Of Kalamazoo Went home to be with his Lord on Friday, January 22, 2010. Don was born November 17, 1920, in Kalamazoo, the son of Cornelius and Lean (Van Gemert) VanWeelden and has been a lifelong area resident. On January 6, 1943, he was united in marriage to the former Flora Rhem. Throughout the years, he loved working on his farm and for many years he owned and operated Van Instrument until his retirement in 2004. Don was very active in church work, serving in many capacities. He was a member of the former Third Reformed Church and had served as a board member for Gun Lake Chapel for 17 years. Preceding Don in death were his parents; his son, Dale VanWeelden and by a brother, Burt VanWeelden. Surviving are his loving wife of 67 years, Flora VanWeelden; his son, James (Ann) VanWeelden of Kalamazoo; his daughter, Sue (Richard) Moss of Kalamazoo; a daughter-in-law, Shelly Russell; a granddaughter, Jessica DeHaan; three step-grandchildren and eight step-great-grandchildren. The family will! receive friends on Monday, January 25 from 12-1 PM at Centerpoint Church (Third Reformed Church, 2345 North 10th St.) where a funeral service will be held beginning at 1:00 PM Monday with Rev. Dar VanderWal officiating. A private burial will take place in West Cooper Cemetery. Of Kalamazoo, Michigan Patricia Kullenberg passed away on January 20, 2010, at Bronson Methodist Hospital in Kalamazoo, with her family at her side. Patricia was born in Tulsa, Oklahoma on July 23, 1933. She grew up in Tulsa, graduated from Tulsa Central High School in 1951, and completed one year at the University of Tulsa before she was married to Roger D. Kullenberg, of Benton Harbor, Michigan, on October 4, 1952. Patricia is survived by her husband Roger, of Kalamazoo, and her three daughters, Laura Kullenberg, of Pristina, Kosovo, who is an Operations Officer for the World Bank, Ann Kullenberg, of Frankfort, Michigan, who teaches mathematics at the Interlochen Arts Academy in northern Michigan and Amy Kullenberg, of Dowagiac, Michigan, who is an attorney with the Pokagon Band of Potawatomi Indians. Patricia is also survived by two brothers, Alex R. Wilson (Helen) of Tulsa, OK, and Leroy Wilson of Sarasota, FL; one sister, Grace Gamble of Norman, OK and many beloved nieces and nephews. Patricia was predeceased by her sister, Cora Mae Ogilvie of Huntington Beach, California and by her son-in-law, Quentin Sherwood of Frankfort, Michigan. Patricia and Roger both were long affiliated with the Kalamazoo Gazette. Patricia managed the Gazette's Credit Union from the mid-1960s until 1983, when Roger left his position as editorial page editor with the Gazette to become managing editor of the ! Muskegon Chronicle. While in Muskegon, Patricia participated in community and voluntary activities, patronized the arts, and made many dear friends. She and Roger also were avid hockey fans, both in Muskegon and Kalamazoo. While in Muskegon, Patricia and Roger lived near Lake Michigan, where Patricia especially enjoyed watching summer sunsets and the annual Tall Ship Festival. In 1988, Patricia and Roger returned to Kalamazoo when Roger was appointed to become assistant to the publisher for the Kalamazoo Gazette. After their return to Kalamazoo, Patricia and Roger began what was one of the happiest periods of their lives - traveling throughout the U.S. and abroad, beginning with a trip to visit their daughter Laura in Ethiopia in 1989. Patricia and Roger subsequently visited all of the major countries in Europe, and made two trips to New Zealand and Australia. Patricia was particularly fond of Italy. When not traveling, Patricia enjoyed crosswords, opera, hockey, and garden! ing. Patricia was also an avid bridge player and spent many years play ing in marathon leagues with her bridge partner and dear friend, Beverlee White of Kalamazoo. Patricia was a loving, devoted and loyal wife, and a wonderful mother. She was witty, curious, and compassionate. She had an uncanny radar where her daughters were concerned, which was matched only by her keen interest and awareness of world events. A memorial service will be held on Friday January 29, 2010, at 4:00 PM at the Park Club (South and Rose Streets) in downtown Kalamazoo, with a reception following. Arrangements for cremation have been made by the Avink Funeral Home of Schoolcraft. Interment will be at the Mountain Home Cemetery in Kalamazoo. Jack was born December 17, 1928 in Kalamazoo, MI, a son of Floyd and Margaret (Boekeloo) Short and was a lifelong resident. Jack's father died when Jack was only 12 years old and he was raised by his step-father Darrel Camburn. He was a graduate of Sturgis High School, Class of 1946. Jack served in the U.S. Navy during the Korean Conflict and while in the service was trained in photography. He was extremely creative and had an eye for photography. He owned and operated Jack Short's Commercial Photography for many years. Jack was a long time member of the Northwest United Methodist Church and also a member of the Civitan Club, past president of the Advertising Round Table, member of the Metal Detecting Club and a founder of the Bottle Digging Club. He loved life and loved his family. Jack was preceded in death by his parents, a son Earl Nutter and a step-brother Dale Camburn. On May 17, 1959, Jack was married to Betty McEwen! , who survives. Troy Formerly of Kalamazoo Passed away suddenly January 18, 2010. J.R. was born October 3, 1959, in Kalamazoo, the son of Waymon L. and Sylvia M. (Hughes) Klutts. He was a 1977 graduate of Parchment High School. J.R. was an employee of Proto Plastics in Troy, where he was a die setter, and was a former employee of Graphic Packaging in Kalamazoo, with over twenty five years of service. J.R. enjoyed camping, golfing, and watching sports. He will be remembered as a dedicated worker and for his love of his family. On March 8, 1986, he married Lori Louden, who survives. Other members of his family include, a daughter and son in law, Holly and Mark Morris of Kalamazoo, a brother and sister in law Frank and Linda Bianco of Rochester Hills, a sister Josephine Bianco of Paw Paw, and several nieces and nephews. Although her parents emigrated here from Sweden, she was born in Bismarck, North Dakota on June 22, 1923. She divided her time between Sweden and Bismarck when she growing up. She attended Mills College in Oakland, California, graduating in 1945. She continued her education and obtained a Masters degree in 1947. Chris started her professional career with Halle Brothers Department Store in Cleveland, Ohio where she worked as a buyer. There she met her future husband Frank N. Jarvis. They were married on September 1st, 1951 in Columbus, Ohio. They had two sons, George and Frank. Chris left her career so she could stay home to raise their two sons. Aside from raising her family, she also volunteered her time at the Cleveland Clinic and enjoyed participating in sailboat races with her husband on Lake Erie. The family moved to Kalamazoo in 1972 when Frank accepted a position with Gilmore Brothers Department Stor! e. After retirement, Chris and Frank traveled extensively, including trips to Russia and China, and an extended 6-month stay in London where Chris was able to attend performances of theater and ballet, which she enjoyed so much. Chris Jarvis died at home on January 16, 2010. She is survived by her husband of 58 years, Frank Jarvis; her two sons George and Frank, (Nancy Jarvis); a grandson, Christopher Cinq-Mars Jarvis; and a brother, Gilbert Olson. There will be a reception at Kalamazoo Country Club on Thursday, January 21, in the evening, from 5-7 PM. Lucille was born March 27, 1919, in Battle Creek, to the late Vern and Margaret (Long) King. She was united in marriage on November 1, 1940 to Harm R. Dykehouse, who preceded her in death on June 6, 1995. Lucille graduated from Bronson School of Nursing and worked as an RN for many years. She enjoyed traveling, camping, fishing with the family and bowled in numerous leagues for many seasons. Later in life she became involved with volunteer work. The family would like to thank Maria Varnesdeel and her family for their care and love of Lucille in her later years. Roy was born March 23, 1922 in Coldwater, Michigan son of Garry and Jesse Nichols. He was raised on the family farm with his seven siblings. He attended Michigan State College but left early to joined the army in 1942 during WWII. While being discharged in 1945 he met his future bride, Hilda Midkiff. They were married on August 10, 1947. He was employed by Peters Construction Company. In 1954 Roy bought Peters from Al Peters. He retained ownership until 1990 when he retired. Roy and Hilda lived in Galesburg for 30 years where they raised their four daughters. Later they moved to Vicksburg where Roy had a 100 acres to move dirt, drive his tractors, and keep up his beautiful ponds. He loved fixing things and collected old engines. For 35 years they spent their winters boating and fishing in Bokeelia, Florida. Surviving are his wife, Hilda, and four daughters, Sharon Nichols of Lansing, MI, Suzanna Falk (Roger) of Portage, MI, Sandy Hunter (Craig! ) of Kalamazoo, MI, Becky Nichols of Chandler, AZ. Roy and Hilda have 11 grandchildren Brian, Bob, Jenny and Kim Hale; Jake and Emily Falk; Gary, Cassie, and Dianna Hunter; Sam and Olivia Nichols and seven great-grandchildren. He was born February 1, 1931 in Kalamazoo, MI. His predecessors came to Southwest Michigan in the early 1800's. His parents were Theodore Allen Mills and Fern Laverne McNees. Prior to entering the military in 1951, where he served as a Marine during the Korean Conflict, he worked in the family owned Octagon Restaurant and Reliable Garbage Service. He married Joanne Elaine Clark on August 31, 1951. As a child, Ted grew up in the Oakwood neighborhood and was well known for the number of mischievous acts he and his friends were involved in. While Ted was known as a prankster he will be most remembered as a loving father to Michele Mills (Ron Shuster) and Leslie Mills-Brooks (Ted Brooks). While working 14-hour days, there was not a school event or athletic event his daughter's were involved in that he did not attend. A quiet man when it came to his personal feelings, he showed his love to his wife a! nd children by always being there. He also had a very special relationship with his grandson Christopher Lee Barnes and his wife Letizia Lirot Barnes and his granddaughter Jennifer Elizabeth Barnes Albertson and her husband Zachary Albertson. On July 22, 2006, Ted was honored by being his grandson's Best Man at his wedding. Ted was eagerly anticipating the birth of his first great-grandchild from his granddaughter Jennifer. Ted was preceded in death by his brother Douglas Carter Mills and sister Joyce Mills Haas and his special friend Max, his faithful and loving dog. Besides his wife, children and grandchildren, Ted is survived by two nieces Linda White Sweet and Virginia Moffit Hartman, several great nieces and nephews, their children and his little dog Sophie. Services will take place Wednesday, 2:00 o'clock at the Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Memorial Chapel, 622 S. Burdick St., where visitation will be from 1-2:00 o'clock, prior to services.
