    1. [MIJackson] Porter Coal Mines and George Jennings
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Jennings Tracy Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BGB.2ACI/425 Message Board Post: After a long search I have finally found mention of the Porter Coal Mines in Jackson Co, Mich. My gg grandfather George JENNINGS was a constable in 1860 and a sheriff in 1870 in census records. Would like to know more about a possible strike by workers there between 1870 and 1874. The working coalminers gave George an inscribed gift which I have. I just wonder why he received it, did he have a financial interest in the mine or work there? George had 4 daughters Alice who I lose track of after 1860, Dora who married Newton MOORE Nov24, 1875, Rose Bell who married Robert C MILLS, and Blanche M who married C C GREER in Dallas Tex Sept 14,1887. Thanks Mike in Ks

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BGB.2ACI/422.1 Message Board Post: I did some research on the Gunns for you at the Jackson District Library. They are buried in Mount Evergreen Cemetary. Charles Gunn 1830-1909 and Estella Emmons Gunn 1822-1907. They were married July 3, 1865 in Jackson. Her mother, Susan Gunn, ran a boarding house in Jackson at which Charles lived according to the 1860 census. Susan is listed in the 3rd ward of Jackson City, dwelling 499. Their daughter, Cara, was married to Thomas Hart on Jan 1, 1874 in Jackson. Susan Emmons died in Nov, 1881. Her obituary that follows was in the Jackson Weekly Citizen on Nov. 15, 1881 on page 5: ANOTHER PIONEER GONE Mrs. Susan Emmons, whose daughter, Mrs. Ann Riley, was buried Thursday, was suddenly taken ill the same morning with paralysis of the heart, and died Friday morning at 10 o'clock, never recovering from the shock. Mrs. Emmons was 79 years old and was one of the oldest residents of this city, coming here from St. Lawrence county, New York, in 1834 when there were but two houses off from the little Main street of that burgh. She leaves four children, Jonathon II, and Robert E. Emmons, Mrs. Stella Gunn, and Mrs. Silas Hoyt, six grandchildren and one great-grandchild, the son of Mr. and Mrs. W.L. Lawson. A brother died a few months since and his widow, Mrs. Mary Haskins, is with the family, and she leaves one sister living in the West. As is well known, the entire family, of which she is the head, have always been highly respected by the entire community, and the survivors have the sympathy of all in their bereavement. It is fifteen years since Mrs. Emmons has been downstairs! from her residence, 129 and 131 E. Main Street, and most of that time she has been chair ridden by rheumatic affliction and confined to her room by excessive corpulence. She was a life-long consistent member of the Christian church and Rev. D. E. Millard officiated at the funeral which was held on Sunday. Hope this is helpful to your research.

    1. [MIJackson] 19th Century County Atlases
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BGB.2ACI/423 Message Board Post: HAR is introducing a brand new CD product: 1868 Atlas of the State of Ohio. The 68 page atlas has been scanned at 400 dpi and presented in high quality Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF). The viewing software, Acrobat Reader, is included on each CD. This is a departure from our indiana and Illinois Atlas CD's in that it is more like an e-book than a series of 19th century county maps. There is quite a bit of statistical data and text in this product including sections on: Agriculture, Canals, Climate Map, Climatology, Colleges, County Evolution, Land Grants of Ohio, Geological Map, Geology, History, Schools and Seminaries, Post Offices, Railways, Statistics and Surveys of Ohio. The Atlas contains multiple adjacent county maps that are useful for identifying 1868 transportation routes, railroads, canals and many early Ohio place names. The 25 city maps in the Atlas are much more detailed with many early government and industrial sites including: a variety of mills, cemeteries, churches, schools, asylums, fair grounds, race tracks, business locations, etc. This is an informative snapshot of mid 19th century Ohio and is recommended for anyone interested in undertaking historical or genealogical research of this period. A complete Table of Contents and examples taken from the Atlas can be viewed at the following link: 1868 Ohio Atlas web page: http://www.har-indy.com/oh_map/oh_index.html 1876 Indiana county maps: http://www.har-indy.com/in_map/in_index.html 1876 Illinois county maps: http://www.har-indy.com/il_map/il_index.html All are also available at our eBay store: http://www.stores.ebay.com/historicatlasseriesbyhar?refid=store Thanks for looking. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/BGB.2ACI/414.1 Message Board Post: I looked up Burnell Whiting at the Jackson library. His death record lists father as Alem Whiting and mother as Jessie Coe. I looked up his birth record. It says he was born on Aug. 4, 1880 which is different than you list. I checked the death records for the two parents. Jessie Whiting died soon after his birth on September 21, 1880 of "childbirth and fever". She was 19 years 11months and 3 days old. She was born in Michigan. Alem remarried to Stella Binn on March 2, 1882. An Alem Whiting died in 1940. I also found Alem in the census records at the library. His father was Chauncey Whiting and Mother was Nancy. The family is in Columbia township in 1850, then Liberty Township in 1860 and 1870. Chauncey died August 3, 1903. I hope this is of some help to you in your research.

Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/BGB.2ACI/420.1 Message Board Post: What's confusing is that some places around Jackson have Jackson mailing address's but aren't really in Jackson, MI. I had relatives living in Gillets Lake that is quite far from Jackson, but had a Jackson mailing address. Jackson has many small towns around it and Roseland Memorial Gardens 3744 Brooklyn Rd Jackson, MI 49203-4854 US phone (517) 764-0450 is not actually in Jackson. It is between the towns of Vandercook Lake and Napoleon. 127 goes around Jackson and right along side of Vandercook Lake, you turn off there to 50 which I believe is the same as Brooklyn Rd. It's a large cemetery and has an office there. You might want to phone ahead and get better directions and a copy of your grandmother's index card. It should have useful information on it, plus it will tell you her lot number. Carole Alden
