She was also preceded by two brothers, Verne and Marv and a granddaughter, Jennifer Lambert. On April 7, 1947, Arlene married Kenneth H. Duemler, who has been and continues to be her protector. Arlene is also survived by their seven children, Irene, Paul, Therese (Kevin), Mary, Steve (Sue), James (Bridget) and David. There are also 18 very caring grandchildren who adore their grandmother, Catherine (Tom), John (Becky), Tina (Cory), Melissa (Jason), Angela (Brent), Kevin II (Amy), Travis (Brooke), Jennifer, Matt, Christopher and Gabriel. Also added to the family are 14 very precious great grandchildren, CJ, Jacob, Morgan, Hannah, Emma, Ryan, Taylor, Morgan, Kevin III, Luke, Conner, Peyton, a new baby due in September and one adopted angel in waiting. She is also survived by her sisters, Margaret and Shirley (Dave); sister-in-law, Sharon; brother-in-law, Fred (Joann). ! There are also several special nieces and nephews. Mom loved her family, everything in the world centered around her family. She was our confidant, sounding board, champion and cheer leader with a marvelous sense of humor. Mom loved to cook and would be the first one to fix a meal if someone did not feel good or she thought she could help out. And when she saw a need, she filled it. She always had a plan and urged us to complete our many tasks. Filling her wishes became our joy. Arlene/Wife/Mom/Grandma/ Sister/Aunt will be missed but she will always be close to us in our hearts. She has given each of us a gift and shown us family is the most important thing in life. Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Friday at 11:00 AM in St. Catherine of Siena Church, 1150 W. Centre Ave., with Rev. Fr. Chris Ankley and Rev. Fr. John Fleckenstein, Celebrants. Esther was born on October 31, 1915 in Saginaw County, MI, the daughter of Frederick and Sophia (Nurminger) Rohloff. Esther was married to Elmer Buetow for 56 years. She was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Midland, MI for 60 years, and for the past 11 years she was a member of Zion Lutheran Church in Kalamazoo. She was a 1937 graduate of St. Mary's School of Nursing in Saginaw, MI and a lifelong member of the school's alumnae group. Esther was a member of St. John's Lutheran Ladies Aid Society, Mary-Martha service organization, Lutheran Women's Missionary League, Midland Little League Baseball Mothers' Auxiliary, Midland County Nurses Association, and she was the Friendship Ambassador for Park Place Assisted Living. Elmer and Esther were among the founding parents of St. John's Lutheran School in Midland, MI. She provided private duty nursing services from 1939 to 1942 for the wife of! H.H. Dow, the founder of Dow Chemical Company in Midland, MI. She dedicated countless hours of service to members and friends of St. John's Lutheran Church. Esther was preceded in death by her husband, Elmer O. Buetow; her parents; four brothers, Carl Rohloff, Ruben Rohloff, Norman Rohloff, her twin brother, Paul Rohloff, and a sister, Marie Rohloff. Esther is survived by three sons: Paul (Diane) Buetow of St. Louis, MO, Tom (Beatrix) Buetow of Louisville, KY and John (Candy) Buetow of Kalamazoo, MI; nine grandchildren; ten great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Fred was born September 14, 1926 in Kalamazoo, MI, a son of Jacob and Louise (Grams) Westra and had lived in Kalamazoo for most of his life. He served in the U.S. Army during World War II and was employed for 23 years as a semi-driver for Spartan Stores until his retirement in 1980. Fred was a member of Bethany Reformed Church for 65 years. He enjoyed fishing and traveling. Fred was very patriotic and was a member of the D.A.V. and the American Legion. Surviving are his loving wife and mother of their children, Sylvia, to whom he was married on August 8, 1945. Also surviving are six children, Jay (Linda) Westra, Margaret Westra, Robert Westra, Daniel (Sherry) Westra, David (Cindy) Westra and Donald (April) Westra; 18 grandchildren; 32 great-grandchildren and a great-great-grandson; 10 brothers and sisters, Jacob L. She was born into the Barodicz family on May 4, 1926, in Hamtramck, MI; the fifth of six children. Rita graduated from Hamtramck High School where she played basketball. On October 10, 1948, she married David Wakefield. Through the years they lived in East Detroit, Warren and Tennessee, finally making their home in Kalamazoo in 1997. Rita was a devoted Christian her whole life, and together with her husband, they made the Parchment United Methodist their home church. With Rita's love of music, she joined the choir at the church. Along with listening to a wide range of music she loved to read. Through the years she held several jobs, but her greatest work was caring for her family. She supported her husband in all his endeavors. She especially loved his work at the Kalamazoo Air Zoo for the last 10 years, where she had also worked in the gift shop. Rita's children and grandchildren were always on he! r mind and she did everything she could to support and encourage them in their lives. Her family includes her husband of 62 years, David; children: Richard & Mary Wakefield of White Lake, MI, Patrick & Connie Wakefield of Macomb Twp., MI and daughter-in-law Linda Wakefield of Kalamazoo; grandchildren: Kerry & John, Kyle, Shawn, Stephen, Shelby, Brittany, Colin, Tyler, Samantha, and Abigail; and great-grandchildren: Madison and Lyla. Howard was born in Kalamazoo and attended Kalamazoo Public schools graduating in 1944. He served in the Navy during the last months of WWII and was recalled to active duty from the reserves to serve during the Korean War. Howard returned to Kalamazoo and enrolled in W.M.U. obtaining a B.A. and M.A. in Social Science. He was offered a position at Prairie State College in Chicago Heights, IL. He began his career in the Social Science Department in 1968 and retired in 1999. Howard is survived by a loving brother, Robert (Shirley) Luckey, sister Patricia (Walt) Chmiel. He was a dear uncle to Paul (Lorie) Chmiel, Sherri (Chuck) Martin, Kelli (Scott) Morrison and five great nephews. Pre-deceasing him was sister Imogene Luckey. Lambert Of Kalamazoo Passed from this life on February 23, 2010 in Kalamazoo. Lamb was born on December 8, 1912 to Riner and Reka Doezema in Grand Rapids, MI. He graduated from Calvin College in 1935 and from the Theological School of the Protestant Reformed Churches in 1938. He and Joanne Hoeksema were married on December 21, 1938 in Grand Rapids and soon thereafter moved to California where he served a church in Bellflower. From 1954 to 1956 he studied theology at the Free University of Amsterdam, where he received the Doctorandus Degree in 1955. Lamb subsequently served churches in Grand Rapids, MI; Drayton, Ontario, Canada; and Parchment, MI. He retired from the ministry in 1977. After retirement, Lamb and Jo served two years in mission schools in Nigeria and one year in the Philippines. Lamb was preceded in death by his wife, Jo; a son, Tom and by his brothers, Charles and William. He is survived by his children, Ryan (and his wife, Mary Ellen), Herman (and his wife, Frances), David (and hi! s wife, Linda), Ruth (and her husband, Carlos), Lee (and his wife, Sarah) and Mary (and her husband, Joel); 19 grandchildren; 7 great grandchildren. He was born October 5, 1937 in Brownsville, TX to the late Antonio and Alvira (Villarreal) Rocha. Joe was united in marriage on December 8, 1984 to the former Darlene Van Vleet, who survives. Joe proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from July of 1954 until honorably discharged as a Staff Sergeant, in July of 1970. He also served in the Michigan National Guard for several years and a mailman for Kalamazoo for 21 years. He was a longtime member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Kalamazoo. He was a counselor for drug and alcohol abusers, for 15 years. Also surviving Joe are his children, Lisa K. Kalamazoo Passed away Tuesday, February 23, 2010. She was born January 7, 1926 in Kalamazoo, the daughter of Perley and Louise (Miller) Holdship and was a lifelong resident of Kalamazoo. Ann was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church of Kalamazoo, where she served for 44 years as the head of the Altar Guild. On July 26, 1945, she married William J. Larsen. While Bill was stationed in Quantico, VA, he had proposed to Ann over the telephone, and when she accepted, he came home on a 30 day leave to get married. Two days after the wedding, Bill's leave was canceled, and he left for California, but that union lasted almost 65 years. Ann is survived by her husband, Bill; their daughter, Barbara (Paul) Adams of Kalamazoo; a granddaughter, Christina Adams of Kalamazoo; a brother, Thomas (Barbara) Holdship of Kalamazoo; two nieces, Suzy Squires and Molly Brawley; and a special cousin, Betty Kik. A Mass of the Resurrection will be celebrated on Saturday at 11:00 AM in St. Luke's Episcopal Chur! ch, 247 W. Lovell St., with The Rev. Fr. Jay Lawlor officiating. Loring was born in Chicago in 1942 and raised in Detroit, son of artist and harpist Ruth Loring Janes and bass trombone player Elmer Janes. Loring sang and played guitar, bass, and autoharp during the 1960s with the folk-pop group Friend and Lover. He also played with the Lone Star Statesman and with The World's Worst Flatpickers Association, and briefly with the Dixie Flyers, but most of his work was as a solo performer. He referred to himself as an urban revivalist, and he was considered an accomplished finger picker in the style of Merle Travis and Reverend Gary Davis; always able to get the 'Blind Boy Fuller' sound out of his guitar. Loring was known as a musician who "learned from the old guys."Loring was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Suzanne (Mosher) Janes of 26 years. Survived by daughter, Megan Janes-Smith; grandson, Geoffrey Justin Janes; great-granddaughter, Ivy Rayne Janes; brother, Chris Janes, sister-in-law, Wendy, and nephew, Craig, of Farmington Hills. Loring is survived also by his lady friend and traveling companion of the last twelve years, Susanna Campbell of Comstock. He was loved by and will be missed by many, including Susanna's children (George, Sheila, Thomas, Bonnie Jo and Michael Campbell and their spouses, Darcy Campbell, Matt Schwartz, and Christopher Magson) and Susanna's grandchildren (Kellee, Krystal, Kayla, Matthew, and Kennedy Campbell).Loring was a member of the Kalamazoo Rod and Gun Club and the National Rifle Association, and was formerly a Scout Master for the Boy Scout troop 1673. He was a founding member of the Kalamazoo Folklif! e Organization and he continued to work as a concert sound engineer. He worked as a printer, an auto mechanic and for a time as auto shop instructor at Comstock High School. He was a collector of guns, guitars, books, and tools. His friends and family knew him as a storyteller, a teacher, and a proofreader. When things went wrong, he blamed "the alignment of the moons of Jupiter." Cremation has taken place. A gathering of family and friends will be held Sunday from 2 to 5 PM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Comstock Chapel, 6121 King Highway. A musical celebration will be planned for summer; contact family and friends for more information. Dirk loved his family and friends above all else. He was known to find humor in just about everything and he enjoyed taking care of others in need. Among Dirk's many interests were, collecting hats of all kinds, he enjoyed a wide variety of music and he loved the game of football, especially after finally meeting Barry Sanders in person. Henry owned and operated "Shellman radio and TV repair", Henry enjoyed mathematics, finding great pleasure in solving mathematical equations and puzzles. Henry proudly served in World War II as a Army Veteran. Henry leaves behind to forever cherish his memory daughter, Doris A. Smith; his companion, Sue Heath, to whom he was once married to in his early life. Also surviving are his grandchildren, Laura, Robert, and Maureen; four great grandchildren, Josh, Quentin, Jason, and Jaime; one great great grandchild, Jayce; son-in-law, Robert Sternaman; along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends. He attended school in Lincoln Park, MI, Central Michigan University, and received his BSN at Nazareth College, he was in the process of obtaining a masters in Nursing Administration at WMU at the time of his death. He had been a Kalamazoo area resident for eight years and was employed with Borgess Hospital for 30 years. Dennis was also a member of various nursing organizations. He was preceded in death by his parents. Dennis is survived by his friend, William "Bill" A. Prentice of Kalamazoo; a brother, Brick (Becky) Lancaster of Atlanta, GA; a niece, Amy Lancaster of Atlanta, GA; a nephew, Marc (Sarah) Lancaster of Lorton, VA; and many beloved friends and cousins.
