Ruth was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and retired as secretary / treasurer from Unifab Corp., after 50 years. She was an avid reader who also enjoyed knitting, talking on the phone, and watching hot-air balloons. She also loved to travel, especially to Florida and to Tennessee to visit cousins. She loved sitting for her great-niece and nephew when they were younger. She previously resided in Ypsilanti, MI and at Colony Cove in Ellenton, FL. Barbara retired from the Registrar's Office at Eastern Michigan University. Barbara was preceded in death by husband, Albert Odell in 1987 and by a special friend, Herron Thornberry in 1999. Surviving are two sons, Peter (Rusty) Graham of Richland and Michael (Cindy) Graham of Schoolcraft; three grandsons, Peter (Sherry) Graham, Christopher (Kristi) Graham and Andrew Graham; five great-grandchildren; a step-daughter, Anne (Eugene) Bracken of Belleville, MI and two step-grandchildren, Amy Bracken and Connie Denton. During the Korean Conflict, he served with the U.S. Army. He had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School and Western Michigan University. He was employed as a sales representative with K.V.P., until his health declined. He enjoyed woodworking and spent many summers improving and enjoying his cottage at Pine Lake. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by cousins, Jean Anderson of Plainwell, Richard Brown of Green Valley, AZ, Richard Breese of Kalamazoo, and Barbara Benedict and Suzanne Hutchinson, both of Portage; and special friends, Russell Predum and Diane Hungerford and family, all of Kalamazoo. Peter was born July 20, 1926 in Grand Rapids, MI, the son of Peter and Lina (Ruoss) Kremers. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II. Peter graduated from the University of Michigan with an Engineering Degree and later was employed as a Project Manager at the Miller Davis Company for 42 years. He was a life member of the Kalamazoo Elks Lodge B.P.O.E. #50. On February 2, 1952, he was married to the former Jane Tunner, who survives. Also surviving are three children, Steven (Deborah) Kremers and Barbara (Thomas) Gallagher, all of Virginia Beach, VA and Walter (Hilal) Kremers of Rochester, MN; four grandchildren. A memorial service will be held Saturday at 1 PM at St. Luke's Episcopal Church, 247 W. Lovell St. with Mother Beth McLaren, officiating. Orton was born in 1958 and was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. He was preceded in death by his sister, Alicia Wendell; and step-father, Allen Easey. Orton will be missed by his three children, Shaun Engle, Jason Engle, Jessica Davenport; his mother, Charlene Easey; and father, Paule Engle; his fiance, Teressa Foster; and his sisters, Denice Thompson and Becky Keeler. Orton worked for Dixon Lawn Care and First Baptist Church of Kalamazoo. He loved sports and hunting. He was chairman of the Steering Committee at the Alano Club and he was a volunteer coach for the Special Olympics. Orton was a great man and father and will be missed by all who knew him. In accordance with Orton's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Orton's life will be held February 15, 2008 at 11:00 AM from the First Baptist Church, 315 W. Bruce was born in Belvidere, IL on September 21, 1921, one of two sons to Paul and Rose Churchill. Bruce met his wife, Virginia Vandeburg, in high school and planned to marry her after serving in Europe in World War II. On his return, Bruce and Virginia were married and moved to Madison, WI where Bruce earned a PhD in plant pharmacology. With their first child, they moved to Kalamazoo when Bruce was hired by the Upjohn Company as a microbiologist in 1949. He did research for the Company for 37 years. After his retirement, Bruce continued to work as a consultant with Traders Protein. Bruce was a member of Haven Reformed Church where he had been an elder and a kindergarten teacher, and was the organizer of Haven's monthly luncheons for seniors. For over 30 years, Bruce served as the President of the School Board - first at Gull Road Elementary and then at Comstock Public Schools. He was a PTA President, c! ub scout leader, coached his son's baseball team, was active in the Oshtemo Grange and the Elks Club of Kalamazoo. Bruce and Virginia cared for numerous foster babies after raising their own children. They fell in love with, and adopted, Polly. Bruce loved to take pictures, dance, grow roses, go fishing, play cards, and laugh. Even after suffering several heart attacks and finding he had Parkinson's and could no longer walk, Bruce continued to stay involved in the lives of his family who survive him: his wife of 62 years, Virginia; his son, Bruce L. (Cindy) Churchill; his daughters: Connie (Blake) Hagman, Carolyn (Tom ) Fehsenfeld, and Polly Churchill; eight grandchildren, Jennifer (Mark) Copland, Alan (Debbie) Fehsenfeld, Rebecca Ouding, Ben Fehsenfeld, Dana Fehsenfeld, Cristina, Tessa, and Leah Churchill; two great-grandchildren, Evan and Parker Frye; and one niece, Roberta Churchill. Bruce was proceeded in death by his parents, his brother, Bob, sister-in-law, Marjorie, ! and nephew Robert Churchill. Services will be held 11:00 Friday mornin g at Haven Reformed Church, 5350 N. 25th St., with the Rev. Roy Ackerman officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. "Millie" Meade Age 80 Of Sunbury, OH Passed away Friday, February 1, 2008 at Riverside Hospital in Columbus. Born January 7, 1926 in Kalamazoo, to the late Eppe and Sinne (Schraeder) Niewoonder. Valedictorian of her 1945 Kalamazoo Christian High School class, she moved to Delaware County, Ohio, from Boston in 1966. She had been an assistant for the library of Olentangy Local Schools for 15 years and moved to Sunbury in 1998. A sports fanatic, she loved attending any type of sporting event, especially those involving her children and grandchildren. She was actively involved with the Olentangy Athletic Boosters and Delaware County Aid to Retarded Citizens and was a member of Hope Lutheran Church in Condit. She was a devoted Christian, with boundless energy and love, dedicated to her family. Preceded in death by her husband of 51 years, Russell N. Meade, in 2002; brother, William Niewoonder; sisters, Joyce Niewoonder and Winnie French. Commodore was born March 24, 1925, to Commodore and Mary Ella (Gardner) Carr, who preceded him in death. Commodore went to school in the Kalamazoo Public School System before joining the United States Navy. Upon his return from service, he met his future wife, Mary Jewel Kelly. They were joined in marriage on September 24, 1948. Born from this union, one son, Robert L. Carr. Commodore retired from the Burroughs Corporation in 1990, after many years of service. During his retirement, he was able to enjoy most of his favorite hobbies, which included watching all sports, working in his yard and most of all his bowling. He had won numerous trophies over the years through the TNBA and Senior League. Besides his parents, he is preceded in death by two brothers, Mumb Lee and Willie James; one sister, Virgie Lee Palm and nephew, Gerald Mills. He leaves to cherish his memory, his loving and faithful wife of 59 years, Mary Jewel Carr; son, Robert;! grandson, Hajmil (Keyla) Carr of Chevy Chase, Maryland; granddaughter, Madiyaat Carr of Honolulu, Hawaii; one aunt, Tillie Givhans of Beloit, Wisconsin; two brother-in-laws, Otha (Lona) and Robert (Irene) Kelly; sister-in-law, Anita Turner, all of Kalamazoo; two great-grandchildren; a host of very special nieces and nephews, cousins, friends and special longtime friend, Willie Curtis, Jr. Services will be held 1:00 PM Thursday with a 12 noon family hour at Mt. Zion Baptist Church, Pastor Addis Moore, officiating. Friends may view 3-6 PM Wednesday, at the Harper Funeral Home, 521 Douglas Avenue, 342-1000. Interment Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. "Lou" Of Kalamazoo, MI Passed away on February 3, 2008 in Kalamazoo. Lucille was born in 1932 and was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. She was preceded in death by her husband of 25 years, James Bradshaw; her parents, Ken and Hazel Butler; her brother, Jim Butler; and numerous friends. Lucille was born in Kalamazoo in 1932 and graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1951. In 1952, she was joined in marriage to Fred Teutsch. She will be missed by her four children, Ruth Nowak, Bill, Ken and Eric Teutsch, all of Kalamazoo; and nine grandchildren who will fondly remember "pajama and movie days" with their grandma Lou. She is also survived by her brother, Bruce of Elk Rapids, MI and her brother, Dick of Kalamazoo. Lou was also extremely proud of her "five beautiful great-grandchildren." With seemingly unlimited energy, Lucille had a number of jobs in her life and "retired" in her mid-60's. She loved reading, crossword puzzles, and spending time with family and friends. Her lifelong best frie! nd, Marilyn Martin, also preceded her in death. Special thanks to the staff of Tendercare of Westwood, where Lucille spent her last months. Age 59 Of Richland, MI Died Monday, February 4, 2008 at Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Ann Arbor. He was born October 3, 1948 in Plainwell, the son of Charles A. and Betty J. (Wearmouth) Slack. He grew up at Sherman Lake, Augusta and graduated from Gull Lake High School in 1966. He was a Vietnam veteran and was awarded a Purple Heart for injuries received in combat. On December 13, 1969, Randy C. Slack became united in marriage to Susan L. Maguffee, in Lawton, OK. In addition to his wife, Susan, Randy is survived by his daughter, Kerri Slack; sons, Shane and Cody Slack, grandson Austin; granddaughter, Skyler Slack, all of Richland; his mother, Betty Slack of Augusta; sisters, Wendy (Dave) Orbeck of Delton, Lori (Mike) Hite of Climax, Kim (Keith) Blaisdell of Comstock and many nieces, nephews, aunts, uncles and close friends. Randy loved the outdoors, boats and old cars. He was recently building a " '38 " Ford pickup from spare parts, an accomplishment he was proud of. He worked at Stryker as a! machinist, until his retirement in 1998 due to health. At the request of the family a memorial service will be held 1:00 PM Friday, February 8, 2008 at the Yorkville Community Church with Rev. Shan Martin, officiating. Interment of cremains will be at Ft. Custer National Cemetery at a later date. Friends who wish may make memorial contributions to the church, Disabled American Veterans or to the Slack family. Constance was very creative. She loved to bake, sew, paint with water and chalk. She was a God fearing Bible believing Baptist. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother and great grandmother. She would help anyone in need and was liked by everyone. Constance is survived by her husband, William Henry Shingledecker to whom she married on December 23, 1955; three children, CindyJo Black, Brenda Lee (Ron) Olson and Scott J. Alice was born on May 12, 1914 in Syracuse, NY, the daughter of Andrew and Anna (Krawjeck) Bodnar. Alice was a member of St. Monica Catholic Church. Often she would pray the Novena's for those in need. When Alice was 72 years old, after a life long search, she located her sister from whom she was separated due to adoption. She married George Albert Plamondon, who preceded her in death on November 17, 1984. She is also preceded in death by her son, Francis Plamondon. Alice is survived by three children, Larry (Patricia) Plamondon of Delton, Pauline Plamondon (Jason Bierlein) of South Carolina and Arlene (Jack) Huver of Richland; two grandchildren, David and Anna Huver; a sister, JoAnne Greenslade, a niece, Mary Herman and two nephews, Paul and Charles Greenslade and a daughter-in-law, Denise Plamondon. She was a graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and was a Kalamazoo area resident most of her life. She was employed with Retail Store Employee Union, retiring in 1977. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and worked on the Alter Guild. She married John W. Essar on May 7, 1976. They loved to play golf, bowl and square dance. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, John W. Essar on November 19, 2005; and a step-son, Daniel Essar. She is survived by a brother, Robert Byers; a sister, Carole Ann Hoag; a nephew, Steve Hoag; two great-nephews, Justin and Jeff Hoag; several other nieces and nephews; in-laws, Ken and Evelyn Essar and Bob and Betty Essar; and special friend, Cheri Armstrong.
