Maxine was born September 8, 1922 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, a daughter of John and Irene (Percell) Castor. She had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and was employed with Gilmore's Department Store for six years, before retiring. She was also a member of the Michigan Odd Fellows and Social Rebekah Lodge for 55 years serving as Past President and Noble Grand Matron; Comstock Senior Center for 17 years and served on the board for 10 years. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Victor C. Campbell, Sr. on February 19, 1990; and a sister, Florence Brink. She is survived by three children, MaryAnn (Woody) Byers of Vicksburg, Dolores Linstead of Parchment, and Victor (Carol) Campbell of Portage; six grandchildren, Steve Byers, Chris (Julie) Byers, Lori (Todd) Totzke, Jim Linstead, Melissa Dykehouse, and Mark (Jen) Campbell; nine great-grandchildren; two nieces; several cousins; h! er constant companion, Dorey; her cat; her many friends at Parchment Harding's, especially Dan and Jodi; her neighbor, Ron and her Doctor and Nurse, Dr. Williams and Kimberly. She was born in Andover, Massachusetts in 1923, to Alvin James Bailey and Helen Bodwell Bailey. She attended Boston University, graduated Phi Beta Kappa, taught high school for two years in Ashland, MA, and went to the University of Wisconsin for a master's degree. She taught English at West High School in Madison and during one summer worked with the American Friends Service Committee in Mexico. In 1950, she met Conrad Hilberry at a dance at the Green Lantern Coop and they married in April 1951. A daughter, Katharine, was born in 1952 and a second, Marilyn, two years later. In 1954, the Hilberry's moved to Greencastle, IN, where Marion and Conrad both taught English at DePauw University. A third daughter, Jane, was born there. In 1962, they moved to Kalamazoo, where their fourth daughter, Ann, was born. For more than 40! years, Marion taught English to foreign students at Nazareth College, Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo College, and often tutored individuals, sometimes forming lasting friendships. For a number of years she taught a literature course, mostly novels, at Friendship Village. The Hilberrys both taught for a term at a university in Quito, Equador. On leave, they spent four months on the island of Crete and many months in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico. Marion is survived by Conrad, Marilyn, Jane and Ann; by three grandsons, Ben, Jim and Adam and by her sister, Helen Kinsman and her family. The memorial service will be held at Stetson Chapel, Kalamazoo College on May 17, 2008 at 11:00 AM. He was born June 3, 1934 in Kalamazoo, MI, the son of Richard and Marguerite DeVries, residing there his whole life. Bob graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School, was a life-long member of Second Christian Reformed Church, had served on Consistory, served on the Kalamazoo Christian Booster Club and served as treasurer secretary for the Kalamazoo Men's Bowling Association for numerous years. He had also been inducted as a member of the Kalamazoo Association Bowling Hall of Fame in 1987. He was a Kalamazoo Gazette motor route carrier for the last 18 years, until his death. He loved watching his grandkids participate in their sporting events. He was united in marriage to Jean (Elgersma) DeVries on September 3, 1954, who preceded him in death on May 18, 2006. He is survived by his daughters and their husbands, Pam and Jeff Everts of Schoolcraft, Patti and Steve Groetsema of Augusta, Robin a! nd Dan Kalleward of Vicksburg; six grandchildren, Scott, Chris, Chad, Shaun, Danielle and Kylie; one brother, Jack (Nancy) DeVries and three sisters, Betty (Tom) Meeth, Barb McBarnes and Carole (Pete) Cucuirean. Age 89 Of Kalamazoo, Michigan Died Wednesday, April 9, 2008 at his home. Mr. Cronkhite was born April 8, 1919 in Kalamazoo, the son of Arthur and Libbie (Roberts) Cronkhite. Lloyd loved his family and enjoyed horses, nature and the country life. He was very active and a member of community and was on the Alamo Fire Department for many years. Lloyd was an artificial inseminator of cows for the Michigan Animal Breeders Association. Lloyd was a dairy farmer his entire life, he also showed horses and loved working with them. On December 12, 1945, in Plainwell, he married Marcia Confer, who survives. Also surviving are his son and daughter-in-law, Bernard and Gail Cronkhite; a granddaughter, Michelle Colyer; a great-grandson, Matthew Colyer; several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents. He was born December 30, 1920 in Chicago, Illinois, the son of Anthony and Valerya (Tomczyk) Suterko. Stan graduated from the University of Illinois with a BS in Education and earned a Masters Degree from WMU. He served as a LTJG in the U.S. Navy during WWII on a sub-chaser in the Pacific Region. On November 25, 1948, he was wed to his beloved wife, Wanda (Barabas), who survives. He began his career at Hines V.A. Hospital, Hines, IL, where he helped establish the first Orientation and Mobility program for blinded veterans. He came to WMU in 1961 to aid in the establishment of the Blind Rehabilitation Department. He had a distinguished teaching career as he taught in England, Poland, Australia, France and many places in the United States. He received the highest honors of his profession culminating with his induction into The Hall of Fame for Leaders and Legends of the Blindness F! ield in 2002. Stan was often referred to as "St. Peter of Mobility". He retired from WMU in 1984 as Professor Emeritus. Stan was a Charter Member of St. Catherine of Siena Church. Also surviving him are his three daughters and son-in-laws, Sandra (Gordon) Plourde, Williamston, MI, Diane (Richard) Konwinski, Portage, MI, Catherine (Robert) Sigler, Saline, MI; seven grandchildren, Justin and Scott Plourde, Nicole (Chad) Elliott, Ryan and Kyle Konwinski, Lauren and John Sigler; one great granddaughter: Cassady Plourde; brother-in-laws, Jack Susarrey and Chester (Marion) Barabas; sister-in-laws, Ann Walsh and Lorraine Pasowicz; many nieces, nephews and special friends. He was preceded in death by his brother, Anthony. She was born August 28, 1922 in Kalamazoo, Michigan, to Claude and Cecil Stephenson. She grew up in Vicksburg with her younger sister, LaVon. After graduating from Vicksburg High School in 1940, she worked at Gilmore's department store for 1 1/2 years. Lorene married Gerald R. Smith on November 16, 1941. The couple owned and operated Smith Radio and Television for 36 years and the Smith Income Tax Service for 30 years. Lorene was an avid golfer, bowler, bridge player and loved to travel. The couple traveled extensively in the U.S. and abroad. Gerald passed away June 6, 2007. Lorene is survived by her sister, LaVon Dorrance and two sons, Ronald of Vicksburg and Stephen of Chicago; five grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren. A lifelong resident of Kalamazoo, he was born November 12, 1924 in Kalamazoo, the son of the late Nelson and Dora (Smith) Kinney. A 1942 graduate of State High School, Marvin was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II from 1942-1946. Following his time in the Army, Marvin attended Rochester Institute of Technology for two years from 1947-1949, graduating with a degree in Printing Technology. Marvin owned and operated Tri-County Fence Co. for 14 years, until his retirement in the mid 1990's. He was an avid golfer and member of Pine View Golf Club. On August 14, 1947, he was united in marriage to Irene (Burrma) in Kalamazoo, who survives. Also surviving are two children, Jill Kinney of Portland, OR, and Scott (Robin) Kinney of Phoenix, AZ; two grandchildren, Melissa and Adam Kinney; one sister, Marilyn Carr of Paw Paw; and several nieces and nephews. Of Portage Jordan, age 19, passed away unexpectedly in his sleep at his home on Wednesday, April 9, 2008 from a pre-existing heart condition. He was born August 4, 1988 in Kalamazoo, the son of Jeffrey and Mary (Longjohn) Jackson. Jordan was 2007 graduate of Portage Central High School and was currently attending Kalamazoo Valley Community College studying history and religion. He planned to travel and play with his "Band Family", Jason and Matt Curtis and Dominic Armstrong. Surviving are his parents, Jeff and Mary Jackson; two sisters, Jena Jackson and Mandi (fiancé Billy Parker) Jackson; one niece, Arabella; grandparents, Jeannine Longjohn of Portage, and Donnalee and Wilburn "Poppa" Jackson of Morris Chapel, TN; many aunts, uncles, cousins and dear friends whom he loved. Preceding him in death were his grandfather, Gabriel Longjohn and one uncle, Mark Longjohn. Jordan was a loving and caring son and brother. He was a true and loyal friend. Jordan was a talented musician and songwr! iter. He will never be forgotten. Funeral services for Jordan will be at 11 AM on Tuesday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Avenue. Friends may visit from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Monday at the funeral home. As an expression of sympathy, memorial contributions may be directed to the family. Mr. John Strange Harrison, age 85, passed away on Tuesday, April 8, 2008 of heart failure. Born on September 20, 1922 in Kalamazoo, MI, he moved to Winter Haven in 1985. John was a member of the VFW in Kalamazoo, MI and of the American Legion in Winter Haven. He was an Army veteran, serving in WWII. John was preceded in death by his parents, Ernest and Ethel Harrison; daughter, Cathy J. Taylor; sisters, Carmelita, Lillian and Esther; and brothers, Max and Roy. He is survived by his wife of 62 years, Barbara L. He had been a Kalamazoo area resident most of his life and was employed with K.V.P. Sutherland Company for 40 years, retiring in 1984. He was a member of the Kalamazoo Masonic Lodge. Following his retirement, he loved traveling, bowling and dancing with his wife, Eleanor. He was preceded in death by his parents; his first wife, Marie Brigance on October 31, 1984; and several brothers. In October of 1999, he was united in marriage to Eleanor M. (Taylor) Brigance, who survives. Katheryn was born April 13, 1944 in Battle Creek, MI, the daughter of Homer and Virginia (Whitney) Tindall and was a resident of Galesburg for most of her life. She was employed at Designware (Beach Products) from 1979 until her retirement in 2004. Surviving is her long time friend and caretaker, Karen VanMeekeren of Galesburg. Katheryn was preceded in death by her best friend, her dog Rusty. She loved nature and animals and is survived by her current pet, Sandy. Katheryn also enjoyed reading, needlepoint, bird watching and especially going on the bus trips with her friends from Weatherstone Village. A memorial service will be held at 1:00 o'clock Tuesday, April 15th in the Clubhouse at Weatherstone Village, 5225 N. 25th St. with Pastor John Sparks, officiating.
