commission for 12 years. He had served on the Kalamazoo County Fair Board several years; was active with the Pythian Lodge; had worked with the Kalamazoo County 4-H for over 12 years and was a member of the Ramona Lane Square Dance Club for 15 years. On July 1, 1939, he was united in marriage to the former Marjory Backus who preceded him in death on May 30, 1998. He was also preceded in death by his parents; a sister, Maxine Abnet and a brother, Hershal McGowan. Surviving are three daughters, Carol (Wayne) Holbrook of Climax, Barbara (David) Randolph of Climax and Vicki (Greg) Hall of Battle Creek; nine grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; a sister, Olive Miller of Portage; a brother, Gordon (Gertrude) McGowan of Portage; nieces and nephews and a special friend Elaine Nigg. Cremation has taken place. The family will receive friends from 11:00 AM to 12:00 PM on Wednesday, February 6 at the Ga! lesburg United Methodist Church (111 West Battle Creek St.) where a Me morial Service will be conducted in the church sanctuary beginning at 12:00 PM with Pastor Mona Joslyn officiating. Following services the family will receive friends in the church fellowship hall for a time of food and fellowship. A private family interment will be held in Roof Cemetery, Climax.
