She was born April 17, 1926 in Bryn Mawr, PA, the daughter of the late Robert and Kathryn (Proctor) Burgess. Kathryn worked as a surgical nurse, telephone operator, K-Mart greeter, and during World War II, she was an arc welder. On July 3, 1966, Kathryn was united in marriage to Walter Boze, Jr., who preceded her in death on July 23, 1999. She was blessed with four children, Tim Worm, Patti Wait, Barbara Hooker, and Sally Beals; eight grandchildren; and six great-grandchildren. Kathryn enjoyed attending services at New Apostolic Church in Otsego, doing word search puzzles, and spending time with her family and friends. She will be greatly missed by everyone who knew her. Memorial services for Kathryn will be at 7:00 PM on Tuesday at New Apostolic Church in Otsego (M-89 and Jefferson Rd.). Private interment will be in Prairieville Cemetery at a later date. The eldest daughter of the late Ray and Gertrude Schoening, she was born on August 29, 1938 in Kalamazoo, Michigan. After attending public schools in Kalamazoo, she earned a BS degree in Pharmacy from the University of Michigan. While there, she was nominated to become a member of the Circle Honor Society and Lambda Kappa Sigma. She practiced Pharmacy in Michigan at the University of Michigan Health Center and at the Carle Clinic in Urbana, Illinois. Barbara was the beloved wife of Dr. Robert Slagel. Early married years were spent together at the University of Illinois, where Bob earned a Ph.D. in Chemistry. They began their family in Burnsville, Minnesota before moving to Upper St. Clair, Pennsylvania. Barbara was a loving and fabulous homemaker, cook, and mother to her two children, Deborah and David. She was always involved in their activities and served as a Girl Scout Leader. She we! nt on to become a very attentive and much loved Grandmother. The family moved to Savannah and settled at The Landings on Skidaway Island in 1979 when Bob joined the Union Camp Corporation. In 1988, Bob's job took them to Sparta, New Jersey and then England before his retirement from Union Camp in 1996 brought them back to their beloved friends and family in Savannah. Her family has always been very proud of Barbara's generous heart and gift for gathering friendships deep and strong wherever life took her. Barbara was an active member of each community they joined. She and Bob were always involved in church, singing in the choir and playing handbells. In 1966, she became a charter member of Chapter DP of P.E.O. in Burnsville, MN, solidifying a lifelong bond with that organization. She served as president and treasurer of P.E.O. local Chapter S. In Savannah, she was a member of the Landings Club and enjoyed her years playing team tennis before moving on to golf in later life.! Barbara was an avid game player, loving bridge. As early members of S kidaway Presbyterian Church, she and Bob have been keenly committed to their church family. Barbara for many years directed the handbell choir in addition to other duties. She was a former volunteer at Candler Hospital and buyer for the gift shop and was most recently a volunteer at Savannah Medbank and active with the Savannah Friends of Music puppet program. In the last few years, Orchids were a passion, and she had joined the Deep South Orchid Society. Surviving Barbara are her husband of 48 years, Robert Slagel; daughter Deborah Wilber (Todd) and their children, Sean and Christopher Kruchten and Gabrielle Wilber of Warrenton, Virginia; son David Slagel (Katherine) and their children, Elizabeth and Emily of Richmond Hill, Georgia; a sister Christeen Causey and her husband Jim of Plymouth, IN; a niece Sandy Garrison and her family of Plymouth, IN; a nephew Michael Causey and his family of The Woodlands, TX; and several dear cousins and extended family members. Sue was born October 18, 1945 in Hillsdale, MI, a daughter of Henry and Flossie (Emrich) Fansler. She graduated from North Adams High School in 1963 and later graduated with honors from Western Michigan University in 1982 with a Teaching Degree. Sue taught school at Otsego Baptist Academy in Otsego, MI from 1986 to 1996 when she retired. Sue was an active member of the Berean Baptist Church in Portage, MI where she was very involved in children's ministries, choir and taught ladies Bible studies. Sue was preceded in death by her father Henry Fansler in 2005. On July 17, 1965, Sue was married in Hillsdale to Larry J. Scharp, who survives. Also surviving are a son Brian (Jennifer) Scharp of Grand Rapids and a daughter Sheri (Matt) Puett of Rockford; four grandchildren, Sarah, Aaron, Joshua and Kelsie; her mother Flossie Fansler of Portage and a sister Carol Jensen of Muskegon; several nieces and neph! ews. Services will be held at 11 AM on Monday at Berean Baptist Church, 7813 South 12th St. with Pastor Bill Abernathy and Pastor Steve Nichols officiating. Interment in Ft. Custer National Cemetery. He served his country during the Korean War and was a meat cutter for over 50 years. Lavern was a lifelong member of Third Christian Reformed Church. He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather, and loved attending all of his families' sporting events. She practiced in Chile and in the United States retiring in 1986 from the Kalamazoo Regional Psychiatric Hospital as the Assistant Director of Nursing. Surviving Olga, is her husband John of 52 years, her children Jane (Chris) Wright, of Dallas TX, Lori Wesolowski of Traverse City, John (Kristin) Wesolowski of Delton, MI, and her two granddaughters Emily Wright and Claire Wesolowski. On November 21, 1947 he was united in marriage to his loving wife of 62 years, the former Adelaide Nakken who survives. Harold was a member of the First Reformed Church of Portage. Prior to his retirement, he was employed for 34 years with the Upjohn Company where he was the recipient of the prestigious Upjohn Award in 1967. Harold loved sports; in his younger years he enjoyed playing basketball, golf and horseshoes. He spent many summers in the U.P. at his cottage fishing and hunting and loved to travel out west to Texas and Arizona; and south to Florida. Surviving besides his wife are three children, Karen (Phil) Connor of Cadillac, Jim (Linda) VanderVeen, Terri (Dan) Jager; ten grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; two brothers, John VanderVeen, Jr., Robert (Alice) VanderVeen; two brother-in-laws, Harry Bailey, William Brown; an! d many nieces and nephews. On August 21, 1937, Dorothy was united in marriage to Earl Stonerock in Goshen, Indiana. She was employed by Comstock Public Schools for over 15 years until her retirement in 1974. Surviving are two children, Boyd (Jean) Stonerock of Lawton and Brenda (Fred) Getz of Kalamazoo; three grandchildren, Randy, Lisa, and Nathan (Amy) Stonerock; three great-grandchildren; two brothers, Milford (Florence) Belden of Vicksburg and Edwin Belden of Fremont, CA; and several nieces and nephews. Preceding her in death were her husband of 67 years, Earl; her parents; and one brother, Milo Belden. A wake will be held Monday from 5-8:00 o'clock at VFW Post 827, 323 N. Church Street, Kalamazoo. A Memorial service will take place at a later date in the near future and will be announced. "Evie" Age 78 Of Richland, MI Died unexpectedly Wednesday morning, January 6, 2010, at Borgess Medical Center, Kalamazoo, MI. Evie was born on June 28, 1931 in Kalamazoo and she was a lifetime resident of the Richland area. She was the daughter of Ernest W. and Bernice L. (Hazel) Chalker. Evie was an Off-Ice Official for the Kalamazoo Wings Hockey Team; was a member of the Richland Order of Eastern Star; the Red Hat Club and had been a Gull Lake school bus driver. She was a mainstay at the Richland's 4th of July Parade, by organizing and playing on the Richland Fire Department Dixieland Band Float since 1972, which is the longest and most continuous entry for the Parade. Her true passions in life were music, especially the banjo and piano, Gull Lake and most of all, her family and friends. In 1947, in Kalamazoo, Evie was united in marriage to Earl C. Hoffman, who preceded her in death on June 1, 2004. Surviving are her two sons, Richard C. "Rick" (Linda) Hoffman and Russell E. "Russ" Hoffman, both of Ric! hland; her two daughters, Sheryl K. Hoffman of Richland and Susan L. (Robert) Alkema of Hickory Corners, MI; nine grandchildren, Mindi Carr, Marci Hoffman, Terri Hoffman, Christi (David) North, Joni Hoffman, Gregory (Andrea) Alkema, Melissa (Trevor) Smith, Rob (fiance', Kelsey Brownell) Alkema and Meghan Alkema; eleven great-grandchildren; her sister, Marilyn (Walt) East of Richland and her brother, Bill (Lil) Chalker of Summerfield, FL. Evie was preceded in death by her parents; her two sisters, Dorothy Ashton aand Virginia Louis; her son, Ronald E. Hoffman in October, 1952 and her daughter-in-law, Debbie L. (Longfield) Hoffman in September, 2009. The funeral service to celebrate Evie's life will be held on Saturday, January 9th at 1:00 PM at the Gull Lake Area Community Church, 9292 East CD Avenue, Richland, 49083, with the Rev. Jan David DeWitt, Pastor of the New Hope Church of Richland, officiating. Friends may call on Saturday at the Church from 11:00 AM until service ! time. Interment will follow at Prairie Home Cemetery, Richland. A time of fellowship and an "Open Jam Session" will immediately follow the interment at the The Stagecoach (Blackhawk Restaurant), 8940 N. 32nd Street, Richland, from 3:00 PM to 5:00 PM. Age 67 Formerly of Kalamazoo Died January 2, 2010 at the William Childs Hospice House in Palm Bay, Florida. Jim was born December 2, 1942, the first child of Henry G. and Hazel E. Bos. He was a 1961 graduate of Kalamazoo Central High School and moved to Florida in 1984. He had been a resident of the Indian River Nursing Home located in West Melbourne Florida, for several years. Jim is survived by his mother, Hazel Bos of Kalamazoo; his wife Diana Bos; two sons Timothy (Terra) Bos of Honolulu HI, Matthew (April) Bos of Belleview FL, and two step-children, Doug Hanna and Kim (Rob) Helterbridle of Malabar, FL. The bright lights in his life were his grandchildren Tayler, Katie, Hailey, Ryan, Jordan, Jenna, and Teigan. He will be sadly missed by his siblings, Mary Bos of Tecumseh, MI, Tom (Deb) Bos, and Pat (Sterling) Weatherwax of Kalamazoo, and by many nieces, nephews and cousins. Age 67 Bingham Twp, MI Passed away on January 2, 2010, at Munson Hospice House after fighting cancer for thirteen years. Tom was born in Waterbury, CT on May 17, 1942, the son of Ivan and Alice (Fox) Coulter. He grew up in Cheshire, CT. He graduated from Olivet College, Olivet and Western Michigan University, Kalamazoo. He married Dorothy Jean (Jeannie) Popa on October 17, 1964. They recently celebrated their 45th wedding anniversary with family and friends. He was employed for four years by the Central Mutual Insurance Company of Van Wert, OH. He worked in Information Technology for the Upjohn Company of Kalamazoo, MI for 31 years. Upon retiring in 1999, Tom and Jeannie moved to their home on South Lake Leelanau. He worked for H & R Block of Traverse City, MI for a number of years and was treasurer of the Lake Leelanau Lake Association. Tom was preceded in death by his parents, his in-laws, John and Dorothy Popa, and his young son, Matthew. He is survived by his wife, Jeannie; son, Michael (Sherr! y) Coulter of Greenville, SC; daughter, Julie (William) Morris of Columbia, SC; and grandchildren, Kennedy and T. Clayton Coulter. Also surviving are his sister, Jean (Ralph) Edson; brothers-in-law John (Gayle) Popa, Dale (Jan) Popa, David (Karen) Popa, and Thaddeus (Nancy) Popa; sisters-in-law Paulette (Duane) Lueck and Marie (Joseph) Lawson; and many nieces and nephews. A funeral mass will be held at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Sutton's Bay, MI on Saturday, January 9, 2010 at 11 AM. Burial will take place at a later date at St. Michael's Cemetery.
