She was there with her family on the 1870 Census. Her daughter, Della Wood Smith, may have been living in Leslie at the time of her death in 1933, although she had been living in Lansing most of her life. I was wondering where she might be buried, and if any of Della's descendents were still in the Leslie area.

HISTORY OF JACKSON COUNTY, MICHIGAN By Inter-state Publishing Co., 1881 Reproduction by Unigraphic, Inc. 1401 North Fares Aen., Evansville, Ind. Printed 1978 A. C. CLARKE, farmer, Sec. 5, was born in Erie County, N. Y., July 29, 1816, son of Archibald S. and Chloe CLARKE, see nee THAYER. His father was a native of Massachusetts and mother, of Western N.Y. His father was a lawyer by occupation, and he was prominent among the early settlers of New York State, and at the time of his death was a representative in Congress. He died while home on business Nov. 3, 1821. The subject of this sketch received a common school education, enough to enable him to carry on any branch of business. His mother moved upon a farm in New York, where they lived until 1840. He, together with his mother and 2 brothers, came to Michigan, where they purchased a farm and carried on agriculture together for two years. He then bought out his brother’s interest in the farm and contined to carry on the same. He was married to Jemima LITCHFIELD, who was born in Chesterfield, Mass., Dec 17, 1813, and was the daughter of Ensign and Mary LITCHFIELD,! nee HADEN. They have 7 children, 5 of whom are now living: Augustus C., Reuben R. Emeline, Ellen Sophia, now Mrs. HYDE, and Ida, now Mrs. PRESTON. The deceased are Oscar L. and Eugene B. He has held the office of Constabel and has been Deputy Sheriff for over 30 years, and he was also town Treasurer. He now has 159 acres of land, which his two sons cultivate. In polics Mr. CLARK is and always has been a Democrat. Notes by Transcriber Lois (GRIFFES) KORTERING lekort (at) comcast.com: Regarding Ellen S. CLARK, her middle name was Sophia, and most people called her by her middle name. In one of the diaries of Leora’s grandfather, Jonathan Ensign “John” FRENCH, he wrote about an extended visit at “Uncle Gust and Aunt ‘Mima’s” house in Michigan. He also mentioned “Cousin Sophia” and ”Uncle Orson and Aunt Laura.” Some VAUGHAN families spelled their name VAUGHN. The middle name of George D. VAUGH(A)N was David , and he was known by his middle name. Laura M. married a third time to Columbus THURSTON. John FRENCH married Harriet Pauline VAUGHAN, who was usually called “Hattie” and sometimes, “Polly.” Hattie’s mother was Polly LITCHFIELD and John’s mother was Harriet LITCHFIELD. The two sisters were three and a half years apart in age. Jemima was born between Polly and Harriet, and Emeline was over four years younger than Harriet. Laura, my great-great-grandmother, was only a year and a half younger than Emeline. The two eldest LITCHFIELD sisters, Marvilla and Melenza, whose names were spelled thus in their youngest brother’s autobiography, were nine and seven years older than Polly, who was the eldest of the five younger daughters. The eldest son of Ensign and Mary/Molly (HAYDEN) LITCHFIELD was Simeon, and two boys, Levi and Elisha, were born between Melenza and Polly. The youngest and eleventh-born, Ensign Beals LITCHFIELD, who was a successful farmer, author, and lecturer on Spiritualism, had inherited the LITCHFIELD farm. Ensign was not fond of his first name, so he shortened his name for purposes of business to “B.E. LITCHFIELD,” When he began writing poetry and published his books, his name became “Beals E. LITCHFIELD.” In his last will and testament, Beals passed the LITCHFIELD farm on to John FRENC. Since Beals and his wife Lucinda (THATCHER) LITCHFIELD had raised John FRENCH from the time he was five years old, John was like a son to them. Notice that this second biological sketch of Augustus C. CLARK, published in 1881 and printed in 1978, has the earlier spelling (CLARKE)of the surname CLARK, as well as the earlier spelling (HADEN) of the surname HAYDEN. The maiden name of the wife of Archibald CLARKE and mother of Augustus is revealed as Chloe THAYER in this second biography.
