    1. Ionia City Photo studios, late 1800s
    2. F Eric Roberts
    3. Can anyone help me, please, with Ionia City photographers of the late 1800s? I have some photos of a relative (George Watson HULL) who died in 1898 aged about 63. There are two, of him & his wife, which have the photographer's name: Merell, of Ionia, Michigan From the man's apparent age of around 60, I think it could have been taken around 1895-ish. Does anyone have the dates when this studio was operating. I suppose there's no chance that his records have survived!? I also have another group photo of his family, taken at least 10-15 years earlier, but the photographer's name is missing. So it might or might not be the same. Many thanks in advance. (Any answers would also be welcomed by Joanne Harvey, who is researching G W HULL for me.) Eric Roberts Cirencester, Gloucestershire, England

I hate taking them out of albums and taking them to stores to get them copied.... also.. they aren't always too willing to have you take their things for fear of not getting them back. sometimes.. although they are willing to share these precious things.. there has to be something.. can someone please enlighten me.. 1. A note
    2. Recently while I was working on my Sayles family.. I went threw a bunch of old notes to put into my computer program.. I had lost everything on my computer a while back.. and thinking since I know back up is important.. I had nothing to worry about because I do and did back up all my information... Well surprize.... my backup somehow got messed up too .. so needless to say... I wanted to cry.. 5 years of work.. down the tubes.. I had nothing on my computer anymore.. starting from scratch...Well lucky for me.. I keep everything.. even little notes that mostly don't mean anything to me when I look back on them.. but i won't throw them away.. because I know there was a reason I wrote the notes... Well since I lost everything... I decided to go threw all of these miles of paper work.. and also try to organize....( another one of my bad points.).... In the begining of my research 5 years ago.. I didn't know what I was doing.. of course .. it was new to me... but I copied or wrote any and all info that I found on any of my research names.. Not knowing if they connected or not... but I kept it all... well this past couple of weeks.. I have been going threw all these papers.. and have found that tons of info that i disregarded in the beginning.. now have major connections to me...like the fact that for a short time.. my grandfather was a fireman in Detroit... and many many addresses that I now realize after talking to so many relatives.. were actually addresses that my grandparents had lived... complete addresses....and many many more things.. about great aunts and uncles who i didn't realize were great aunts and uncles at the time... It was amazining some of the info I had stashed away in drawers and piles . My point being.. even if it doesn't connect today... keep it... (I know so much paper work and so little places to keep it... ) but somewhere down the line.. 2 or 5 or 10 years it might just be very important to you.... Happy Hunting... 3. Thought this was interesting.......Teresa ----- Original Message ----- From: <KevinOBrien8527@aol.com> To: <MIEATON-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Sunday, September 23, 2001 10:10 PM Subject: E-Mail Address Collection Scam Remedy Dear Fellow Researchers: By now many of you have heard of the scam going around by which many of us have willingly joined a "research list," only to find out it was a scam. For those who have not seen it yet, the most recent posting invites researchers to join a "new county list" to which they will be "ADDING ONE BILLION NAMES SOON." All it does is take your e-mail information, place a cookie and a directory key onto your computer's hard drive and then when you try to access the site it claims to be "overloaded" and currently undergoing service. The software placed on your hard drive allow the viewers to track your Internet usage. They create a profile and sell the information to companies who believe the information is being collected ethically. Your reward of course is to get your E-mail box loaded up with "SPAM" AND IF YOU BY CHANCE HAVE A PROFESSIONAL PROFILE ATTACHED TO YOUR E-MAIL AND WEB SURFING PROPERTIES, THEY CAN EVEN TAKE YOUR NAME, ADDRESS AND OTHER PERSONAL INFORMATION WHICH THEY SELL TO DIRECT MAILER AND TELEPHONE SOLICITOR COMPANIES. This is the truest order of "CAVEAT EMPTOR" (Let the customer beware). If you have been had already, I received this link from PATRICIA HAMP the GRATIOT COUNTY, MICHIGAN, ROOTSWEB coordinator. I downloaded software from this site: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/downloads.html and activated it. I was stunned to see 61 "spy" type software entries in my computer that I never knew existed. I also located the one that was secretly placed by the "one billion names" scam. By the way, I was had on the Kings County, Washington and Jefferson County, New York lists. Please take this information in the spirit it was intended and protect yourselves. These scumbags are taking advantage of us because we are desperately seeking information on our ancestors and occasionally we reach the point of desperation. I'm glad Pat Hamp shared the information with me. I hope all of you are. Please do not forward this to other lists. Let the individual list coordinators make those decisions. Best wishes for continued success in your research!
