RICHMOND - Kalamazoo, MI, died Sunday, October 12, 1997. Mr. RICHMOND was born November 20th, 1911 in Aberdeen, OH. He was the son of Oscar and Elizabeth (GRIERSON) RICHMOND. Upon graduation from Aberdeen High School he joined the J. C. Penney Company in Maysville, KY, rising to Assistant Manager. IN 1939, he was transferred to the Chillicothe, OH store, and in 1943 to Battle Creek, MI, again as Assistant Manager, July 1st, 1948 he became Manager of the Greenville, MI store and continued as Manager at the Midland, MI and Kalamazoo stores in 1949 and 1963 respectively. Mr. RICHMOND retired in February 1973. He was a member of the Kiwanis Club, Kalamazoo County Club, and Elks Lodge #50. He served as President of the Downtown Kalamazoo Association in 1974; and was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Kalamazoo. Mr. RICHMOND was preceded in death by Nancy (OWENS) RICHMOND, mother of James W. RICHMOND (spouse Lois) of Kalamazoo; and Helen (KOCH) RICHMOND, mother of John E. RICHMOND (spouse Marcia) of St. Johns, MI. He is survived by his wife, Irene (CLIFFORD) RICHMOND; and her son Jack (spouse Margot) CLIFFORD. Mr. RICHMOND is also survived by granddaughter, Emile A. RICHMOND-RANZO (spouse Dean); and great-granddaughters, Elizabeth and Suzannah, and grandson, Andrew J. RICHMOND of Kalamazoo (children/grandchildren of James), and grandson, Matthew G. RICHMOND of DeWitt, MI (son of James), and grandson, Matthew G. RICHMOND of DeWitt, MI (son of John). Services for Mr. RICHMOND will be held at Langeland Family Funeral Homes Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., on Tuesday, October 14, at 1:00 p.m., Rev. Mr. Keith Treman officiating. Visitation is scheduled for Monday from 6-8 p.m. and on Tuesday one hour prior to service time. Interment will be made in Mt. Ever-Rest Cemetery. On June 27, 1970, she was united in marriage to Dennis RICE who survives. Also surviving are 2 sons, Brian and Jean RICE of Kalamazoo, Dennis RICE Jr., of Cooper; grandson, Brandon RICE of Kalamazoo; her parents; 3 half-sisters, Lisa SPEARS of Kalamazoo, Heather and Holly WETMORE, both of Columbus, OH; many aunts, uncles, nieces and nephews. Friends may call beginning Thursday at the Betzler Funeral Home, Stadium Dr., W. of 131 Serving People of All Faiths where services will be held Saturday 10:00 a.m., Pastor Garry O'Dell, Word of Truth 4 Square Church, officiating. RAY - Kalamazoo, MI, passed away early Thursday morning September 18, 1997. Mrs. RAY was born November 29, 1922 in Kalamazoo, a daughter of Irving and Arvilla (LETOURNEAU) GARRETT. She had been a life-long resident of this community. Mrs. RAY was employed with the Michigan Bell Telephone Company for several years before turning her full attention to raising her family. Mrs. RAY was [a] member of the First Congregational Church of Kalamazoo and a member of the Mary Kate Guild. She was an avid seamstress and enjoyed playing bridge, golf and traveling. On May 13, 1943, she was united in marriage to Theodore (Ted) RAY, who survives. Also surviving are three children, a daughter, Cheryl (Tom) TEETAERT of Grosse Pointe Woods, a son Kent (Susan) RAY of Kalamazoo, and a daughter Jodi (Steve) ARMSTRONG of Grosses Pointe Woods; 7 grandchildren, Tracy, Todd and Torrey TEETAERT; Kristen and Kelsey RAY; and Tyler and Madison ARMSTRONG; her sister, Bernice BUNDAY; her step-mother, Pearl GARRETT; a step-sister, Josie (Harry) MANNELLA; a step-brother, Miles RAGAIN and several nieces and nephews. A memorial services will be held 12 o'clock Monday at the First Congregational Church of Kalamazoo, 129 S. Park St., with the Rev. Dr. Robert Noblett officiating. There will be no visitation. Private interment at Ft. Custer National Cemetery. He was a member of North Presbyterian Church, attended Croyden School 13 years, had a tremendous love of gospel and country music, and enjoyed his dog, Bubbles, who preceded him in death. Surviving besides his parents are his grandmother, and [her] husband, Gloria and Forrest SELL of Kalamazoo; two brothers and spouses, James and Angela ROE of Kalamazoo, Donald III and Mellissa ROE of South Haven, three nieces and three nephews, Ashley, Jacklyn, Halla, Michael, Dylan and Patrick; several aunts, uncles and cousins. She was born on July 24, 1915 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of the late Freeland L. and Blanch (WHITTEMYER) GALBREATH. The former Virginia GALBREATH married W. Cleland RUSELL on March 23, 1935 in Kalamazoo. He predeceased her on July 11, 1997. She had been employed in food service at various schools in the Kalamazoo area for several years. She was a member of the Wickwire Chapter #57 Order of the Eastern Star. She was Grand Electa in the Adair-Russell Grand Family from 1972-1973. She was later a member of Loyalty #497 of Kalamazoo. Mrs. RUSSELL is survived by three children, Kay and her husband, Larry HALE of Midland, David and his wife, Teri of Rochester, MN, and William of Waterford; by one sister Barbara SCHWARTZ of Kalamazoo; eight grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren. In accordance with Mrs. RUSSELL's wishes, cremation has taken place, and a memorial service will be held at a later date. He was a member of the Congregation of Moses, the Westside Kiwanis Club, and the A.R.R.P. His wife, Matilda, passed away in 1993. He is survived by two sons, Dr. Charles D. ROSS of Ft. Worth, TX, and Richard S. ROSS of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren; one great-grandson; and one sister, Min BORUCH of Florida. Born February 26, 1938 in Pontiac, MI, he received degrees from Davenport Business Institute and Aquinas College in Grand Rapids, MI. Associated with Davenport for 37 years, Dex served as an instructor, Dean and President of the Kalamazoo branch, formerly Parsons Business School, and Senior Vice President of Davenport Business School System. In June, he was honored with the 1997 Davenport College Distinguished Alumni Award. He was a member of Second Reformed Church of Kalamazoo Community, Dex had served on the boards of the Kalamazoo Symphony, Bronson Hospital Foundation, Kalamazoo Nature Center, Options for Community Living, Gull Lake Country Club, Kalamazoo Personnel Guidance Association, and Plaza Arts Circle. He was a trustee and past President of the Kalamazoo YMCA, past President of the Michigan Business Schools Association, and past Chairman of the Association of Independent Colleges and Schools Accrediting Commission. Dex was preceded in death by his father, C. Dexter ROHM Sr. Surviving are his wife of 37 years, Sandy; a daughter, Kim and son-in-law, Tom DAMMER of Pittsburgh, PA; a son, Bill and daughter-in-law, Amy of Chattanooga, TN; his mother, Grayce of Kalamazoo; a sister, Judy of Mason, MI; four grandchildren, Emily and Ross DAMMER and Anna and Ashley ROHM. Contributions may be made to the Dex ROHM Scholarship Fund - Davenport College, Kalamazoo Branch, Hospice of Greater Kalamazoo, West Michigan Cancer Center, or Second Reformed Church. Todd was born August 31, 1964 in Kalamazoo, the son of Sandra ROELLCHEN and Thomas ROEHLLCHEN. A 1982 graduate of Loy Norrix High School, he attended Albion College and Michigan State University, and MSU-College of Osteopathic Medicine. He graduated from medical school in 1994. He was in his third year of Family Practice residency in Tucson, Arizona. In addition to his pure joy and zest for living, he exhibited a deep sense of loyalty and devotion to his friends, family and patients. Todd leaves many supportive friends and family members. In addition to his parents, he is survived by one brother, Thomas J. "T. .J." ROEHLLCHEN; sisters, Lisa ROEHLLCHEN and Julia KOESTNER; two grandmothers, Cleo Patrick and Anne ELZEY; one great-grandmother, Magdalene ELZEY; two nephews, Elijah ROELLCHEN and Elzey ROEHCHEN-RITCHIE; and several loving aunts, uncles and cousins. He will be missed by all who knew him. A Memorial Service will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, August 14th, 1987 at S. Monica's Church, 534 West Kilgore, Kalamazoo. In accordance with his wishes cremation has already taken place. In lieu of flowers memorial contributions may be made to the Todd ROELLCHEN Fund made payable to the Kalamazoo Foundation, 332 Comerica Bldg., Kalamazoo MI 49007. The funds will be used to assist in furthering alchohol awareness and/or medical school training. She leaves to remember her, her loving husband, Leonard ROBINSON Sr; two sons, Calvin WILLIAMS and Leonard ROBINSON Jr; grandchildren, Terrell DAVIS, DeShawn ROBINSON, Gwendolyn (CANNOY) and Amber HOOKER. Hazel has six great-grandchildren. He was born July 22, 1906 in Richland Township, the son of Roy and Minnie (SONNEVILLE) REED. He founded the Parkview Inn in Richland in 1929. He owned and operated, with this wife, Marjorie, the Reed Nursing Homes in Richland and Kalamazoo from 1949-1969. He was also a school bus driver for Richland, and his father, Roy was the founder of the Reed Garage in Richland in the late 1920s. He was also a Richland volunteer fireman with his father, Roy. He belonged to the Kalamazoo Gun Club, and enjoyed trap shooting and skeet. He bird hunted in upper and lower Michigan, especially around the Kalkaska area, and hunted moose in Canada, and on one trip was particularly proud of killing 3 moose with 5 shots! He was a member of the Kalamazoo Moose Lodge and Kalamazoo Valley Outboard Club in the 50s and 60s. He was preceded in death by his wife, the former B! eulah CUNNINGHAM; and his parents. Surviving are 2 daughters, Betty Jane MONROE of Kalamazoo, and Bonny Lynn HARBACK of Jacksonville, FL, and Italy; 4 grandchildren; 8 great-grandchildren. There will be no visitation. REECE - age 56, Formerly of Vicksburg, died on August 30, 1997 in Philadelphia after a long illness. REECE was born in Vicksburg, MI, January 4, 1941, and raised on a farm near Fulton. Following graduation from high school REECE attended the University of Michigan, where he was granted both his Bachelor's and Masters degrees. His Ph.D was awarded at Stanford University. He also studied at Columbia University in New York, and McGill University in Montreal. REECE's doctoral degree studies were made possible as he was the recipient of a Woodrow Wilson Fellowship, a Stanford University Graduate Fellowship, and a Ford Foundation Fellowship given annually to the country's most promising graduate students. His entire career was spent at the University of Pennsylvania, where he was a professor of modern European history. He also was an adjunct professor at other institutions of higher learning in the Philadelphia area. REECE was a renowned lecturer, often presenting ! papers at National and International conventions of academicians and political leaders, both in the United Stated and Europe. He was honored as the Professor of the Year for the History Department at Penn in 1989. REECE is survived by his mother, Beulah REECE of Vicksburg. Also surviving him are four brothers and a sister, Ron (Diane) of Three Rivers, MI, Tom (Sandy) of New York, John (Lori) of Healdsburg, CA, David (Kathy) of Kalamazoo, and Janet REECE of Aptos, CA. He also leaves behind several nieces, nephews and grandnieces and a grandnephew, aunts, an uncle, and many cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, Paul in 1962. REECE was a caring person, keeping up on the activities of his family members and a multitude of friends. "A Celebration of Life" will be held at the grave site at the South Fulton Cemetery in Fulton, Michigan on Sunday, September 28, 1997 at 1 pm. Cremation has taken place consistent with his wishes. He has resided in Ocean Ridge, Florida, since his retirement from Alvan Motor Freight, Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 2001. Howard was a devoted husband and loving father. He enjoyed spending time on his boat, Seas the Day, watching baseball, playing cards with friends and family and walking the beach with his wife. He will be greatly missed by all who knew him.
