    2. Hi, After checking the 1850 census you probably are right that John and Sally were her parents and Clark her brother. In the 1850 census In Concord, Jackson, Michigan are; Dewey; Timothy age 55 b. 1794 in Vermont Sally 49 b. 1802 in New York Nelson 23 b. 1826 N.Y. Emily 21 b. N.Y. Salntha/Samantha 19 b. N.Y. Asa 18 b. N.Y. Harriet 14 b. N.Y. Orton 9 b. N.Y. Geroge 4 b. N.Y. and Horace 1 b. N.Y. I still can't find James and Amanda in the 1850's, it would be the year her child was born. Or her parents? 1. Re: [MIJackson] look ups please for Amanda and James Dewey family of Spring A...
    2. Hi, I did some quick checking around and have this; Amanda Gary married James Armstrong Dewey on 24 Oct 1849 in Spring Arbor, Jackson County Michigan. His Parents were; Timothy Dewey and Sally Flint, according to the LDS Amanda and James's children were; Carmi Dewey born 1850 in Spring Arbor, Jackson, Michigan and died in 1857. (Female) Phineas James Dewey born Jan 3, 1854 also in Spring Arbor Wilbur John Dewey born Mar 10, 1856, Spring Arbor Phineas married Julia Wolcot in 1875 in Spring Arbor Wilbur married Lura D. Wells on 8 Oct 1882 In the 1860 Census in Jackson Michigan James Dewey age 35 born in New York, Farmer Amanda age 35 born also in New York Phineas age 6 Wilbur age 4 also listed with them are; Dewey, John age 66? SAlly age 55 Clark age 21 They are listed also with the last name of Dewey, So I think they are his family and not her's ? John was also listed as blind. Also in the LDS are possible sisters of Amanda, married in the same town Phebe C. Gary married Charles Wing on Sept 21, 1841 and Lavonia Gary married Nathan C. Murray on July 4, 1849 I saw on LDS where James Armstrong Dewey last name was also listed as "Davy" I will check around more later and see what I can find. Cathy Obeshaw catobeshaw@aol.com

I don't know anything about Earl Spencer Harrington, but you are certainly right to wonder if he is named after a maternal last name. Ruth spencer married Nathan Eldred and they lived in Pownal, VT. Many families of my line with Spencers seemed to travel from Rhode Island to Pownal, Vt. to Otsego County, NY. I would check some of these locations' GenWeb sites.

Lyman has a land grant from the 1830's in Jackson County, and is the right age to be Lois's brother. Noel lives next door to Lois and husband Francis Bates in Leonidas County census 1850, as father to Lyman.

    3. Did you have any Smith's who moved to Michigan from Tyre or Junius (Seneca) New York? The county clerk has birth and death records from 1867. You can visit the genealogy section on Tuesdays & Thursdays from 10-2 (current hours). Volunteers are present, as I understand. County clerk address: Genealogy Dept. Jackson County Clerk 312 S. Jackson St. Jackson, MI 49201 You can get the phone number from a search on vitalrec.com or via the Jackson County webpage on Michigan genweb. At the local library main branch, they have some DAR/WPA books with old death records, land records, etc. indexed. Their catalogue is online. They also have a card file of the local paper, which includes some obits. I'm not sure how comprehensive it is. Their genealogy research room has other stuff as well. If your ancestors were farmers be sure to look at the 1858 and 1894 (?) atlases. They have line drawings of some farms. Jackson District Library 244 W. Michigan Ave. Jackson, MI 49201 If you have a death date, you might also send for a State of Michigan death record. They start 1867 too I think. They have a form online which you can send in for this. Good luck!
