The day marked the end of a nearly thirty-year struggle with health afflictions that was punctuated by the cancer that ultimately took his life. Wayne's time in this world will not be measured by the breadth of his accomplishments or by the vastness of his wealth, but rather by the depths of his spirituality, his dedication to family and integrity towards his fellow man. Wayne was born in Bedum, Netherlands in 1938. He immigrated with his family to America when he was eight years old and they settled and began a new life in Kalamazoo, where he lived ever since. In 1967, he married Ruth DeDoes, to whom he remained faithfully devoted for over forty years until his passing. Wayne is survived by his four children, Kimberly (Jason) Wolfe of Lake Ann, MI, Todd of Vicksburg, MI, Lorilei (Bruce) Spletzer of Belmont, MI, and Jason (Tamara) of Grand Rapids, MI. He als! o had the privilege of two grandchildren, Nathan and Owen. Wayne was the fifth child in a family of eight. He was preceded in death by his mother and father, Albert and Anna Batts; and his two brothers, Bert and John. Mourning his loss are his four remaining brothers, Len (Jean), Otto (Ruth), Tony (Flossie), Clarence (Linda); and his one sister Margrete (Joe) Balkema. He worked for Balkema Excavating and Allied Mechanical Services until major health complications forced him to take early retirement in 1979. Whereas some men are remembered for their work, Wayne will be remembered for the passion of his faith and his commitment to living a Godly life. He was a Deacon, a member of the Men of Song and a Youth Group Leader, but more importantly, a Christian who never abandoned his convictions regardless of what problems he faced in life. Wayne coped with many trials, some by chance and some by his own hand, but we can all take comfort in knowing that by his passing, he has been ! eased of his burdens. A Memorial Service will be held for Wayne at Tex as Corners Bible Church on Tuesday, May 27 at 11AM. A visitation with friends and family will be held at 10AM with a luncheon to follow the service. All who knew him are encouraged to attend and share in a time of prayer and remembrance. Wayne found great joy in working at and supporting the mission of Camp Barakel in Fairview, MI. Memorial Contributions may be made in his name to Camp Barakel (arranged through family) or to Hospice of Heartland. Collectively, we may have lost a Husband, a Father, a Grandfather, a Brother, an Uncle and a Friend, but by following his examples we can all gain a valuable lesson. For it is through God's Grace that Wayne now spends peaceful eternity in Heaven, and through that same Grace alone may we have the chance to see him again. He died on May 15, 2008 in Grand Rapids, Michigan. He was preceeded in death by his brother Richard, who was not only a brother but a dear and life-long friend. He leaves behind his beloved wife of 62 years, Ellie, who was his faithful companion and trusted soulmate. He also leaves four loving daughters and their husbands and companions, Susan (Gregg Bryant), Cindy (Jeff Klum), Sarah (Jim Liddy) and Nancy (Dave Anderson), and six grandchildren, Matthew, Andy, Tim, Rob, Adrienne and Scott. Bill left Parker for his undergraduate education at the University of Michigan, then entered medical school at the University of Pennsylvania. After receiving his medical degree in 1943, he served in the United States Army as a flight surgeon. He returned to Ann Arbor for his pediatric training and was Chief Resident at the Universi! ty of Michigan Medical Center during the years 1950-52. After practicing general pediatrics in Kalamazoo, Michigan for 20 years, he and Ellie and their two youngest daughters moved to Madison, Wisconsin, where Bill completed a fellowship in neonatology and was among the first group of physicians board certified in neonatology. He started the neonatal unit at Bronson Hospital, Kalamazoo, Michigan, which he named the Special Care Nursery, a title that reflected what he felt about his young patients and their families--that they were beloved and truly special. In 1978, Bill and Ellie moved to Wilmington, North Carolina where Bill started his second neonatal unit and continued to provide care for the smallest and most vulnerable infants. The last ten years of his professional career, Bill focused on another of his professional interests, developmental pediatrics. His Wilmington-based practice was dedicated to the care of children with attention deficit disorder and other neurob! ehavioral challenges. Ellie, a speech pathologist, joined him professi onally during this phase of his career, providing speech, behavioral and school consultation services to complement the medical care provided by Bill. Bill was an avid outdoorsman. He loved fall partridge hunting in the northern Michigan woods, fishing, sailing, camping and downhill skiing. However, his life-long passion was golf. He was a member of the University of Michigan Golf Team during his undergraduate years, and followed that elusive white ball around many, many courses. He shot an 87 last summer, respectable for an 85-year-old, and that is no fish story! Bill lived a life of service. He gave nothing but the best medical care to his young patients. He served God in many ways, as a Stephen Ministry leader, Sunday School teacher and member of Kiwanis. He lived to make the world a better place, and his values and appreciations will live on in those who knew him. He will be deeply missed. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that memorial contributions made to Starr Comm! onwealth, 13725 Starr Commonwealth Road, Albion, Michigan, 49224. To leave a fond memory of Bill, please go online to www.mem.com. In keeping with Bill's wishes, cremation has taken place. A celebration of Bill's life will be held at a later date this summer.
