Florence was born August 3, 1922 in Kalamazoo and was the daughter of Joseph and Mary (Magee) Ritchie. She was united in marriage with the late Donald A. Falvey on December 23, 1941 and was a devoted wife and loving mother. She was a natural organizer and always available to help others. She was a dedicated volunteer with the American Cancer Society for over 25 years and was very active in her church. Throughout her life, Florence enjoyed many activities with her friends and will be dearly missed by all who knew her. Florence is survived by her sister, Helen Brevitz of Wayland, Michigan; four daughters, Charlene and Bob Trimper of London, England, Kathleen and Dick Crookston of Atlanta, GA, Sharon and Lars Svendsen of Kalamazoo, MI and Molly and Richard Macaulay of Vail, CO; 16 grandchildren; 13 great- grandchildren; nieces and nephews.Friends may spend time with the Falvey Family Wednesday evening from 6 to 8 p.m. and a Celebration of Life Service will be held Thursday at 11 AM at St. Martin of Tours Episcopal Church at 2010 Nichols Rd. A 1967 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School, Virginia was employed by Meijer Inc. for 15 years, until her retirement in 1987. Surviving her husband of 60 years, Clifford Akker; five children, Joyanne Jordan of Comstock, Susan (Michael) Nichols of Kalamazoo, Judith (Steven) Ross of Grand Rapids, Clifford Akker, Jr. of Detroit, and Teresa (Joe) Hynes of Paw Paw; daughter-in-law, Brenda Akker of NC; 11 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; two sisters, Carole Dickey of Florida and Ann Nusbaum of NV; one brother, Jan Cunnington of FL; two dear friends, Charlene Kesterson and Lilly Lamorandier; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death are her parents; one daughter, Sally Akker (as a child); three brothers, Daniel Cunnington, Jr., Arthur Cunnington and Aaron Ivens; and one sister, Edith Cunnington (as a child). Memorial services for Virginia will be at 12 PM on Thursday a the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Comstock Chapel, 6121 King Highway. Interment will follow in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. "Wallie" Of Portage Passed away on Friday, June 27, 2008 at Friendship Village Health Center in Kalamazoo, MI after a battle with cancer and Alzheimer's. Arlene was born July 20, 1933 in Menominee, MI to Waitio W. Waltonen and Bessie Holland Waltonen Schaperkotter. She received her BA and MA in Art Education at Michigan State University. For 34 years she taught art in the Kalamazoo Public Schools, Arlene started teaching elementary art at Wilson and South Westnedge, then at Parkwood-Upjohn and Oakwood Junior High and finally at Kalamazoo Central. She also served as the KPS Secondary Art Coordinator. After her retirement from KPS Arlene taught art education at Western Michigan University for four years. Arlene was a member of the NEA, MEA, NAEA and received the Michigan Art Education Association Secondary Supervisor award and a lifetime membership to the MAEA. She was an inspiration to both art students and art teachers alike. Arlene is survived by her sister, Marilyn (James) Waltonen Thunes, of Keshena, WI and her brother Wallie (Jewreen) Waltonen, of Ebro, FL as well as her four nieces, Kerry (Wayne) Binnington of Coloma, MI, Kativa Waltonen Conroy, Mindy Waltonen and Monty Waltonen of Ebro, FL; three nephews, Jerry (Joyce) Thunes of Milwaukee, WI, James Walter (Kathy) Thunes of Appleton, WI and Marty (Joann) Waltonen of Ebro, FL; eleven great-nieces and nephews and four grand-nieces and nephews. No visitation is planned. A memorial service will be held at 2:00 PM on Thursday, July 3, at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th St., Kalamazoo. Memorials in Arlene's memory may be made to your local arts programs or Heartland Hospice Services of Portage, MI. Drake Rd., died Tuesday evening, January 27, 1998. Margaret was born April 9, 1907 in Tak Hing, South China, the daughter of Rev. John and Maude (LAWSON) ROBB, Missionaries in China. She returned with her parents to the United States at an early age. She later graduated from Oberlin College with a teaching degree. Margaret taught Latin and English for over 30 years at St. Joseph High School in St. Joseph High School in St. Joseph, MI, and after her retirement, came to Kalamazoo and was one of the original residents of Friendship Village. She attended the First Presbyterian Church in Kalamazoo. Margaret was an avid outdoor person and enjoyed observing wildflowers, bird watching and was an expert knitter and seamstress. She was preceded in death by three brothers. Surviving are her close friend, Glenna Moore of Friendship Village; a sister-in-law and 2 nieces and 1 nephew. In accordance with her wishes, cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 Saturday, February 7th in the KIVA at Friendship Village with the Rev. Jean A. Norris officiating. interment of cremains will be in Mt.Ever-Rest Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Friends Fund at Friendship Village. Mrs. REED was born October 3, 1911 in Decatur, MI, the daughter of Sherman and Charlotte (GRAHAM) DEUEL. She was a graduate of the Borgess Hospital and Nazareth College School of Nursing and was a Registered Nurse. She also received psychiatric nursing training in Washington, DC. She was employed at Borgess Hospital, and in 1949, she and her former husband started the Reed Nursing Home in Richland. They later owned and operated Reed Nursing Home in Kalamazoo. From 1964 to 1974, she sold real estate in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She returned here and was employed at the Veterans Administration Hospital in Battle Creek until her retirement in 1982. She loved camping and traveling and in the 50's and 60's, was a member of the Kalamazoo Valley Outboard club. She was formerly married to Frank REED, who passed away September 10, 1997. She was also preceded in death by a sister, Katherine DEUEL. Surviving are two daughters, Bonny Lynn HARBACK and husband Ronald of Jacksonville, FL and Italy, and Betty Jane MONROE of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren, Mark HIZER, Salvatore DENOBILE, Christina GONIA and Ronald HARBACK Jr.; 8 great-grandchildren; one brother, Gilbert DEUEL and his wife, Emma of Lawton; and two nephews. There will be no visitation. A graveside service will be held Monday at 2:30 p.m. in the Lakeside Cemetery, Decatur, with Pastor Jeff Worden of the Hickory Corners Bible Church officiating. Known as the Bird Lady, Ella was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo, an avid Bingo player, fisherwoman, and donated much of her life to helping others, especially Jimmy's Wishes. She was employed at Western Michigan University for many years. On January 16, 1975 she was united in marriage to Paul E. RINEHART, her loving and caring husband of 22 years, who survives. Also surviving are seven children and their spouses, Todd and Sue LANGDON of Grand Rapids, Robert and Tena LANGDON and Robin and Phillip PIERCE of Parchment, Michelle and Scott YOUNG of Jones, MI, Gene RINEHART and Jessica of Kalamazoo, Shirley and Randy ZIMMERMAN of Hartford, MI; sixteen grandchildren; brothers and sisters, Harmon (Sonny) and Gete YANT, Bill and Lee YANT, Tim and Teva STEVENS, Verna STRICKLAND, Jim YANT, Terri and Gary GOULD; several nieces and nephews. Mrs. Peake was born on September 15, 1927 in Mars, PA. She graduated from Mars High School before pursuing further education at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital School of X-ray Technology. It was while working as an x-ray technician at University Hospital in Philadelphia that she met her future husband, Charles O. Peake, M.D. They were married in 1952 and in 1955 moved to Kalamazoo where they remained until they retired to Longboat Key, FL in 1999. While Chuck focused on building his medical practice, Kay began raising their family. Their first child, Patti was born in September, 1955. A son, John followed in March of 1958 and a second son, Chas in June of 1960. Kay was involved in the Kalamazoo Academy of Medicine Auxiliary, The American Society of Radiologic Technologists, the Order of the Eastern Star, the Kalamazoo Art Institute and various other charities and was well regarded for her keen eye in interior design. Kay was preceded in death by her parents, Francis and Goldie Mathiott and two sisters, Emiline Wiegand and Virginia Mertz. In November 1999, after 47 years of marriage, Chuck passed away at their home in Florida. A year later Kay moved back to Kalamazoo. Kay is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Patti and Art Hirsch of Boulder, CO, her son, John D. Peake of Tampa, FL and son and daughter-in-law, Chas and Julie Peake of Portage, MI. She is also survived by four grandsons, Kellen and Noah Hirsch of Boulder, CO and Jacob and Jackson Peake of Portage, and a nephew, Erik Peake of Hickory, NC. The family will receive friends at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St. on Tuesday from 5-8 PM. Also surviving are her sisters, Kimberly Weiss, Marcia (Scott) Poole; her niece and nephew, Lauren and Nolan Padley; nephews, Andrew and Justin Poole; maternal grandmother, Fern Berner all of Kalamazoo as well as aunts, uncles and several cousins. She also leaves behind her faithful companions, Finnegan, her cat, and her dog Hannah. Heidi attended St. Monica Elementary School, graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1990, and went on to attend Michigan State University where she earned her degree in building construction management. With her degree she was able to pursue her career in Colorado. She enjoyed camping, fishing, golfing, playing softball, cooking and spending time with her family and the many friends she had in Kalamazoo, Lansing and Colorado. He was born May 14, 1945 in Paducah Kentucky, the son of Sammie E. Taylor and Frankie M. Howard-Rhea. He moved to Kalamazoo Michigan in 1956 where he later met and married the love of his life, Patricia (Pat). Sammie was the proud father of Brian Keith and Kevin Lamar. With the union of his beautiful wife Patricia, they proudly shared his one and only daughter, Dawn Marie (Douglas Leonard Essix, Sr.), and four sons, Sean Rhea and Christopher Edward, Michael Aaron and Andre Phillip. Sammie attended and graduated from the Kalamazoo Public School system and received other special vocational training to succeed in his field of endeavor. He was honorably discharged from the United States Army after serving in Germany. He was employed as a Quality Control Engineer for Checker Motors for over 30 years where his skills were highly recognized. A dedicated and faithful Christian, Sammie was an active member of Bethel Star Church of God in Christ, under the leadership of Pastor Samuel Baker. Some of the positions held by Sammie were Deacon, Chairman of Trustee Board, Sunday School Teacher and Praise Team Leader. He was greatly admired and respected by Pastor(s) and congregation(s) members. Sammie was always studying and sharing God's Word. He was a man of great faith. He lived and breathed the scriptures he believed in. Sammie was greatly respected for his leadership abilities, motivational skills and supportive nature. He found the good in all he met and was always a gracious host. His family was the most important part of his life. A great father and husband, Sammie was full of love of family and spent all his time making his family and friends happy. He was always the family photographer. He especially loved his Mother who raised him to become the great man he was. She stood beside him through the illness of both he and his wife. Mother Rhea has been a nurse, friend, confidant, caregiver and never ending nurturer of faith. She has prayed with him, sang to him, read the word with and to him, encouraged him and saw him through the good times and the challenges of life until his last breath. She has gone over and above the duty of a mother in every way. She has shown love and compassion in every way possible as only a mother could. A special tribute goes to a friend and brother, Elder Michael Holland, who comforted, cared and prayed for him, stood by his side until the Lord called him home. ROE - Climax, MI, Died Sunday, September 28, 1997. LaVern was born December 12, 1909 in Wakeshma Township, the son of Melvin and Elizabeth (PIERCE) ROE; and had been a lifelong Climax resident. He was employed in road and highway construction by Carl Goodwin & Sons of Allegan, retiring in 1969; he also had his own excavating company for many years. He was a member of the AFL-CIO Local #324 Operating Engineers; and a life member of Climax Prairie Masonic Lodge #59 F. & A.M. He was preceded in death by his wife, Inez ROE in 1983. Surviving are 2 sisters, Wilma TALMAGE of California. Made MEADS of Alma; many nieces and nephews. Services will be held 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at Langeland Climax Chapel Family Funeral Homes 205 E. Maple St. with Rev. Mr. David Hills, of Climax United Methodist Church, officiating. Interment will follow in Climax Prairie Home Cemetery. The family will receive friends at the Climax chapel on Wednesday one hour prior to service time.
