Stan was born August 11, 1918 in Plainwell, the son of Fred O. and Bessie H. (Ives) Rumble and had lived in the Kalamazoo area for over 60 years. He was a member of the First Congregational Church UCC and had been employed by Durametallic (now Flowserve) as a design engineer for 37 years. Stan graduated from Western Michigan University, was a member of the Gull Lake Rotary Club, Kalamazoo Anchor Lodge # 87, where he served as Master in 1956, Masonic Retirees, 32nd Degree Scottish Rite, Saladin Shrine, American Legion Post #36 and Past President of the Kalamazoo Engineering Society. During WW II, from 1941 to 1945, he served his country in the United States Marine Corps. On June 17, 1944, he married Marion R. Wheeler, who survives. Also surviving are their children, Roger A. (Linda) Rumble of Otsego and Nancy A. (Lowell) Knapp of Battle Creek; grandchildren, Susan (Brian) Binning, Jim Knapp, Bob (Laura) Knapp, Karin Knapp and Steve (Jennifer)! Knapp; great- grandchildren, Hudson Knapp, Boston Knapp, Oakley Knapp, Zachary Binning and Ella Binning. Memorial services will be conducted at 1 PM Monday in the First Congregational Church UCC, 129 S. Park St. with Rev. Matthew Laney, officiating. The former Jan McDaniel was born June 23, 1944 in Cadillac and grew up and attended schools in Manton. She married Garvin Jensen in 1962 and had been a Kalamazoo area resident many years. She was a graduate of KVCC and worked as a nurse in several area nursing homes, retiring four years ago. She loved living on a lake and spending time with her family and grandchildren. Surviving are her husband, Garvin; children, Krista Campbell of Kalamazoo, Gary (Julie) Jensen of Scott, Patrick (Annie) Jensen of Kalamazoo; her mother, Keitha Belle McDaniel of Manton; a brother, Dallas (Beverly) McDaniel and a sister, Mary Moore, both of Manton; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild. She was preceded in death by her father and a grandson, Brian Campbell. Funeral services will be held at 1 PM Thursday at the Hall Funeral Chapel in Manton with burial following in Greenwood Twp. She was the only child of Ralph and Amy (Franszine) Spaulding and grew up in the Chicago-Hammond area. She was close to her Swedish maternal grandparents and to her mother's sister and husband, especially after her mother died when she was 12. She did office work in the Chicago area after graduation from Hammond High School in 1939, where she had been active in the newspaper and in forensics competitions. With her two sons from her first marriage, Betty moved to Kalamazoo in 1949, working at a variety of office positions. Betty was employed at Western Michigan University for more than 20 years, retiring from Media Services in 1985. Taking classes while working full time and raising a family, Betty earned a bachelor's degree from WMU in ! 1971. The WMU Commission on the Status of Women recognized her as "Woman of the Year" in 1981. Betty had been an enthusiastic writer even before she became feature editor of the Hammond High School newspaper in 1938, and continued to write throughout her life, publishing in several magazines. Writing was a major occupation during her retirement. The weekly meetings of the Portage Senior Center Reminiscence Writing Group supported this commitment. She is preceded in death by her parents; two sons, Terry Kohler (Vietnam, 1972) and Peter Kohler (1998); two infant children; her daughter-in-law, Cindy L. Fouch (2000); her first husband, Peter Kohler and her second husband, John Fouch (1983). She is survived by a son, David Fouch of Otsego; a daughter, Jamie Fouch of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren and one great-grandchild. Cremation has occurred. Memorial contributions may be directed to Rose Arbor Hospice Program. She was born December 30, 1901 in Galesburg and was the daughter of the late Frederick and Bessie Bishop Barber. A teacher, she received a BA in Education from Western Michigan University and an MA from the University of Michigan. She taught for 30 years in the Kalamazoo Public Schools, retiring in 1964. Marion was a life member of the following professional organizations: MEA, NEA and the Kalamazoo Retired School Personnel. She held local as well as state offices and always worked toward improving the status of the teaching profession. She was married for 53 years to her beloved husband, Francis Edward Leach, who predeceased her in 1977. During their years together they enjoyed many hobbies, especially traveling throughout the USA and all over the world. They made 16mm movies and 35mm slides of their travels which they shared with friends and various organizations in! the Kalamazoo area and in Aiken, where she had resided for the past 15 years. In their later years, they traveled in their motor home on rock hunting expeditions. Francis cut and polished stones and made beautiful stone jewelry that Marion proudly wore until her passing. Marion was predeceased by her two daughters, Francis Anne and Nancy Jane and her three sisters, Margaret Kirby, Marjorie Fox and Bernice Force. She will be greatly missed by her son, Phillip (Kay) of Aiken; four grandchildren, David, (Debbie) Port Angeles, WA, Kim Fanter, St. Louis MO, Wendy Leach, Fairbanks, AK, Cody Leach, Aiken; three great-granddaughters, Casey & Kelly Fanter and Chloe Leach. MARVIN Jean Marvin had a zest for life and that zest had an influence on many people in the Kalamazoo area. Her lifetime achievements were many but the one most remembered and cherished was her involvement with the Vine Neighborhood Association. Jean passed away February 19, 2008 in Tucson, AZ. So that we can all share favorite memories of Jean, a remembrance reception will be held Saturday June 7th from 1-4 PM at O'Duffy's Pub, 804 W. Vine St. (corner of Locust and below Cosmo's Cucina, her favorite eating establishment). Jean was preceded in death by her husband, Frank Theodore (Ted) Marvin; parents, Walter and Leota Graham and her brother, Tom Graham. After living 30 years in West Virginia, she lived in several locations including Kalamazoo. While in Kalamazoo, she was employed in sales by KVP Sutherland and Goodyear Tire Co. While employed at KVP, she married Harlan Longnecker, who preceded her in death. After her marriage to him they retired to McAllen, TX. Dorothy's favorite interests were gardening, cooking, animals and fishing. She was a member of the W. Texas Hospital Volunteer Auxiliary and Curves. Dorothy is survived by a son, Joseph (Karren) Ford of West Virginia; a daughter, Ann (Steven) Ball of Portage, MI; a step- daughter, Francie Longnecker of Ann Arbor, MI; four grandchildren, Stephanie (Mike) McKulsky, JC (Christina) Ford, Robert (Michelle) Ball and Todd Ford; eight great- grandchildren; a brother, Harold Leach; one niece, Zoann (Randy) Koc! hersperger; one nephew, David (Sue) Leach; one cousin, Elsie Cross and her special friend, Richard Wheeler. She was there reunited with her beloved daughter, Sharon Beaty Roberson and other loved ones gone on before her, a sister and three brothers. Lorena passed away at Borgess Nursing Home where she had been a resident since March of 2006 due to injuries from a fall. Lorena's earthy life began February 7, 1924 in eastern Tennessee, not far from the awesome Smoky Mountains. She grew up in Morgan County, raised by parents, the late Elijah and Matilda Ward. She came to Kalamazoo where her hometown sweetheart Woodrow Beaty had moved when he found employment in a local paper company. They were married in Kalamazoo and from this marriage two daughters and one son were born. Woodrow preceded her in death in 1990. Prior to her retirement she was employed at Borgess Medical Center for approximately 25 years. Lorena is survi! ved by her daughter and son-in-law, Barbara and Raleigh Thomas; her son, Dale Beaty; two grand-daughters, Toni Roberson-Macigewski and Kasonya Beaty; three grandsons, Tom Roberson and Kenneth and Nathan Beaty; 11 great- grandchildren; a son-in-law, Tom Roberson; four sisters and two brothers and several nieces and nephews. Lorena truly believed the Bible was the inspired Word of God and in the Saving Grace of Jesus Christ. Years ago she had become a member of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Comstock, MI and regularly attended services there until due to health reasons she gave up driving and transportation to the church became a problem. She then "attended" church through Christian Television. She loved gospel music and especially enjoyed Bill and Gloria Gaither and all their homecoming friends. A Visitation will be held on Tuesday, June 3, 2008 from 11:30 AM until 12:30 PM at PARCHMENT-REDMOND Funeral Home 2300 East G Ave - 349-7735 Graveside Services will immediately follow at 1:00 PM by Reverend Ray Steigenga at West Cooper Cemetery on Douglas Avenue. Humphrey was born July 28, 1928 in New York City to father, Richard P. Windisch and mother, Margaret Humphrey Windisch, who were also long time residents of Naples. He was a 1946 graduate of Deerfield Academy in Deerfield, Massachusetts and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Kalamazoo College in 1951. Humphrey enrolled in the Air National Guard during his college years and was called to active duty during the Korean War to serve in the U.S. Air Force from which he received an honorable discharge in 1953. Humphrey is survived by brothers, John M. Windisch of Naples, FL and Charles C. Windisch and wife, Louise of Cambria, CA, together with a niece, Gillian Parrott and nephews, Dr. Thomas Windisch and Conrad Windisch. Richard Humphrey Windisch will be sadly missed by his family and friends and forever remembered for his kindness and patriotism. His funeral service will be arrange! d by the family and burial is scheduled to take place at the family burial site at Spring Grove Cemetery and Arboretum, 4521 Spring Grove Ave., Cincinnati, OH. She was born March 3, 1935 in Kalamazoo, where she lived for 70 years before moving to Grand Rapids to be near her children and grandchildren. Esther graduated from Kalamazoo Christian High School in 1952 and was a longtime former member of Netherlands Reformed Congregation in Kalamazoo and a current member of Heritage Netherlands Reformed Church in Grand Rapids. Esther enjoyed volunteering at nursing homes and most of all spending time with her grandchildren. Her testimony and life showed her fervent hope in the Lord Jesus Christ and her desire to be with Him. Surviving Esther is her husband of 52 years of marriage, Jacob; three daughters, Kathy (Mark) Scholten of Akron, OH, Elizabeth (Kevin) DeVries of Allendale, MI, and Joan (Roger) Vroegindewey of Ada, MI; 15 grandchildren, Sarah, Rachel, Jason, Bethany, and Mathew Scholten, Nathan, Abigail, Jonathan, Caleb, and Maria DeVries, ! and Luke, Isaac, Jeremiah, Noah, Grace, and Phillip Vroegindewey; three brothers, Barney and Peter Sluys both of Kalamazoo, and John Sluys of Phoenix, AZ; one sister, Alice VanDyken of Manhattan, MT; two brothers-in-law, Garrett (Helen) VanGiessen, Bart (Anne) VanGiessen, and one sister-in-law, Mary (Robert) VanBeck; two step-brothers-in-law, Albert and James Sikkema; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death was their only son, James Allen VanGiessen; two grandchildren, Amanda and Lauren Vroegindewey; her parents, John and Irene (Westra) Sluys; and two sisters, Martha Huttinga and Winifred Broekema. Funeral services for Esther will be at 2:00 PM on Tuesday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street, with Rev. Dr. Joel Beeke officiating. Interment will follow in Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park with Rev. Mark Scholten officiating. Friends may visit with the family from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM on Monday and from 1-2 PM on Tuesday at the funeral ! home. In her 90 plus years, Bette touched countless lives - from her kindness, thoughtfulness and compassion, to her strength and determination, she was truly a force of nature. Never hesitating to offer her shoulder for someone to cry on, or an ear to listen, Bette lived a life that was of service to her family, her friends, and her community. She is preceded in death by her parents, Forest and Nettie (Hale) Johnson, her beloved husband Donald, and her sons, David and Phillip. Bette is survived by her son, Dennis, and her daughter, Judy, nine grandchildren, fourteen great-grandchildren, and three great-great-grandchildren. Florence was a lifelong resident of Richland and Kalamazoo. She retired from the First Federal Credit Union and served on the Credit Union Board of Directors for many years. She was an active member of the Parchment community, and was especially committed ! to the Parchment Library. Friends and family are invited for visitation on Thursday, June 5th, from 10:00 - 11:00 AM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick Street, which will be followed immediately by a memorial service at 11:15 AM in the Chapel at Mt. Ever-Rest Memorial Park. She was born September 2, 1928 in Berrien County, to Milton J. and Myrtle J. Litowich. She graduated from Baldwin High School in 1946 and remained in Baldwin several years. Charles and Janet and their four children moved to Kalamazoo in 1957. She worked as a volunteer many years with the Glowing Embers Girl Scouts Council, Kalamazoo Association for Retarded Children, Parkview-Upjohn School swimming program, Greenwood and Milwood Schools as room mother. In Bangor, MI, she was chairperson for 10 years of the Apple Festival Parade and President of the Van Buren Association for Retarded Children. After moving to Coloma, MI, she became chairperson of the Glad-Peach Festival Parade for two years. She also volunteered six years at the Watervliet Community Hospital for the Ladies Auxiliary in the radiology department and Life Line. After retiring, they moved back to Kalamazoo in 1996. At that time she started doing volunteer work for MRC ! Industries on Bank St. and in 2002 was presented with the Kalamazoo Senior Star Award for volunteerism. Her other interests in Kalamazoo have been the Kalamazoo Kings ball team, of which she has been an avid fan and supporter. A member of Gnosis II Club, Kalamazoo Chapter. Janet was preceded in death by her father, Milton J. Litowich; her mother, Myrtle J. Gould; her sister, Dorothy R. Newman; her youngest child, Laura Fletcher and her step-father, C. Frederick Gould. She is survived by her husband, Charles F. Fletcher; sons, John (Connie) Fletcher of Brownsburg, IN and Michael Fletcher, Richard Fletcher and Kathleen Marks, all of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren, Virginia, Laura, Nicole and Andrew; a great-grandchild, Emily; three step- sisters, Mary (Larry) Latowski of Battle Creek, Nancy (Ron) Bush of Athens, TX and Susan (Dave) Heater of Hartford, MI; and several nieces, nephews and cousins. Private services will be held at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chap! el, 3926 South 9th St. Private burial will take place in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery at a later date.
