    3. Carol, I have written to the Ionia County Clerk's office for copies of marriage records and death certificates. They have records dating back to 1867. They have been charging a nominal fee ($1) for uncertified copies. Birth certificates are $10 and must be over 110 years old or some restrictions apply. Sue B. is the person I have been corresponding with at the Ionia County Clerk's office. The address is 100 Main Street, Ionia, MI 48846, phone 616-527-5380, fax 616-527-5380. I have found it is quicker and less expensive in most cases to correspond with the county clerk's office instead of the state vital records. Michigan has a County Clerk's Directory on the internet. For Ionia County try http://www.sos.state.mi.us/history/archives/county/ionia.html you may access other counties from there. Good luck, Nona ----- Original Message ----- From: "Jan & Glenn" <cristian@netonecom.net> To: <MIIONIA-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Tuesday, July 17, 2001 5:41 PM Subject: Fw: lookup > Can anyone help this person? 1. Just some genealogy humor
    2. While on a recent excursion to the Burton Historical Collection at the Detroit Public Library, I ran across this gem... An Ionia man said that he recently started to climb his family tree until he ran into an Indian and a circus performer when he came down again and decided to do no more delving into the past. Ionia Sentinel-Standard Monday, April 22, 1935 edition, page three, under "City and Country". You never know what rich, exciting, and perhaps embarrassing history awaits the student of the past...but what an enjoyable journey! Valerie (Stoddard) Curren ValerieCurren@aol.com

    1. Fw: Mitchel info needed
    2. Jan & Glenn
    3. ----- Original Message ----- From: Marg Deans Hi, My name is Marg Deans and I'm the volunteer co-ordinator of our local archives here in Paris, Ontario. I'm researching the Mitchell family. Charles Mitchel and his wife, Betsey Drake, came to Paris about 1840. Betsey was born in LeRoy NY and they were married in LeRoy in 1836. They were both born in 1806. (birthplace of Charles, unknown expect US and family had numerous ties with NY. Charles MAY have been born in Tioga, NY) Charles had a brother Hiram Mitchel (yes, only one "L" in Mitchel) who lived in Ionia, Michigan. I am hoping to locate an obituary for Hiram, hoping that it will contain a reference to his parents. Charles was a wagon and carriage maker - very successful - and built one of our famous cobblestone houses. There was also another brother, James E. Mitchel who also lived in Paris - but unfortunately neither obituaries referenced their parents. Any help you could provide would be very much appreciated. Please let me know if there are any costs involved. By the way, couldn't help but notice a similarity between our towns - a river goes through the centre of Paris - the Grand River. Best regards, Marg

    3. I want to let everyone know that there is a new virus going around and it was sent to me but i did not open it. It is attached as BNFGIMBN.EXE 21.0 KB. It is called the WIN32.Hybris Virus. I have sent it back to the sender and warned them they have a virus. it was sent to my main email here and Not many have the email address. I didn't check to see what it will do to a computer but to me a virus/worm is just that and will cause problems anyway it goes. Please all be aware of this Elizabeth aka ShatsDreams Liz

    2. Judy L Beard
    3. Hello, just thought I would share this. I know in the past there has been discussion of "slow" or nonexistent responses from the NARA when requesting pension files. On Mar 21, 2001 I sent a Fm 85 to the NARA. Over the weekend I sent them an email requesting a status. Today I got a PHONE CALL advising me it is process and should be rec'd in about 30 days. In the past I authorized them to charge my Visa and had a response in less than 90 days. Did the same with this one. PS the charge is not yet on my card. Judy judbear2@mediaone.net

    3. The cemetery at Riverside is still there and yes, the inmates keep it mowed. I have been there several times. It is in the back of the prison, near the maintenance shop. You have to stop at the main prison and ask for permission to go back there (or else, one of the tower guards might take a shot at you) :-) I have asked numerous times, and no one seems to know if and where there might be records. I did some research for a person whose ancestor died while at the prison, when it was the State Institution for mentally ill. When I actually got as far as seeing his death record, it seems the body was given to the medical director of the facility for "research". I wanted to see if his remains had been placed in that little cemetery after the research was completed. I did not find any names on any of the markers.
