She was born December 13, 1939 in Chicago, IL, the daughter of Lloyd and Georgina (Smith) Darner. Betty inspired many people with her courage. She has spent her lifetime loyal to family and friends. For 30 years she operated a daycare center and many area young people remember her. Surviving are her husband, Wes R. Wetters of Texas Corners; children, Lawrence "Ray", Cecil and Elmer Morris; granddaughter, Amber Earth Sisson Morris and granddaughter of her heart, Ryan Sisson; brothers, Lloyd Darner, Ron (Char) Darner, Richard (Linda) Darner, Larry (Karen) Darner; sisters, Joyce (Cecil) Williams, Bobbie (Richard) Wiechman, Patty (Lee) Loudenslager; and many wonderful nieces and nephews. She is also survived by loving in-laws, John and Janet O'Leary, Bill Wetters, Harry and Carol Wetters, Don and Joyce Wetters; step-children, Steve (Cheryl) Wetters, Erick (Diane) Wetters, Jeff (Libbie) W! etters, David Wetters; and step-grandchildren, Bradley, Raegan, Tyler, Jarrett, Krysten, Katelyn, and Andrew. She wishes especially to remember neighbors of 45 years, Joyce and Paul Getz and their daughters, Jan, Mary Ann and Carol. She was preceded in death by parents, Lloyd and Jean Darner, sister, Gloria Darner Prouty and husband of 20 years, Dick Morris, husband of seven years, Bob Koss, and Chuck Nuyer, companion for five years. Betty will be missed by her husband, large family, many relatives, friends and neighbors. Funeral services for Betty will be at 1:00 PM on Monday at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Portage Chapel, 411 E. Centre Avenue with Pastor Suzanne Kornowski officiating. As lifelong area resident she was employed with The Upjohn Company for many years prior to her retirement. Lena was a longtime member of the Bethel Baptist Church. The joy of Lena's life was her family. She also welcomed into their home the many friends and family who came to visit through the years. On November 30, 1938, she was united in marriage to Adrian Van Kesteren, who preceded her in death on March 20, 2005. She was also preceded in death by all of her siblings, Klaas Tanis, Jr., Alice Vanderhoff, Peter Tanis, Ebeling Tanis. Surviving are her children, Loretta (Ed) Moore and Ellen (Harold) Grevenstuk all of Kalamazoo, Norene (Rev. Roger) Russ of Ghana, West Africa and Gail Van Kesteren of Kalamazoo; five grandchildren, Douglas (Ruth) Grevenstuk, Glenn (Wanda) Grevenstuk, Jonathan Moore, Stephen (Nadean) Moore and! Stan, the son of Adrian and Maude (Dey) Van Dam was born July 1, 1924, in Kalamazoo, Michigan where he was a resident most of his life. He was a U.S. Army veteran of World War II, where he had served in Italy and in four campaigns in the European African Middle Eastern Theatres where he received four bronze stars; and later became a member of the American Legion. Stan loved working as a building contractor. He owned and operated Van Dam Bros. Builders for 41 years with his brother, Harold and later his son, Bob. Throughout the years he made numerous friends in his business and built many beautiful homes. He was very talented and always proud of his accomplishments. After Stan retired in 1989, he and his devoted wife of 30 years, Joanne, moved to Bradenton in 1992 and bought a home at Tara Golf and Country Club. He lov! ed being a member of the Country Club and made many friends there. Stan was an avid golfer, taking pride in his game and enjoyed playing with his buddies in Michigan and Florida. He also enjoyed fishing with his son, Bob and friends in Michigan. Family meant so much to Stan, his children and grandchildren were the highlight of his life. He loved the fun of family get-togethers, whether visiting Michigan or families vacationing near him in Florida. Stan was always upbeat and happy even throughout his long illness. He was predeceased by his brother and wife, Harold and Marie Van Dam; sister and husband, Wilma and Steve Nederhoed and step-son, Kenneth Draayer. Surviving are his wife, Joanne Van Dam (Piper) of Bradenton; sister, Marion (Robert) Tracy of Portage; four children, son, Robert (Pam) Van Dam of Portage, daughters, Linda (Brian) DeDoes of Hickory Corners, Sharon (Bradley) Norg of Zeeland, and Karen Pittman of Kalamazoo; three step-children, Sherrie Draayer of Portage,! Brett Gowen of Schoolcraft, and Deana (Ken) Crane of Portage; 25 gran dchildren and four great-grandchildren; many nieces and nephews. As a child, he lived in Apple Creek then Biehle, MO until his journey to Techny Boys High School in Techny, IL, then to Girard, PA to attend the Sacred Heart College and Seminary. On November 6, 1937, he married Esther E. Huber in Detroit, MI. Mr. Pingel was a tool and die maker for Chrysler Motors/Desoto Division in Detroit, MI until he moved his family to Kalamazoo, MI where he worked as head of the Tool and Die department at Checker Motors for several years until his retirement. His interests included poetry writing, playing the organ, choir director, coaching and playing baseball. He was a devoted member of St. Augustine Catholic Church and volunteered his time to senior services after retirement. He leaves behind his children, Beatrice (John) Simcox of Fairfax, VA, Bernard J. (Suzanne) Pingel of Indianapolis, I! N, James R. (Chris) Pingel, Michael (Tonya) Pingel, and Paul Pingel of Kalamazoo, MI; and several grandchildren and great grandchildren. His lovely wife, Esther preceded him in death, an infant son, Paul Pingel, and his two brothers, Steve, Lonnie, and two sisters, Lillian Marasco and Sister Imelda Pingel. Marian "Midge" was born September 12, 1918, on the family farm near Hastings, MI, the daughter of Louis and Nina (Otis) Erway. On December 26, 1940, she was married to Serafino (Gus) Gesmundo. They met and performed together in circus aerial acts in the late 1930's. After World War II, Marian and Gus became part owners of Erway's Home Bakery on Davis Street in Kalamazoo. They moved from Davis Street to a cottage on Gull Lake in 1948. They established Serafino's Party Store in Richland, in 1961, which they owned and operated until retirement in 1980. Marian was a fun-loving, spirited woman and a devoted wife and mother committed to her large family of 11 children. She said her greatest accomplishment was raising and loving her children. "I felt great pride in seeing how they turned out. We never gave up on them even during the trying times and I think they are all pretty wonderful." In Midge's ! home, love was unconditional and freely applied. Her house was always full - cousins came to live with the family; friends of her children and grandchildren were always welcome. Even when the family table was full, space was always made for others. For over 60 years, she enjoyed family gatherings at the lake which continued to grow in size as grandchildren, great-grandchildren, cousins and friends were added to the mix. The empty lot next to the family home became the gathering place for pot-luck celebrations where Gus and Midge always supplied ice cream cones for dessert, and where fun activities like swimming, skiing, tubing, fishing, volleyball, bocce ball, and others often took place simultaneously. Midge was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church of Gull Lake and in her younger years served the community through various organizations including the Girl Scouts, United Way, St. Ann's Parish Guild and lay ministry, Marriage Encounter, and the Gull Lake Ambulance Service. S! urviving her are her; six sons, Joseph (Sherry Dueweke) Gesmundo of Ri chland, Jack (Martha) Gesmundo of Delton, Gary (Gayla) Gesmundo of Hickory Corners, John Paul Gesmundo of Portage, James (Barb) Gesmundo of Kalamazoo, and Jay (Michele Libbrecht) Gesmundo of Richland; and five daughters, Gail (Jim) Gesmundo-Lyons of Florida, Judah (Paul Raynes) Gesmundo, Maria Gesmundo-Ferguson, Vicki (Mike Marcinek) Gesmundo, and Marymarie (Mark) Rice all of Richland; her brother, Norman (Willie) Erway of Madison, Wisconsin; many nieces and nephews including Victor and Myrna Gesmundo who lived with the family during their high school years; 26 grandchildren; and 36 great grandchildren. Ellen could not overcome the five grave illnesses that claimed her. Ellen was born in Lake City, September 8, 1930. Her much loved sister, Margaret passed as has her folks, Albert and Macila Porteous Deuell. Ellen leaves behind her brother, Richard and sister, Kathleen Graub and several nieces and nephews. Ellen worked for Mead's Corporation - faithfully for 48 years and never missed a days work. Ellen has shared her life with Jo-An Watson, in their home in Kalamazoo, for fifty years. He was born December 21, 1923 in Lake Linden, MI, the son of Dalma and Grandaline (Gagnon) Daniels. Jerry graduated from high school in 1941. He was awarded a one year scholarship to Michigan State University, after which he worked at the Arctic Ice Cream Co. in Kalamazoo. Jerry was a veteran of the United States Army serving during World War II as a teletype operator from 1946-1950. Following his service in the Army, returned to Kalamazoo and attended four years at Western Michigan University, and began working for American National Bank in 1950, where he worked for 40 years until his retirement. Surviving are his wife, Mary Daniels; daughter, Robyn Stephens of Portage; two step-sons, Dale (Bonnie) Reed of Kalamazoo and Larry (Lisa) Reed of Bloomingdale; and numerous grandchildren, step-grandchildren, great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents; two brothers, Bart and Morris Daniels; one sister, Sr. Daniel Marie Daniels; and son-in-law, Tom Stephens. I couldn't find her in any census after 1880 either. I did find a couple of James' that could be the right one, but the middle initial was H not R. I did some searching, Family Search Michigan marriages 1868-1925. James R. Fitzgerald 25 years old born 1855 in MI married Ida M. Mail 18 years old born 1862 in Michigah/should be New York. married on 21 April 1880 in Farwell, Clare, Michigan. Thank you so much, now hope I can find more about her.
