James Pierce is his older brother, about 25 in the 1850 census, born either in Pennsylvania or New York (the family lived right on the border and it is unclear where some of the children were born). He is single and supposedly a merchant at this time although he was also a miner (I note that Jackson county had a working mine around this time) and a farmer. Thanks for your help! Santa
