I am trying to find out how and what records would show what country someone came from. My first family members, as far as I can determine show up in the 1870 census in Iosco County (East Tawas) to be exact, and the census shows they were French Canadians. Would naturalization records, death certificates or any other type of records from Iosco County show this information? >From your web site I also found the index information on St.Joseph's Cemetery where they are buried and wonder if those records would have this information possibly? Alfred and Eliza C. Noel were their names, and as I said before, came to East Tawas around 1866 or so. Their children Alfred and Blanch also lived and passed away while living in East Tawas. There son Alfred had four children, Grace, Nina and twin brothers Joseph and Stanley Noel. From what I have heard, the two boys played allot of baseball and were in the Herald paper quite often during the spring and summer months of 1925 thru 1929. Stanley Noel was my grandfather who married Alice Ostrander also from East Tawas back in 1930 but he passed away I think around 1962 when I was a child. As best as I can remember he was good friends with a Hall of Fame ballplayer Hazen (Ki-Ki) Cuyler from Alcona County back in the 1920's and 1930's. I don't have but a few family members left and the information is very scarce anymore. I am just beginning a family tree and found the Iosco MI GEN WEB Site totally fantastic from both the county and state levels. Just want to say thanks in advance if anyone can help, and also a big thank you to all the volunteers and people involved in making this web site so fantastic.
Hi: My first recommendation is to belong to the surname group to see if anyone else is researching the same name: SurnameForum@yahoogroups.com Second, would be if possible, be part of Ancestry.com. There are other great sites also. If you haven't already check out the Mormon site www.familysearch.org Third, check out: www.cyndislist.com Don't know what genealogy program you are using. If you don't have one of the new Family Tree Maker programs that offers 6 months to 1 year free to Ancestry.com that is a good investment. I got mine off EBay and I LOVE it. Also, check out the Huron Genealogy Society. I have one of their discs I also got off EBay that you can look for family also from Iosco county area. If I can be of help any more I will try.
