    1. [MIJackson] Searching for burial places of these ancestors, TAINTER & GODFREY, in Jackson County, MI 1845-1861
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Tainter, Godfrey, Hamilton, Jaycox, Harth, Horth, Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BGB.2ACI/418 Message Board Post: Hello, My great great grandparents lived in Jackson County, MI from about 1840-1861. Daniel Tainter married Polly Godfrey in Washtenaw County, Mi on May 29th, 1832. He was from Batavia, NY. By 1845 they are living in Jackson County, MI with their children. Daniel Tainter died on March 29th, 1846 in Jackson County, MI, but I do not know where he is buried. A son, Norton Tainter, died on Jan. 3rd, 1848. He was born on Dec. 12th, 1845. In 1850 Polly is listed as TINTER in the Tompkins, Jackson County, MI Census. In 1860, she is using name of Godfrey as are her children. Polly Godfrey Tainter died on Feb. 12, 1861 in Jackson County, MI. Her 2 daughters died in Jackson County, also: Mary Ann Tainter, born April 10, 1835, died Jan. 30th, 1870, never married. Died in Jackson County, MI. (Possibly lost suitor in Civil War.) Miriam Tainter, born Aug. 4th, 1837, died Jan. 8th, 1865, never married, possibly due to Civil War. There is a marriage in which Mary Ann or Miriam witnesed using the name Tainter in 1858, see below: Austin Hamilton, age 22 of Leslie and Sarah M. Horth age 19 of Tompkins on 27 December 1858 (place not recorded) by Harrison Dwight, J.P. Witnesses: Richard Godfrey and Marian Tainter. D-181 Marcus Jaycox, age 23 of Onondaga and Margarette Harth age 18 of Tompkins on 1 January 1856 (record dated at Tompkins) by L.L. Miles, J.P. Witnesses: Henry and Sophia Jaycox of Leslie. D-139. I was born in Lansing, but did not know ANY of this history until I was living in CA. The Jaycox family is also another relation. Daniel Augustus Tainter, son of Polly, b. 1839, married Alice Eliza Hull of Onondaga, MI & her brother, Cortez Hull married Henrietta Jaycox. After Daniel Augustus Tainter's mother died & the Civil War ended (he served in the MI Volunteers from 1861-1864), Daniel moved to Onondaga, Ingham County, MI then to Charlevoix County, MI. Where he lived the rest of his life. Another sister, Sarah Louisa Tainter, had married Nathan Gleason Fillmore Jefferds & moved to Leslie, MI. I would like to know where these Jackson County, MI ancestors are buried & what names they are buried under, i.e. Godfrey or Tainter/Taintor. I have not found them in the Michigan Gendis files and am curious. Does anyone know of them through their research in Jackson County, MI? Willing to share all history. I have family Bible of 1832 and photos. Sincerely, Marilyn

When I was looking for the same cemetery, I discovered they changed the name and noone at the Grass Lake office seemed to know that. It is now called East Cemetery. If you live near there it is relatively easy to find. It isn't too big. If I remember right, you need to call the Grass Lake TWP. office

Yours truly, and the owner of the www.albionmich.com and www.jacksonmich.com websites Maggie LaNoue, will be the featured speakers at the Tuesday, November 4 meeting of the Jackson County Genealogical Society. The meeting will be held at 7 p.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church, 925 Backus St., Jackson, Mi (517) 782-0543. We'll be featuring a "powerpoint" presentation about the aformentioned websites and how they have been, and can even more be a help to genealogists and historians. We'll give specific examples of how these sites have brought families together, even from across the globe. Post your genealogical questions on the guestbooks on either www.jacksonmich.com for Jackson County, or www.Albionmich.com for Calhoun County. 1. Re: [MIJackson] Question on West Cemetery transcriptions in Grass Lake
    2. Michelle Campbell
    3. Hi, I'm looking for the West Cemetery transcriptions for a burial in 1976. I would like to find my ancestor Mary (Campbell) Beck (d. April 4, 1976) and whoever else is buried in the family plot. I have reason to believe that her parent's, Henry and Mary J. Campbell are also buried in this cemetery. This would give me their death dates as well. I looked on line for the transcriptions, but only found the cemetery transcribed up to 1895 from a newspaper article. This is probably going to take a visit to the cemetery and a gander at the records to find the more recent burial records and such. Unfortunately, I live in Georgia, so it's not going to be me any time soon, lol. But I really appreciate your response.
