Jack was born March 19, 1921 to Sidney and Bertine (Pattison) Fisher in Kalamazoo. Some longtime Kalamazoo residents will remember Jack as one of the stars on the 1937-39 football teams, at the old State High School. He was the center and a defensive player on a team whose linemen averaged 200 pounds - a very big team for those days and was undefeated for the two seasons. He received his pilot license in 1942 and enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps. He received a medical discharge in 1943. He traveled to Rochester, MN and enrolled in the glider training school at which time he met Katherine Elliott at a Mayo Clinic Social Club dance. He was united in marriage to Katherine on October 20, 1945. They were married for 55 years until her passing on August 25, 2000. Jack and Kay owned and operated Zig's Little Statler, which was later renamed Fisher's! Restaurant at 459 N. Rose St, from 1945 to 1965. That was in the days when more than 20 trains a day stopped at the Kalamazoo Train Depot, many passengers would cross the street for a fast meal. In 1964, Jack received his real estate license and joined the Bob Simon Realty Company. In 1969, he was employed by the City of Kalamazoo as an assistant real estate officer in the purchasing department. He became the City's Real Estate Officer in 1978, a position he held until his retirement in 1983. After retiring, he and Kay traveled all over the United States in their motor home. Jack was actively involved in the Milwood Little League; and loved fishing, golfing, bowling, baseball, and football - he loved all sports. Jack was also a lifetime member of the B.P.O. Elk Lodge # 50; and a volunteer fireman. Surviving are his son, John Fisher and his wife Lee Ann of Orchard Lake; his daughter, Susan Gudme and her husband David of Kalamazoo; a granddaughter, Sally Fisher of Orchard La! ke; his brother-in-law, Charles Elliott and his wife Marlys of Rochest er, MN, and their children; a second cousin, Briggs MacGreggor, and his daughter Ellie. He will also be missed by his friend and companion, Jean Koopsen and all of his friends he had coffee with almost every morning. 1. [MIKALAMA] Andrew J. Gibson obit 12/18/1867 Kalamazoo includes Hawes and Wagner names
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Author: mbieliauskas Surnames: Gibson Hawes Wagner Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.kalamazoo/22366/mb.ashx Message Board Post: I am not related, but was doing research on the Gibson name and looked this up. I had found some other articles that mention that this Mr. Gibson founded a Reading Room in Kalamazoo and then later sold his business to a William Shakespeare. He is listed in the 1860 Kalamazoo census. Any of his relatives names remain a mystery. The obit is in very tiny print and my hard copy is somewhat blurred. Died Dansville NY Dec 1867 Mr Gibson was born at Morris NY and the early years of his life was spent at this place. His parents being unable to give him such an education as he desired, young Gibson determined to provide for himself in this respect, and in 1848-9 and '50, he is perseveringly pursuing his studies at the Delaware Institute of Franklin NY, paying for his way by his own industry. In 1850, he went to the office of j. (Josiah) L. Hawes, Esq., in Coblesville to study law, for which he manifested a strong liking-and remained in that office until Mr. Hawes removed to Kalamazoo in 1851. Mr. Gibson then went to Somerville NJ, and taught school there one winter. He then came to Kalamazoo, and again studied law; but fearing his health would be inadequate to the labor consequent upon a professional life he abandoned the idea of becoming a lawyer, formed a co-partnership with j. (Jacob) K. Wagner, with whom he carried on the book trade for several years. Mr. Gibson then continued the business b! y himself, until about 2 months before his death. The last few years of his life were years of great physical suffering. He resorted to every means that were suggested and that he could obtain to regain his health-but to no purpose. His last hope of relief was the Dansville Water Cure establishment, whither he went a few weeks since. His last moments were were soothed and made blessed by the presence, care and devotion of one who, in her love and fidelity, repeats the noblest lessons of earthly affection. There is more on this obit about his fine library and love of books and it ends by saying his remains were taken to be buried in Utica NY, where he had relatives.
