SULLIVAN - Portage, MI, died Thursday morning, November 13, 1997. Fannie was born January 3, 1913 in Shaw, GA, a daughter of James and Bonnie (BRYANT) TIPTON. She had been a Kalamazoo area resident most of her life, moving here from Chattanooga, TN, in 1936. Fannie was a member of the First Baptist Church of Portage for over 33 years, where she taught Sunday School and led the Ruth Class. She was employed for 10 years with Bowers Manufacturing. On April 11, 1931, she was united in marriage to Mr. Leslie R. SULLIVAN, who preceded her in death on August 28, 1984. Fannie is survived by her 2 daughters, Betty (Bruce) STONEROCK of Barstow, CA, Dorothy (Thomas) PRICHARD of Portage; 6 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren; a sister, Zelman DEANES of Chattanooga, TN; and several nieces and nephews. Services will be held Monday at 11:00 o'clock at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes Portage Chapel 411 E. Centre Ave. with Mr. Bruce Stonerock officiating. Private int! erment in Mt. She was preceded in death by her parents, sister, Donna PERRY and brothers, Ron, Tommy, Lee and Vernon BURMEISTER. On February 18, 1949, she was united in marriage to Gale F. SUMMERVILLE, who survives. Also surviving are two children and their spouses, Rhonda & Gary KRUEGER of Paw Paw and Doug & Deb SUMMERVILLE of Fulton; one granddaughter, Joani PRESTON; four grandsons, Ben & A.J. SUMMERVILLE and Ryan & Richard KRUEGER; great-granddaughter, Katherine Elaine PRESTON; four sisters, Betty KONOSKI of Flint, Ruth FRITZLER of Texas, Beverly BETKE of Plainwell and Pat MASIWCHU! Lorraine attended Battle Creek Public Schools, graduating from Battle Creek Central in June of 1934. After uniting in marriage to R. J. SUTTON, she moved to Kalamazoo, MI. She was a member of Second Baptist Church. In July, 1994, Lorraine moved to Lansing where she lived with her daughter and loving caregiver, Sharon POWELL, until her death. She was preceded in death by her parents, John and Leona SHERROD; her husband R. J.; daughters, Sarita L. COLLINS, Lynette and Jeanette; son Kevin; and a brother John SHERROD. Surviving: are her husband, J. Robert SHORT; children, Landis (Mollie) MCFINTON of Kalamazoo, Sue SHOUP of Kalamazoo, Sharon (Tom) HODGSON of Chelsea, MI; 8 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild. Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held December 9, 1997 at 11 a.m. at Mt. Ever-Rest Mausoleim, Kal. SHORT Jr., Kalamazoo, MI, Died Tuesday morning, December 2, 1997 following a short illness. Mr. SHORT was born January 28, 1908 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a son of Robert and Lillian (MILHAM) SHORT, Sr. During WW II, he served with the U.S. Army as a Lieutenant Colonel, and later retired after 34 years of service. He had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident, and was employed at Joseph P. Loughead Company for 43 years, retiring in 1981. He was preceded in death by his wife, Mae SHORT in 1989. He is survived by 3 cousins, Elsie TURNER, Eleanor REYNOLDS, and Phyllis (Tony) LORENTZ, all of Kalamazoo. In accordance with his wishes cremation has taken place. There will be no visitation. Private interment of cremains at a later date. Memorials may be directed to the Michigan Kidney Foundation. Arrangements were made by the Langeland Family Funeral Homes Memorial Chapel, 622 S. TORREY - Age 87 Of Galesburg, Formerly of Augusta and Battle Creek, Died Tuesday, November 19, 1996 at her residence after a long illness. She was born in Charleston Township, south of Augusta, on October 24, 1909, the daughter of Charles W. and Mable Edna (WAITE) TOWNE (her mother was known by her middle name, Edna). She grew up in Charleston Township, and attended the old Lawler School, and then moved to the Battle Creek area and attended Springfield High School. She then graduated from Argubright Business College (now Davenport College). She lived in Battle Creek for several years, in the Augusta area for 29 years, moving to East Leroy in 1976, and then to Galesburg in 1994. Helen began working for the Federal Government August 2, 1942. Helen began working for the Federal Government August 2, 1942 at Percy Jones General Hospital. Her federal service included employment with the Headquarters of Civil Defense, Sixth Army Corps, the Navy, Ft. Custer Post Headq! uarters, and the Defense Logistics Services Center, before retiring June 30, 1973 after 31 years. She was a life member and former three term Auxiliary President of Battle Creek Veterans of Foreign Wars Chapter #565, life member of the Disabled American Veterans Auxiliary Battle Creek Chapter #7, life member and volunteer at the Eaton Rapids VFW National Home, member of the National Association of Retired Federal Employees Local #123, and the American Federation of Government Employees Local #1626, the AARP, and spent hundreds of hours volunteering at the Battle Creek Veterans Affairs Medical Center. She enjoyed cooking, canning, baking, having friends and family for dinners, and after retirement she and her husband enjoyed traveling and wintering in Mission, TX. She was married to George A. TORREY March 2, 1946 at Elkhart, IN, and he survives. She was preceded in death as a child by her mother and later by her father and stepmother, Cora TOWNE. Friends may call after 6! p.m. this evening at the Farley-Estes & Dowdle Funeral Home, 105 Capi tal Ave. NE, Battle Creek where her family will be present to receive friends 6:30-8:00 p.m. this evening and Thursday. He was born June 29, 1947, in Kalamazoo, MI. He served 14 years in the U.S. Army as a pilot and served during the Vietnam War. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal, the Good Conduct Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Purple Heart with 1 Oak Leaf Cluster, Bronze Star, Civil Defense Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, 6 overseas Service Medals, the Army Commendation Medal with 1st Oak Leaf Cluster, Air Medal 1-40, and a Presidential Unit Citation for his service in the 101st Airborn(e) in Vietnam. He was a member of the Aransas County Sheriff's Reserves, the Vietnam Pilot Association, and the "Black-Cats" and the "Cowboys", tow organizations of former Vietnam pilots. He was employed by Air Logistics for over 14 yea! rs and was an Aransas County Sheriff Reserve Office for 3 years. He was preceded in death by his father, Thomas TRAVIS in 1994. TEADT - 1460 E. Crooked Lake Drive, Kalamazoo, Earl's life began on November 22, 1924 in Colon, MI. He served honorably in the US Marine Corps during World War II. He was a former co-owner of E. & R Earthmoving in Kalamazoo and was a Master Plumber with a Mechanical Boiler Technician license. Earl was a member of the Marine Corps League of Kalamazoo and the 3rd Marine Division in California. He loved fishing and hunting and had made three fishing trips to Alaska and a moose-hunting trip to Canada. Earl built his home in Texas Township in 1947 and lived there ever since. He enjoyed his work and loved his friends and family. Earl was united in marriage on December 5, 1942 in Scotts, MI to Wilda May (CHAMPION) TEADT and they were blessed with 2 daughters, Gertrude MARVIN of Kalamazoo and Shirley STEVENS and her husband Henry of Mattawan; 3 sisters and 1 brother, Edna COVILLE of Coldwater, Evelyn BURCHARD of Illinois, Ellaann WEST of Texas, and Carl and Ruth TEADT! of Willston; 4 grandchildren, Gregory MARVIN and his wife, Charlotte, Darrin MARVIN, Trena MARTIN-ROWE and her husband Duane ROWE, and Henry STEVENS Jr.; 5 great-grandchildren, Samuel, Amy Rose and Layla MARVIN, and Caitlin and Chelsea ROWE; 8 sisters-in-law and brothers-in-law, Mildred BROWN, Clayton and Alberta CHAMPION, Willabelle COMPTON, Martha WELCH, Nancy and David SADDLER, Sharon and Charles SMITH, Mark and Roslyn CHAMPION, and Sandra and Harry WISE; and many nieces and nephews. Earl passed away Thursday, January 17, 1997 in Kalamazoo. He graduated from Western Michigan University with a Bachelor and Master's Degrees in Education. Chuck taught school in Custer, MI, and then in Kalamazoo at Hillside Junior High, where he had been a football coach, and at Kalamazoo Central High, retiring in 1985. He served in the US Air Force in Fairbanks, AK, during the Korean Conflict. Chuck was an avid sportsman who enjoyed fishing and golfing, was as skilled craftsman, and he also loved cooking and gardening. His family includes his mother, Lavina TAYLOR of Allegan; 4 children and spouses, Deb and Jim WIDMAN and Jody and Doug SCHOETZOW, all of Portage. Michael and Stacy TAYLOR of Shelby, and Tim and Inger TAYLOR of Mattawan; a brother and wife, Ivan "Bud" and Fran TAYLOR of Allegan; a sister and husband, Arla and Burl SIMPSON of Hopkins; 7 grandchildren, Jason and Br! yan WIDMAN, Katherine and Kimberly SCHOETZOW , and T. TELFER - Richland, MI, died Friday morning, April 19, 1996. Norma was born November 27, 1926 in Plainwell the daughter of Russell and Edna (ENGLES) HAZEL. She was a member of the Gull Lake Area Community Church and of the Richland Chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star. Music was a big part of her life. Back in the 1940s, along with her father and a few other local musicians, they were remembered for many square dances in the rural areas of Kalamazoo and Barry County. Norma loved her music and was a piano instructor for many years in the Richland area during the 1960s and 1970s. She continued her music in the 1980s and for a time, was the Kalamazoo County Organist for the Eastern Star and for her Richland Chapter until her illness. She also was past pianist and organist for the Gull Lake Community Church. Surviving are a daughter and a son, Diane E. ENOS, David J. TELFER, both of Richland; a sister, Laurel E. HAZEL of Richland; and special friends, Ma! rvin and Bobbie Double. Services will be held 11 o'clock, Monday at the Gull Lake Area Community Church (9292 East CD Ave.) with Rev. Mr. James D. Hill officiating. Interment in Richland Prairie Home Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Visiting Nurses Assoc. Hospice Program.
