He passed away suddenly on January 5, 2010 at his home in Portage. He was the very beloved son of Dan H. Rineveld and Valerie L. (Davis) Rineveld. He also leaves behind two sisters, Wendy Kathleen and Marie Lynne, both of Portage. Grandparents James R. and Doris Davis, and Grandmother Elizabeth M. Rineveld, many aunts, uncles, cousins and extended family members as well as a large number of friends. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather Dan W. Rineveld. Matt was currently employed at One West Bank of Kalamazoo and loved his job with people as a Customer Service Representative. He had just received a recent promotion to Trainer. He had many passions in life and was always willing to be someone's friend. He loved movies, music, gaming, bowling, Transformer toys and The Muppets. He remained young at heart and loved Cedar Point trips and the family camp trips with his family each summer. He loved going to the Oshkosh (! Wisconsin) Air Shows and planned his vacations around it. He was a counselor at Lake Louise Methodist church camp, a member of the Portage Central High School marching band, and was a cast member in several of his high school musicals. Matt achieved the rank of Eagle Scout with Troop #243 with his father as scoutmaster. Friends will be received Thursday from 4-6 and 7-9 pm at the Life Story Funeral Home, Betzler-Kalamazoo 6080 Stadium Drive 375-2900. A service to honor his life will be held Friday 11 AM at Portage First United Methodist Church with visitation at the church one hour prior to the service. Interment will follow at South Portage Cemetery. Friends and family are invited to participate in a potluck remembrance dinner at the church following the interment. Leora worked at the State Hospital for 25 years and then worked subbing in the cafeteria for the Kalamazoo Public schools for 20 years. She was preceded in death by one son, David; a brother, Carl; and one sister, Ernesteen. Survivors includes five children: Sharon (Robert) Philipp, Evelyn (Larry) Freemire, Diane (John) Diestler, Mary (Jerry) Freemire, and Harvey (Susan) Kuiper; 16 grandchildren; 33 great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Clifford was born August 10, 1913 in Pierre, South Dakota and raised on a farm in Blount, SD, the son of Hayes and Selma (Westlund) Brown. He was a member of the Christian Church-Disciples of Christ and a 75 year member of the Masons. Prior to his retirement Clifford was a meat cutter for 40 years with various companies which included; Armintrouts, A&P, Carls Market, Hardings, and Town & Country. He was an avid sports fan and enjoyed golf, bowling, fishing, and dancing. He also enjoyed bird watching and crossword puzzles. On January 22, 1939 he married the former E. Marie "Jackie" Jaquith his loving wife of 52 years, who preceded him in death in 1991. He was also preceded in death by a brother, Erwin Brown; a sister, Hazel; and a nephew, Sonny Brown. He later married Betty L. Weaver who survives. Also surviving are his children, Janet (Bruce) Meulman, Marianne K. Brown, David (Joyce) Brown; nine grandchildren, Pam Platteborze-Hol! man, Stacy Meulman-Warner, Thomas Brown, Genevieve Brown, Shannon Meulman, Erika Lubieniecki, Sheryl Meulman, Steven Brown, Paul Lubieniecki; 11 great-grandchildren; and nieces, Sharon Russell and Lois Brown. He graduated from the University of Michigan and Wayne State School of Medicine. Board Certified in Family Practice, he practiced medicine in Allegan and Kalamazoo since 1963. He was a member of the Amercian Medical Association, Michigan State Medical Society and the Kalamazoo Academy of Medicine. Preceding him death were his son Roger J. Smith Jr; sister, Lorraine Rembelski and brother, David J. Smith. Surviving Dr. Smith are his wife, Karmena L. Smith; sister, Marilyn Ward (Dr. Ronald); brother-in-law, Dr. Konrads Lubavs (Aija); sister-in-law, Karen Smith; special family friend and colleague, Maj. Eric Kennedy and many nieces and nephews. Age 81 Of Kalamazoo Joanne died peacefully at home on Friday, January 15. She was born December 13, 1928 in Flint, Michigan, the daughter of Stanley and Mathea Powley. Joanne was educated at Oberlin College and the University of Chicago, receiving a Master's Degree in Social Work at the latter. She also met her husband, Ray, at the University of Chicago at a dormitory party, organized by Joanne, reportedly when Ray sought to register a complaint about the music that was being played (Joanne's selections!). Despite this bumpy start, they married shortly thereafter in 1952, and Ray survives her. She was devoted to her practice as a clinical social worker at the Child Guidance Clinic from 1967 to 1987. After retirement, she initiated the Head Start Parent Literacy Program in Kalamazoo, which endeavored to improve the reading skills of Head Start parents. Throughout life, Joanne maintained an abundant curiosity about the world around her. In particular, as a member of the People's Church of Kalamaz! oo, she led weekly Forum programs from 1996 to 2007 on topics ranging widely from foreign affairs to medical ethics to poetry. She continued this practice after she, Ray, and their son Eric moved to the Wyndham Retirement Community in 2005, where she lived at the time of her death. Besides husband Ray, she is survived by her two sons, Eric (of Kalamazoo) and Martin (of Chicago). As well, she is survived by her brother, Gerald Powley (of Empire, Michigan); and three grandchildren, Amelia Camperlengo (Hurst, Texas), Linda Huber (Bronxville, New York), and Matthew Huber (Sequim, Washington). Cremation has taken place. A Memorial Service is planned for Monday, January 18, 2010 at 12:00 Noon at the People's Church, 1758 North Tenth Street, Kalamazoo, followed by a reception commencing at 2 PM at Wyndham, 2300 Portage Road (Phillips Street entrance). Karie graduated from Mattawan High School in 1998 where she was a state tennis champion her sophomore year. She is also a member of Mattawan's Athletic Hall of Fame. Karie attended Indiana University where she earned a Bachelors Degree in Marketing and a Masters Degree in Sports Marketing from the Kelley School of Business. At IU she was a member of the Women's Tennis Team where she was twice team captain and was a member of the 2004 Big Ten Championship Team. She was last employed by Florida International University as the Assistant Women's Tennis Coach. He was born to Cornelius and Jean Allison (nee Alden) Rice September 21, 1911 Lawrence, Michigan. Baptized into the Congregational Church of Lawrence. He attended the one room Barnes school and graduated Lawrence High School, where he excelled at track. Taking one gold and one bronze metal for the mile in Van Buren County. He attended Western State Teachers College. Myron was united in marriage to Martha Ann Crain August 30, 1936. To them were born three children Myron Jr. (Kalamazoo) Nancy Olson (Gene) of Brimley and Pamela Benson (John) of Naubinway. He owned Myron Rice Electrical, Heating and Air Conditioning Co., later retiring from the City of Kalamazoo. He was an avid sportsman, and an officer in the Kalamazoo Chaper of the Sea Scouts. He loved playing bridge, reading and learning. During WWII he served with the Michigan State Troops, who were called to assist the National Guard. He lovingly remembered by his wife of seventy three years, t! hree children, nine grandchildren, nineteen great-grandchildren, two great-great-grandchildren several nieces and a nephew. Of Kalamazoo, MI Died early Saturday morning, January 16, 2010 at Bronson Methodist Hospital. She was born December 9, 1926 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, daughter of Ray and Evelyn (Clay) Campbell. On July 22, 1946, Marilyn was united in marriage to Roy G. Lampman. Surviving are their two children, Sandy (Jim) Cooke of Eldorado Hills, CA and Mark (Jeanne) Lampman of Kalamazoo; four grandchildren; one sister, Jean Stewart of Kansas; and several nieces, nephews, and cousins. Preceding her in death were her husband of 59 years, Roy, on February 10, 2006; her parents; and one brother, Donald Campbell. Memorial services for Marilyn will be held at 10:00 AM on Monday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, with Rev. James Dyke officiating. There will be no visitation. Of Kalamazoo Ida passed away Saturday morning, January 16, 2010. She was born February 7, 1913, in Rienville, Minnesota, the daughter of George and May (Hoeksma) Wiersma and has been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident. On September 14, 1934, she was united in marriage to Franklin A. Gordon. For 32 years she had worked as a cashier with several different grocery stores. Ida was a longtime member of the Lane Blvd. United Methodist Church where she had been active with United Methodist Women and the Fellowship Class. Preceding Ida in death was her husband, Frank on May 7, 1983; also by her parents; her son, Robert Gordon; her grandson, Gregory Marr; and by all her siblings, Sadie Triesenberg, Margie Winkel, Myron Wiersma and Garrett Wiersma. Surviving are her daughter, Joyce (Floyd) Marr of Portage; six grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; 13 great-great-grandchildren; nieces and nephews. The family will receive friends on Monday from 1 to 2 PM at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Porta! ge Chapel, 411 E. Centre Ave., where a funeral service will begin at 2:00 PM Monday with Pastor Matt Weiler officiating. A private interment will be in Mt. Ever-Rest. She was born January 11, 1926 in Detroit, MI, the daughter of Walter F. and Thusnelda (Binhammer) Bach. She was a member of Zion Lutheran Church. Surviving are three children, Mark (Linda) Dmytro of Kalamazoo, Kathy "Tuss" Wohlford of Rockford, and Chris (Jay) Patrick of Gurnee, Illinois; seven grandchildren, four great-grandchildren; two brothers and three sisters-in-law. Preceding her in death were her beloved husband, Walter, on February 13, 1992; her parents and two brothers. "Valerie" Of Kalamazoo Passed away January 11, 2010, at her residence in Kalamazoo. She was born January 25, 1915, in Kalamazoo, to the late Franklin and Florence (Snook) Herrick. Valerie was united in marriage to Donald G. Cote, who preceded her in death in 1997. Valerie was very intelligent and self educated and loved great literature. One of her great joys was discussing books with her grandchildren. She was well read, even in her later years, and knew exactly what was happening in the world as well as in her local community. She was an excellent cook and loved to bake and cook for her family and others. One of her great pleasures was looking for new recipes. She was a great seamstress making dresses for herself and others, as well as special quilts for her grandchildren. Her family will miss her inquisitive mind and lively conversations. Surviving Valerie are her children, Donald C. Cote of Key West , FL and Diane (Roger) VanDyke of Richland, MI, and Miami Beach, FL; four grandchildren; many g! reat and great-great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Also preceding Valerie in death were her brother, Paul Herrick, and a daughter-in-law, Sandra Cote. She was a free spirit, and cared for all living things, big and small. No words will ever be able to describe how loving her heart was or how big her spirit was and still is. She loved to talk and share stories, collect jewelry, and especially loved her family. She is survived by her son, Derek Dewees, his wife Lindsay, and her precious grandchildren, Chaise and Aden. Age 84 Of Galesburg Formerly of Augusta Died January 16, 2010. Bertha was born October 10, 1925 in Kalamazoo to Albert and Elizabeth (Vermulen) Nuyen Sr. She graduated from Plainwell High School in 1944. Bertha was a factory worker at various companies, including Southerland in Kalamazoo and Eaton's. She was a member of the Bible Baptist Church. She enjoyed puzzles and crocheting and was a foster grandmother at the Child Development Center in Augusta. Bertha married Charles Wood on October 11, 1975. They were happily married for 23 years until his passing in 1998. Bertha is survived by four loving daughters, Janie (Tim) Watson of Key West, Florida, Betsy (Jim) Davis of Galesburg, Susan Moleski and Kimberly Boyd, both of Augusta; seven grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; step-children, Danny (Sandi) Wood, Diane Wood, and Sally Prielipp, all of Battle Creek; several step-grandchildren and great-step-grandchildren; and two sisters, Kathryn Hayden and Irene Ciesielski. Bertha was preceded in death by her husband, C! harles Wood; two brothers, one sister, and one step-son. Funeral services to celebrate Bertha's life will be 11:00 AM, Wednesday, January 20, 2010 at the FARLEY-ESTES & DOWDLE Funeral Home Augusta Chapel Interment will follow at Floral Lawn Memorial Gardens.
