Grace was the fourth child of Mary May Davis and James A. Root. She was never able to get a copy of her birth certificate, Springport Twp, Jackson County, MI. Eventually her older brother signing an affidavit that he was ten years old and remembered when she was born was accepted by the State of MI so that they could give her a certificate to use for social security etc. Can anyone tell me what happened to the courthouse or at least to the records in the courthouse during the period of time between her birth in 1900 and her requeset for a certificate in 1950 that caused this loss of information?
