She was born May 9, 1977 in Kalamazoo. She was the daughter of Ruth Ann and William W. Phillips of Kalamazoo. Missy graduated from Loy Norrix High School in 1995 and from Western Michigan University in December of 2007, where she earned a Bachelor's degree in Elementary Education. She made the Dean's list several times and was currently studying for her master's degree. Missy was employed as a Lead Teacher at Curious Kids in Portage. Missy was an avid bowler and bowled several 300 games. She belonged to the Kalamazoo Area Women's Bowling Association (KAWBA) and bowled in several leagues, and she recently won the 2008 Singles Actual Event in the KAWBA City Tournament. She was proud to be a member of "Team Drink Up", who recently achieved the women's all-time city high series. Missy loved her friends and family, especially her nieces and nephew, as well as the children of some of her best friends. Besides her pa! rents, she is survived by a brother, Fred (Kathy) Phillips; niece Katlyn; sister, Linda (Jeff) Marcon; nephew, Parker and niece Hannah Marcon, all of Paw Paw. Her nieces and her nephew dearly loved "Aunt Mimi" and she will be sorely missed. Visitation with the family will be held on Friday June 27, from 6 to 8 PM at Langeland Family Westside Chapel, 3926 S. Ninth St. in Kalamazoo and a Memorial Service will be held on Saturday, June 28, at 1 PM at the chapel. In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to the "Missy Phillips Memorial Scholarship Fund" supporting youth bowlers, in care of Continental Lanes in Kalamazoo. He was born September 9, 1966 in Kalamazoo, the son of Dale and Patricia (Baker) Ford. Dale was employed by Kalamazoo Public Library as the Bookmobile driver for their Oshtemo Branch for many years. He loved music, and professional wrestling and attending concerts and wrestling events; but most of all he enjoyed spending time with his family and friends. Surviving are his parents, Dale and Patricia Ford; his sister and brother, Michelle Dolph and Darren Ford, both of Kalamazoo; two nephews; and several aunts, uncles and cousins. Of Kalamazoo Velma died peacefully on Monday, June 23, 2008 in Kalamazoo, MI. She was born November 14, 1922 in Dighton, MI, one of eight children to Oliver and Minnie DePew. Velma was the former owner of Velma's Beauty Shoppe in Parchment and then was employed by Checker Motors, retiring after 17 years of service. On June 29, 1941, Velma was united in marriage with Vernon M. Dunn, who preceded her in death on April 27, 2001, after 59 years of marriage. She was also preceded in death by an infant daughter, Gena Rae and five siblings, Ethel, Florence, Grace, Clifford and Wilber. Surviving are two sons, David Dunn of Tustin and Michael (Marian) Dunn of Gobles; two brothers, Raymond DePew of Marion and Calvin DePew of Tustin; and many nieces and nephews. George was born on November 14, 1923 in Kalamazoo, MI and was the son of Harry and Ruth (Sprague) Telfer. He was a lifetime area resident and had resided in Richland since 1948. George was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and served his country aboard the USS New Jersey in the South Pacific Theater. He retired in 1984 as a Supervisor for Burrough's after 14 years of faithful service. George was a Founding Member of the Gull Lake Area Community Church of Richland; he was a 50-year member and Past Master of the F & AM-Richland Lodge and was a volunteer for the Richland Township Fire Department. He was an avid gardener, enjoyed hunting, reading and traveling with his wife, Pearl and he never passed-up a round of golf. On March 8, 1947 in Kalamazoo, he was united in marriage to the former, Pearl M. Webber, who preceded him in death on April 9, 2002. Surviving are two daughters, Marcia L. Royer of Alma, MI and Roxann! e S. (James) Newton of Parchment, MI; his two sons, George H. (Elizabeth) Telfer of Troy, MI and Jerry R. Telfer of Richland, MI; ten grandchildren; and by three great-great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Lynn J. Telfer on November 20, 1991; his son-in-law, I. Mark Royer; by his sister, Helen Phaneuf and his brother: Robert S. Telfer. He was born April 30, 1929 in Kalamazoo, the son of Harold A. and Mary (Vanden Berg) Howe. He served four years in the United States Air Force, during the Korean Conflict from 1948 to 1952. Robert was a high school administrator and teacher for many years and in many locations, Mendon, Marcellus, Leslie and finally Chippewa Hills, retiring in 1990. On February 13, 1954 he married Joann Newton, who survives. Robert and Joann spent many mornings at Theo & Stacy's Restaurant on Portage Road and enjoyed Bingo. He will be missed by many. Robert is also survived by his children, Daniel (Evelyn) Howe of Evart, MI, Julie (Bill) McKinney of Clermont, FL, Robert Paul Howe II (Kara) of Big Rapids and Patti (Jeff) McNeilly of Sears, MI; 12 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; a brother, Holroyd Howe of Portage; three sisters, Harriet Smith of Parchment, Olive (Ted) LaCoss of Paw Paw ! and Virginia H. She was secretary and treasurer of the Kalamazoo Round Table Club, and a Director on its National Board. She was also a member of the Kalamazoo and Michigan Associations of Retired School Personnel. She was preceded in death by a sister, Luanna TRINE in 1996. On June 22, 1958, she was married to James P. ROBINSON, who survives. Also surviving are a nephew, Gary M. Of Kalamazoo, MI Lawrence went home to be with the Lord Wednesday evening June 25, 2008. He was born July 11, 1924 in Kalamazoo, Michigan a son of Lawrence and Retha (VanOcker) Schroeder. He was a 1942 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School. During WWII, he served with the U.S. Army Air Corps. He had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and was employed with the Upjohn Company for 32 years, retiring in 1982. He was also a member of Zion Lutheran Church. He was preceded in death by his parents. On November 26, 1948, he was united in marriage to Helen J. Johnson who survives. Also surviving, two daughters, Judith Meskil Willbrandt of Williamsburg, VA and Carleen (Ray) VanderBok of Saline, MI; a son, Randy (Beth) Schroeder of Kalamazoo; seven grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren. Private services and burial will be held in Fort Custer National Cemetery. There will be no visitation. Memorials may be directed to the Zion Lutheran Church Building Fund. "Jerry" (Kozar) Age 75 Of Jenison Formerly of Kalamazoo Was called to her heavenly home on Thursday, June 26, 2008, after a courageous battle with cancer. She was preceded in death by her parents, George and Gladys Kozar. Jerry was a strong woman of faith and character. Her perseverance in every situation in life was evident to all who knew her. She also had the gift of hospitality and cooking; always having plenty of food for all who gathered at her home. She will be lovingly remembered by her husband, Russell Povenz; her children, Russell Jr. and Mary Povenz of Wyoming, Cathleen and John Mulder of Hudsonville, Kevin and Kari Povenz of Jenison, Joseph Povenz of Zeeland, Steven and Michele Povenz of Hudsonville; 13 grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; sisters, Marilyn Kozar, Shirley and John Heuser; several nieces and nephews. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday 11:00 AM at Holy Redeemer Church, 2700 Baldwin St., Jenison, MI with Fr. Ronald Hutchinson, celebrant. Interment Mt. Everest Cemetery, Kalamazoo, MI. Elizabeth was born January 30, 1918, in Kalamazoo, Michigan. She attended St. Joseph's Catholic School and St. Augustine High School, where she graduated with honors in 1936. She attended Western Michigan Teachers' College in Kalamazoo, and began her career teaching primary school in Brooklyn, Michigan. Elizabeth married Walter Paynick of Paw Paw, in 1942. The couple moved to Detroit, where Elizabeth worked for thirty years in the Detroit Public School System. After retirement, Betty and Walt divided their time between Michigan and Florida. Elizabeth was preceded in death by Walter (1987), and is survived by her daughters Patricia, of Wauwatosa, Wisconsin, and Janice, of St. Paul, Minnesota, and by three grandchildren, and five great-grandchildren. Went to be with his Lord June 25, 2008 after a lengthy battle with cancer. He was born January 29, 1935, to John and Etrole (Jackie) Marcon in Kalamazoo. He graduated in 1953 from St. Augustine High School in Kalamazoo, where he was an outstanding athlete. Victor served his country honorably in the United States Army, stationed in both the U.S. and Germany. He retired from LSI/Kala now Schawk, in 1999. He was preceded in death by his parents. He is survived by his loving wife, Sharon and they would have been married 50 years this October. Also surviving are three sons, Steve (Rene) of Kalamazoo, Jeff (Linda) of Paw Paw and Doug (Juanita) of Parchment. Other survivors include grandchildren, Michael, Jessica, Parker and Hannah; sisters, Carol (Larry) Tiller of Richland and Rosemary (Tim) Shay of Allegan; nephews, Dr. Eric Shay of Kalamazoo and Todd Shay of Tennessee. She was born February 28, 1917 in Kalamazoo, a daughter of Seger and Christina (Scholten) De Haan and was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. Effie was a member of Comstock Christian Reformed Church, where she was a member of the Dorcas Society, the Gleaners and had served as a church organist. Effie was the first "TV Lady" (Hospix Television Rentals) at Borgess Hospital. She was a hard worker in the family owned business of raising celery and working in the greenhouse and bedding plants until she was 85 years old. She began selling flowers from her home in Comstock and continued in retail sales at the Wenke Greenhouse, where she loved waiting on the customers. On January 10, 1935, she married Thomas F. Boven, who preceded her in death on October 14, 1979. She was also preceded in death by her parents; a son, Larry Boven on May 16, 2008; three sisters, Angeline Fletcher, Grace Kloosterman and Mary Chenery; two brothers! , Jim De Haan and Jacob De Haan. Effie is survived by her daughters, Nancy (Lorence) Wenke of Kalamazoo, Mary Beth (Richard) Triesenberg of Kalamazoo; her daughter-in-law, Barbara Boven of Kalamazoo; eight grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; a sister-in-law, Rena De Haan of Kalamazoo; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Funeral services will be conducted on Monday at 11:00 AM in the Comstock Christian Reformed Church, 5300 Comstock Ave. with Rev. Jay Pruim officiating. Interment will follow in Comstock Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. on Sunday from 4-8 PM.
