She was enrolled in the RN program at Kellogg Community College and is remembered for her exuberant personality which attracted people from all walks of life. Dana's nursing professor states that she instilled energy into the RN program, bringing compassion, vitality, and encouragement to her fellow students. Dana lived her too short lifetime to its fullest. Among many other adventures, she once traveled with her father to Africa as a missionary. She is survived by her parents, her sisters, Rachel, Rebecca, and Abigail Sowers, and her brothers, Benjamin and Anthony Sowers. She is also survived by her grandparents, Dr. and Mrs. Henry Klos of St. Joseph, MI and by numerous extended family members. Cremation has taken place. A memorial service will be held on Sunday February 24 at 4:00 PM at the Paw Paw Seventh-day Adventist church. She was a member of Trinity Ev. Lutheran Church and AARP. A Kalamazoo resident since 1937, she was employed by the Upjohn Co. as a medical secretary for 33 years, retiring in 1983. She enjoyed swimming, golf and spending her winters in Florida. Surviving are cousins and friends. Services will be held 2 o'clock Monday afternoon at Trinity Lutheran Church, 504 S. Westnedge, with Pastor Ken Johnson officiating. Joan was born September 27, 1929 in Kalamazoo to Robert and Winifred Beveridge. She graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1947, along with her future husband, Robert Duncan, whom she would marry on September 16, 1950. Members of her family include her children, Susan Vanderberg of Denver, CO, Lorie (Bill) Reed of Kalamazoo, Jeffrey (Sheri) Duncan of Vicksburg and David Duncan of Norwalk, CT; her grandchildren are Erin and Stefany Vanderberg, Kelly Reed (John) Graham and Andrew (Sarah) Reed, Sawyer and Carver Duncan, Cole, Emma and Jacob Duncan. Great grandchildren are Alana and Riley Reed; her sisters are Janet (James) Poulston of Sarasota, FL, Connie (Joseph) Policky of Fox Lake, IL and Barbara Cline of Mattawan. Joan owned Stretch & Sew Fabrics for a number of years and was co-owner of Kalamazoo Catering and Vending, Inc. She was a member of the Portage Garden Club, who honored her with a lifetime membership to t! he Michigan Garden Clubs, Inc. for her meritorious service to the club. She was a member of the Portage United Church of Christ, the Kalamazoo Institute of Arts, the KIA Art League and was a charter member of the Moors Golf Club. She served the Glowing Embers Girl Scout Council as a Board Member and Vice President and was awarded their highest honor, the Thanks Badge. Joan was a kind and loving woman who enjoyed swimming with her "Y" friends three times a week. She loved her beautiful gardens and passed along her love of gardening to all four of her children. She loved to travel, especially overseas, having enjoyed visiting England, Ireland and Scotland, Europe and especially China. She was loved, admired and absolutely adored by her high school sweetheart and husband of 57 years, her children and grandchildren. She maintained lifelong friendships, still lunching with her high school girlfriends and her former Stretch & Sew employees. Joan was active with Ministry With Comm! unity and delivered for Meals On Wheels. We've lost our warm and devot ed wife, mother and friend. May the beauty, strength and grace she bestowed on us follow her always. She is already greatly missed. We love you Mom. Of Kalamazoo Henry went home to be with his Lord on Thursday morning, February 21, 2008. He was born August 1, 1925 in Kalamazoo, the son of John and Elizabeth (Koning) Sopjes and has been a lifelong resident. During WW II, from 1944-46, he served in the U.S. Army Air Corps. For over 20 years, he was a self-employed carpenter and then for 19 years he was employed with Bronson Hospital, retiring as maintenance construction supervisor. He was a longtime member of the Grace Christian Reformed Church, where he had served on the council. Henry enjoyed golfing and spending time with his family. On December 10, 1946, he was united in marriage to the former Theresa Post, who survives. Also surviving are a daughter and son, Joan (Jack) Bosscher of Grandville and James (Diane) Sopjes of Portage; grandchildren, Michael (Krista) Bosscher, Steven (Lynn) Bosscher, Beth, Mark and Scott Sopjes; great-grandchildren, Jacob, Sophia and Ella Bosscher; brothers, Tony Sopjes and Don (Carol) Sopjes; sisters-i! n-law, Adrie Sopjes, Henrietta, Ann and Gertrude Post, Jean Stoneburner and Daisy DeKruyter and many nieces and nephews. She attended the Alamo Community Congregational Church for 80 years. As a child, she would walk by herself three miles to church and back. This would make her late for Sunday lunch at home. She met her future husband, Lester Boyd Miller, whose house she walked by on the way to church. Mildred taught Sunday School for many years and was the church financial secretary for 30 years. She enjoyed her cat, growing raspberries and flowers, taking her tractor to the woods, fishing, making quilts, rugs and potholders, gathering and cracking walnuts. Mildred loved playing with her grandchildren, reading to them and listening to Lawrence Welk. She enjoyed the Christian messages of Billy Graham and George Beverly Shea. Surviving are a daughter, Violet (Ken) Mahieu of Schoolcraft; a son, Verlen "Moose" (Judy) Miller of Alamo;! 11 grandchildren; 29 great- grandchildren; 15 great-great- grandchildren; three sisters and two brothers, Florence Lappin, Lucille Hewitt, Elmer Black, Garland Black and Vera Kershaw; many nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband, Lester Boyd Miller, in 1950, her son, Boyd Miller, in 2001 and her brother, Martin Black.
