    1. [MIIOSCO] Morse, Bonker, and Grant Families in Iosco County
    2. joann geybels
    3. Does anyone have information on the family of Mary E. Gibbs Morse Grant (b. about 1836 in Vermont; d. 1883 in Indianfields Township, Tuscola County, Michigan)? She was the daughter of Melvin and Mary Gibbs of Howard Township, Steuben County, New York. Melvin Gibbs, his second wife Clarissa Crowell, and the Gibbs children moved to Indianfields Township in about 1855, and in 1856 Mary married Harvey Morse (b. March 6, 1827 in Yates County, New York; d. August 7, 1869 in Indianfields Township, Tuscola County, Michigan). After Harvey Morse's death, Mary Gibbs remarried to James A. Grant on April 17, 1871 in Tuscola County, Michigan. In the 1880 Census Mary [A.] Grant was living in Tawas, Iosco County, Michigan with her sons Melvin Morse and Albert Morse (listed as Melvin Grant and Albert Grant) next door to her daughter Almira Morse Bonker. Mary's husband James A. Grant is not listed with her. The only record I have ever found of him is his marriage record. I am looking for information on Mary E.Gibbs Morse Grant's children. 1) Marvin Morse (b. about 1857 in New York). 2) Almira Viola Morse (b. about 1856 in New York). She married William Bonker on October 14, 1871 in Tuscola County, Michigan, and they lived in Tawas City, Iosco County, Michigan. However, after the 1880 Census (in which their name was spelled "Banker") I find no trace of them. They had at least three children. The first was Minnie E. Bonker (b. about 1873 in Michigan). The second was Mary Bonker (b. about 1876 in Michigan). The third was William Bonker (b. March 15, 1879 in Tawas City, Iosco County, Michigan). He married Mart Freer on September 24, 1901 in Alpena, Alpena County, Michigan. 3) Melvin G. Morse (b. about 1860 in New York). He married Flora E. Hunt on October 3, 1881 in Iosco County, Michigan. They had at least two children: Winnie Morse (b. 1881; d. December 10, 1885 in Iosco County, Michigan, and Nellie Morse (b. October 1883 in Tawas City, Iosco County, Michigan). 4) Albert Morse (b. about 1863 in Michigan) 5) Hattie Morse (b. 1868 in Indianfields Township, Tuscola County, Michigan; d. August 9, 1869 in Indianfields Township, Tuscola County, Michigan). Of course, I would be very interested in information on Mary E. Gibbs's second husband James A. Grant. Any help with this family would be greatly appreciated. Thank you in advance. Joann Osgerby Geybels j.geybels@skynet.be

    3. Bonnie: Thanks for offering, I appreciate it. My family surname is the Gauthier family. Mainly Leonidas Gauthier, Jr. & Sr. and the last generation of this family that I can find is Alfred Gauthier born 1837 in Derchambault. He was married to Mary J. Dale & Annie Doyle. They all came over to East Tawas and died in the general vicinity. I really don't have marriage info and I think most of the families were buried in St. Joseph's Cemetery. Or at least Leonidas, Sr. was. Some of their families I don't have alot of info on from especially Alfred. If you do find info let me know. Or if you need more info let me know. Do you use Family Tree Maker 2006? And have subscription to Ancestry.com? Let me know what you need and I'll try to help also. 2. Mike Noel
    3. I am trying to find out how and what records would show what country someone came from. My first family members, as far as I can determine show up in the 1870 census in Iosco County (East Tawas) to be exact, and the census shows they were French Canadians. Would naturalization records, death certificates or any other type of records from Iosco County show this information? >From your web site I also found the index information on St.Joseph's Cemetery where they are buried and wonder if those records would have this information possibly? Alfred and Eliza C. Noel were their names, and as I said before, came to East Tawas around 1866 or so. Their children Alfred and Blanch also lived and passed away while living in East Tawas. There son Alfred had four children, Grace, Nina and twin brothers Joseph and Stanley Noel. From what I have heard, the two boys played allot of baseball and were in the Herald paper quite often during the spring and summer months of 1925 thru 1929. Stanley Noel was my grandfather who married Alice Ostrander also from East Tawas back in 1930 but he passed away I think around 1962 when I was a child. As best as I can remember he was good friends with a Hall of Fame ballplayer Hazen (Ki-Ki) Cuyler from Alcona County back in the 1920's and 1930's. I don't have but a few family members left and the information is very scarce anymore. I am just beginning a family tree and found the Iosco MI GEN WEB Site totally fantastic from both the county and state levels. Just want to say thanks in advance if anyone can help, and also a big thank you to all the volunteers and people involved in making this web site so fantastic.

    1. Update: New Alpena County History and Genealogy Site
    2. Greetings again, We are going to be adding 2 new pages to the site shortly. One will be a Family Links page for anyone to add a link to their family site. The only criteria for this page is that a portion of the website must have a family connection to Alpena County. The other page will be a Surname page for family names connected to Alpena County. The Surname page will allow you to post your Alpena Surnames on the website. When someone clicks on one of your surnames they will be able to send you an e-mail about your surname. You might find a connection by posting your surname on the site. To participate, just reply to this e-mail and provide your name, your surnames you want posted on the site or your website you want a link to. Thanks Myra Herron, Site Coordinator Scott Grinder, Administrator/Webmaster
