IONIA COUNTY GENEALOGICAL SOCIETY - Monthly Meeting WHEN: Saturday, August 9, 2014, at 1:00 p.m. WHERE: Lakeside Cemetery on M-50 east of Lake Odessa, MI Refreshments afterward at Freight Station Museum, 1117 Emerson St., Lake Odessa, MI (directly behind the Lake Odessa Area Historical Society Depot Museum) TOPIC: "The "Do's and Don't's of Headstone Cleaning and Photography"--Liz Wright from Williamston PLEASE NOTE: This will be a hands-on program and will take place at the Lakeside Cemetery along M-50 east of Lake Odessa--look for our balloons. Refreshments will be served afterward at the Freight Station Depot. We hope to see you there! The ICGS Resource Room will also be open until 5:00 p.m. Future Speakers: Sept 13: "Gram & Gramps were from Canada eh?"--Diane Oslund from Detroit, MI, will point out what is available to the genealogist researching these distant shores. Especially emphasizes resources for the province of Ontario. Oct 11: "The Good, the Bad, the Deviant: Researching Correctional Records"--Jill Arnold, from the Archives of Michigan in Lansing, will help researchers navigate those records held by the Archives of Michigan to uncover information about past misdeeds, including how to get started, and using prison records to find even more genealogy resources. Reminders: First Families--NEW DEADLINE--August 15: If you are a direct descendant of an individual who was in Ionia County by December 31, 1880, you can qualify to join First Families of Ionia County Society. If your ancestor was here 100 years ago, you can qualify for the Centennial Certificate. And plan to join us for the First Families Banquet in October. The application is available online here: <> Ionia County Vietnam War Veteran's Book: Bonnie Jackson, a member of the ICGS, is currently working on a book compilation of Ionia County Vietnam War veterans who served anytime, anywhere during the Vietnam War era. If a veteran has lived in Ionia County at any time during their life, they are eligible for inclusion in the book. Submission forms are available at the Lake Odessa Museum, or by calling the message line at (616) 374-8455.
