He was born May 26, 1952 in Kalamazoo, the son of Harm and Alice (Thomas) Stoppelberg. Growing up in Kalamazoo's Oakwood neighborhood, Tom was a graduate of Loy Norrix High School in 1970, where he played football. He was a veteran of the United States Army for three years during the Vietnam Conflict, stationed in Scofield Barracks, Oahu, Hawaii. He served as a Sergeant in military intelligence. He learned to love Hawaii, but hate pineapple. After returning to Kalamazoo, Tom met and married his first wife, Linda Finley in 1976. He adopted her son, Thomas James "TJ". They later had a daughter, Michelle. They divorced in 2001. He graduated from Kalamazoo Valley Community College in 1995 with an Associate's Degree in Applied Science. Tom worked hard all his life at Fabrical, Burroughs and especially Kalamazoo Aeromotive, where he was Production Supervisor until his med! ical retirement in 2004. In 2002, he met Barbara Hopps and they married in 2004. They celebrated nearly six years of a happy, loving marriage. He helped her finish raising her three children, and loved them as his own. Tom enjoyed camping, the Lake Michigan beach for horseshoes, sun-sets, and walks to collect beach glass. He also enjoyed woodworking, NASCAR, University of Michigan Football and Marching Band. Most of all he loved his family dearly and taught many life lessons, but especially those about love and endurance. He leaves to cherish his memory, his wife, Barbara Hopps; his two children, Thomas James "TJ" (Holly) Stoppelberg, Michelle (Matt Dorbin) Stoppelberg-Dorbin, three step-children, Jeremy (Danielle) Bronson, Hilary Bronson, and Ariel Bronson; sister, Mary (Richard) Kirby; sister-in-law, Kathy (Tom Grace) Hopps; brothers-in-law, Gary (Maribeth) Hopps, and Rob (Delsa) Hopps; and many nieces and nephews. Preceding him in death were his parents, and an infant si! ster, Carol Louise Stoppelberg. Funeral services for Tom will be at 12 :00 PM on Wednesday at Oakwood Bible Church, 4100 Oakland Drive, Kalamazoo, with Pastor Stephen A. Johnson officiating. Friends may visit with the family on Tuesday from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM at Langeland Family Funeral Homes, Westside Chapel, 3926 S. 9th Street, and on Wednesday from 11:00 AM until the time of services at the church. Died March 21, 2010 at home. Mrs. Strand was born December 2, 1918 in Otsego, Michigan. She worked as a nurse for many years, most of the time in California. She was the former wife of Howard C. Strand of Marshall, Michigan. She is survived by many nieces and nephews in the local area. She was preceded in death by three brothers and two sisters, Fred Sherwood, Hank Sherwood, Jim Sabin, Beatrice Miller and Rosella Cunningham. At Mrs. Strand's request, she will be cremated and there will be no memorial services. Cremation of her body is handled by Avink Funeral Home Cremation Society, 129 S. Grand, Schoolcraft, Michigan. Her ashes will be interred at Riverside Cemetery in Kalamazoo. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Borgess Hospice in her name. Allamophi was born October 26, 1939 in Battle Creek, Michigan to the late R. J. Sutton and Lorraine (Sherrod) Sutton. He resided in Kalamazoo, Michigan, his entire life. He was baptized at Second Baptist Church on Walbridge Street as a youth; and he sang in the choir. Allamophi loved sports and was an avid University of Michigan fan. He ran in several marathons across the country and was well known in Kalamazoo as a runner. Allamophi could be seen running down S. Drake Road or other streets throughout Kalamazoo. Allamophi attended Kalamazoo Public Schools; he graduated from Kalamazoo Central High School in 1957. He enlisted in the U.S. Air Force March 12, 1958. He received an honorable discharge March 9, 1962. Allamophi attended Western Michigan University. He was employed by Upjohn-Pharmacia-Pfizer as a Chemist Assistant for over 30 years; he retired! in 2002. He was preceded in death by his parents, R.J. and Lorraine Sutton, sisters, Sarita Collins and Nellie Terry, brother, Kevin Sutton, and brother-in-law, George Collins. Allamophi leaves to cherish his memory one brother, Richard (Cynthia) Sutton of Orange, N.J.; three sisters, Sharon Powell, Colette (Edward) Woods, Vanessa Sutton, all of Lansing, MI; two aunts; a special nephew, Robert Terry of Kansas City, KS who was like a son; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Alva was born December 25, 1960 in Vicksburg, Michigan a son of Elvin and Judith (Rand) Switzer. He had been a lifelong Kalamazoo area resident and was a self employed contractor for over 20 years. Alva was a strong determined fighter of cancer until his illness made it impossible for him to do physical activities, still he never lost hope or courage while fighting for his life. He was passionate about cars and construction. He is survived by his daughter, Kascandra Baldwin of Kalamazoo; two grandchildren, Jadin and Novaley; his father, Elvin (Linda) Switzer of Sterling, OH; his mother, Judith Switzer of Kalamazoo; two sisters, Donna Leversee and Robin Switzer both of Portage; a brother, Elvin Brett Switzer of Tennessee; his former wife, Teresa Holt of Kalamazoo; and several aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was born in Coldwater, MI, January 28, 1942. Dave grew up on Wall Lake, Michigan, and attended Delton Kellogg High School, graduating in 1960 as Valedictorian of his class. He was offered a full scholarship and attended Kalamazoo College, receiving a Masters equivalent in Industrial Engineering/ Mechanical Engineering, and was honored as top Engineering graduate. While he was in college, he participated in a work-study program with Clark Equipment in Battle Creek, and was honored as the top student to ever participate. Upon graduation, Dave worked for General Motors as a production engineer, and then spent 15 years with Humphrey Products in Kalamazoo where he became Vice President for Manufacturing. After moving to the San Francisco Bay area in 1981, Dave held several positions with software startup companies: Qantel and a spin-off CIMS where he was VP for Operations; Relevant Business Systems in San! Ramon as Director of Education, Training and Documentation; and most recently with Rootstock Software Systems, Inc., where he was a principal in the company and has been instrumental in development of manufacturing software and training. Dave is survived by his wife, Julia Donahue Thayer, Aptos, CA; mother, Jeanette Schmidt, St. Cloud, Florida; sister, Valli Thayer McDougle, Denver, CO; sister, Jean Thayer Gemrich, Delton, MI; and brother, Tom Thayer, Chevy Chase, MD; son, David Dort (VA); four stepchildren and two granddaughters. He was born February 27, 1931 in Kalamazoo, the son of Peter and Nellie (Vroegindewey) VanDenBerg. On September 8, 1950, he was united in marriage to Anna Jean Napp in Kalamazoo. Peter worked as a carpenter for over 40 years, employed by Western Michigan University for 12 years, Miller-Davis Company for 16 years and self-employed for several years. He was a member of Second Christian Reformed Church. Surviving are his wife of 59 years, Anna VanDenBerg; their two children, Dennis (Janice) VanDenBerg of Kalamazoo, and Cynthia (Jeff) Beak of Mattawan; three grandchildren, Kristina VanDenBerg, Karen VanDenBerg, and Jaidan Beak; great grandson, Jared Hotrum; step-grandchildren, Jayna (Scott) VandenBerg, Karen (Mike) Bolle; and Steven (Sheri) Pott; seven step great grandchildren, Allison, Carlie, Josie, Emily, Maleah, Caiden, and Dominic; one sister, Arlene Cooper of Grand Rapids; and several niec! es, nephews, sisters, and brothers-in-law. She was the youngest of seven children born to Steven and Anna Walters, all of whom preceded her in death. Lucille married Peter Nicholas VanderWall on August 29, 1941, a strong and loving union until his death on December 26, 1988. She was also preceded in death by their son, William Richard VanderWall, daughter, LuAnn VanderWall, and granddaughter, Julene Lucille Burch. She is survived by her daughter, Margaret Burch of Des Plaines, IL and several nieces and nephews. Lucille is remembered as a faithful and gracious woman who always gave more than she ever asked for herself. She trusted her God, loved her husband, was proud of her children, and treated everyone she met with respect. Until her later years, Lucille was an active member of Third Christian Reformed Church and a volunteer at Kalamazoo Christian High School. Her sweetness made the world a ! little richer, and she is missed by all who knew her. A celebration of Lucille's life is planned for June. "Teco" Portage Passed away Tuesday, March 16, 2010, with family by his side, at his home where he lived with his wife, Marsha, grandson, Dakota Hall, and loyal dog, Missy. He was born on March 22, 1941, the son of the late Richard and Anna (Nuyen) Wuis. Ron was a genuine man, whose easy going spirit and fun-loving personality made him a joy to be around. He was a very recognizable man because of his height, and everyone knew when he walked into a room. He was a faithful and loyal husband, father, and friend, who always put others before himself. He was a hard worker who was employed by Consumers Power for 30 years. He was a selfless man who volunteered with the Comstock & Eastwood Firefighters. He was a Red Coat security guard at Wings Stadium, and was President of the Portage-Schoolcraft Eagles #3531 for many years. When not working or volunteering, he could be found doing yard work, rooting for his Detroit Lions, and Michigan Wolverines, or enjoying a moment spent with family and friends! over a cold beer. On September 11, 1987, he married his wife, Marsha (Lewis) Wuis who survives. Ron is also survived by four children, SMSgt Ronald (Ruth) Wuis Jr., Jody (Jeffrey) Bohnsack, Tammy (Tim) Fitzgerald, Thom Hall, David (Becky) Wuis; ten grand-children and one great-granddaughter, as well as many nieces, nephews, and great friends. Ron was preceded in death by a daughter, Becky Sue Wuis; and a grandson, Hunter Hall. In accordance with his wishes, cremation has taken place and there will be a tribute luncheon on Monday, March 22, 2010, at 5:30 PM at the Portage-Schoolcraft Eagles on Shaver Rd. She was born December 13, 1905 in Zanesville, OH the daughter of late James H. and Emily Claren (O'Bannon) Timmons. Emily graduated from Grand Rapids Junior College and Ward Belmont in Nashville, Tennessee. Before her marriage, Emily worked as a secretary at Westminster Presbyterian Church. After marriage, she and Ken eventually moved to Kalamazoo. In the 50's-60's she worked for Dr. William Scott in Kalamazoo. After their retirement, she and Ken moved to Venice, FL where they resided a number of years. After Ken's death, she moved to Friendship Village in Kalamazoo. She was a member of St. Luke's Episcopal Church in Kalamazoo. On November 9, 1929 in Grand Rapids, MI, Emily was united in marriage to J. Kenneth Wykkel who preceded her in death in 1982. She was also preceded in death by a brother, James R. Timmons; two sisters, Ann Himebaugh and Betty Hawley. Surviving are a! daughter, Sally Wykkel of San Francisco, CA; many nieces, nephews and great nieces and nephews. There will be no visitation as cremation has taken place. A graveside service will be held Monday, March 22, 2010, 11 AM at the Cascade Township Cemetery, Cascade, Michigan. Ronald Formerly of Kalamazoo Ron went to be with his Lord on Friday, March 12th, 2010 at the age of 78. He was born in Kalamazoo, Michigan where he lived until moving to Arizona in 1972. Ron was a U.S. Air Force Veteran and served in French Indo China (Vietnam), Korea and Japan. Ron worked in the food industry for most of his life. He loved times shared with his family, enjoyed traveling and exploring new places. He loved showing visitors the beauty of Arizona. While living in Michigan, he was a member of The Milwood Christian Reform Church, serving on the consistory as a Deacon. Ron's relationship with the Lord was a vital part of his life and he loved sharing his testimony of God's saving grace. He was a faithful member of Crossroads Nazarene Church here in Chandler, serving as an Usher for many years and was involved in the visitation ministry at various Care Centers as his health allowed. Ron is survived by his wife, Irvalene whom he met and married in 1979 after moving to Arizona. Also surviving ar! e his sons, Mark Alan and Michael Jay Wylie. Son, James Robert Wylie and his parents, Dorothy and Roy Wylie preceded him in death. Also surviving are step daughter, Darlene McGeary and step son, David (Deborah) McGeary. Ron was blessed with nine grandchildren, Brandy and Garret Wylie, Candice (Aaron) Gwin, Nicole and Lauren Wylie, Paul, Emily, Laura and William McGeary. Ron leaves five siblings all of the Kalamazoo area, Helen Adams, Roy (Barbara) Wylie, Gordon (Sandy) Wylie, Marsha Agema, Connie (Jim) Klok, and sister-in-law, Jackie Wylie. Of Schoolcraft Died March 16, 2010 at Borgess Pipp Hospital in Plainwell. Barbara was born August 18, 1927 in Kalamazoo, a daughter of Harold and Gladys Taft and had lived in Schoolcraft for the past 48 years. Prior to her retirement, she was employed in quality control, shipping and a relief operator for many years at Arco in Schoolcraft and later for Plastic Engineering, Inc. in Portage. Barbara was attending the Recast Church of Mattawan. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and aunt. She enjoyed driving, but especially enjoyed knitting dish cloths for her children and grandchildren. On April 7, 1948, she was married to Donald Yax, who survives. Also surviving are five children, Larry A. (Cherie) Yax of Portage, twin daughters, Patsy A. (Larry) Aldrich of Schoolcraft and Patty A. (Jack) Noel of Kalamazoo, Donald L. (Shelley) Yax of Marcellus and Terry A. (Laura) Yax of Lawton; 19 grandchildren; 28 great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews. She was prece! ded in death by several brothers and sisters. She resided in Venice, FL, with her husband, Stanley Tarala, married November 21, 1943. Stanley and Stephanie enjoyed having two homes together, one in Paw Paw, MI and one in Venice, FL. Their home in Michigan was Stephanie's favorite, where she loved the view of the lake and marveled over Stanley's lush gardening and handy work. Her most enjoyable memories were dancing with her partner, Stanley (which was a passion they both shared) and celebrations with her family. Playing cards and bingo with lifelong friends and family were also favorite past times. Stephanie will be sadly missed by all. She will be remembered as a beloved wife to Stanley Tarala of over 66 years; a caring, loving and supportive mother to Joe (Diana) Tarala, Martin (Mary) Tarala, Maryanne (Kevin) Fearer and daughter, Yvonne Tarala who preceded her in 1992. Thelma was married to Fred Shotwell in May of 1951 and had five children. She was preceded in death by her parents; two brothers, William Paul Craig and Ashley Boyd Craig; one sister, Wilma Craig; and two special sisters, Eulalia Henry and Lenora Stewart. After retirement, she worked with The Junior Girls Organization and as a Senior Companion through Senior Services. Mrs. Thelma Angelina Shotwell will surely be missed. Wayne Shafer was born in Chicago, Illinois, in 1937 to Leo and Alice Shafer. He uprooted to Kalamazoo, Michigan, in 1947, where as a member of a dysfunctional family, he and two brothers were taken in by the State of Michigan and raised in an orphanage called The Lake Farm Home for Boys. His sister and other brother went into foster care. Wayne lived on the Farm for almost eight years before he enlisted in the Navy at age seventeen. He married his wife, Barbara (Cent) on February 7, 1959. After working for a short time at Standard Oil, he was employed at Argonne National Laboratory and after some time there he realized that he could not move up the professional ladder without a college degree. At the urging of Dr. McKorkle, who had once been his supervisor at Argonne, and now was at Iowa State University, he moved his family to Ames, Iowa. He attended Iowa State University and in ! order to support his family, worked full time at the school's nuclear reactor. He graduated in 1972 with a Mechanical Engineering degree. He worked for Nipsco for a short time and then finished his career with the U.S. Government as Chief of Maintenance and Outages Section with the U.S. Federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission, Region 3 in Chicago, IL. After retiring, Wayne enjoyed hanging out with his buddies at Bronko's Restaurant. Wayne loved gardening and cooking with lots of colorful foods. He wrote a book, "Not Far From Home," which is registered with the Library of Congress. Memorials in Wayne's name may be given to St. Jude Children's Hospital, the American Diabetes Association or the Epilepsy Foundation. Portage Larry passed away at his home on March 22, 2010 with his loving family at his side, after a long battle with Hodgkin Lymphoma. He is survived by his wife, Cynthia whom he married on August 1, 1969; his sons, Michael, and Gregory (Andrea); two grandsons, Michael and Christopher, and two granddaughters, Skyler and McKenzie; his brother, Robert (Gloria); and Larry's Best Buddy, Kevin (Kathy) Drake. He was preceded in death by his father, Donald, and brother, Richard. Larry served in the Air Force as a Jet engine mechanic from Jan. 67 to Jan. 71. He was a very loving and caring husband and father, and was always there to help family and friends. He loved to play Golf with his sons, and buddy Kevin. He was employed at Beacon Tool, Inc. in Vicksburg for 28 years as a Tool Maker, and as General Manager till 2005. Then employed at Accu-Mold in Portage from March 2006 till Nov. 12, 2009 when he could no longer work. His wishes are to be Cremated, and there will be no visitation. In 1992 he retired as a chief maintenance man from the Vicksburg County Schools in Michigan after 12 years of service. He was a life member of the National Rifle Association.
