Dear Sally, Thank you for your concern. I realize that there is a problem there, but unfortunately, our society does not have a better solution. We do not have the facility to house delicate items such as these. The Archives of Michigan do, but I do not know if the Register of Deeds Office would consider it. I would like to recommend that you address these concerns to Diane at the, Register of Deeds in Ionia. She is the person who has the control over these items and the right to give them to the Archives. The Archives facility is climate controlled and fire safe. That is my recomendation. Thanks again for taking the time to express your concerns. Dear Pam, Is this the same Mary Griffes who lives in Williamston and is the head of the Lansing FHC. If so, she is the mother of one of my best friends. I am always going that way. It would be no problem. Hi Dennis, I have a copy of the 1891 Ionia and Montcalm Counties book. Let me know what page you need. Mine is not in the best of condition, but I think it is complete. Greetings , I too very much appreciate my new copy of The History of Ionia and Montcalm Counties 1881. I do have a slight Dilemma though, the Biography that I thought was in this book is not. I now know that it is in the 1891 version . Does anyone know where there is a good copy of this book ( The History of Ionia County 1891 )? The Library of Michigan has it on Microfilm, but, the page that I want was damaged before it was converted ( scanned ) and it does not print out very well. I can't find this actual Book on the shelf. Might there be a copy in the Genealogical Societie's Depot or in the Ionia Library? Any ideas would be welcome. Thank you. Dennis C.

eBay has a picture of a girl holding an Portland, Michigan pendant. The picture is suppose to be of Rose Sulpigio. For those with an interest, it may be worth a look. It would be nice to see the photo with a family member. On eBay just search for Portland, Michigan/MI.
The book is $52 while supplies last and may be purchased by sending payment to Ionia County Genealogical Society 13051 Ainsworth Road Route 3 Lake Odessa, MI 48849-9406 It is a beautiful book and a valuable resource tool for Ionia and Montcalm Counties. Pam Swiler, President Ionia County Genealogical Society
If you have never attended a large genealogy conference, this would be a beautiful one to start with. It is being held at Toledo, Ohio. Check out the web site: www.ogs.org for further information.
I want to publicly thank the Ionia County Genealogical Society for the recent reprint of the "History of Ionia and Montcalm Counties, Michigan," by John S. Schenck, 1881. I had scanned through the book briefly a few years ago at the Library of Michigan, but was able to go through it section by section at my leisure this weekend and found some information about my relatives that I had never seen before. None of my family was featured in lengthy biographies--the information about them appeared in township information. I think it is really great that the society has provided this service and made the publication affordable enough for me to have my own copy. Deb Eddy Charlotte, MI
I am new to the list and need help. Does anyone on the list have information about Emra B. Brooks and family? My family members reports that he moved to Ionia Co. about 1925 from Cowley Co., Kansas with his wife, name unknown, and children Wendell, Waldo and Evelyn. He was living in Ionia County when his mother died in 1944 in Ks. I find 3 Brooks surnames that are buried in the Balcom Cemetery. They are: Emma Brooks d 9/11/1953 age 84; Brooks, Emma or Emra d 1958(no exact date given) and Brooks, Mildred d 7/27/1966 age 83. There is a divorce record for a Joyce & Wendell Brooks filed in 1960 case #11789 in Ionia Co. I posses the obit for Waldo Brooks who died in 1976 in Haslett, MI but no mention about his parents although it gives information about his brother Wendell and sister Evelyn. What is the procedure to locate these obituaries, death records, etc in the area? Thanks for any help in advance. Ralph Biddle from OK
I know we all want to do our genealogy - but I need to familiarize those new to the lists with what our policies are. Please have patience with me. Some of you know me as I have been the list administrator for several years. Others do not - as I have just taken over a couple of the lists in the last few months. My name is Jan Cortez and I have been doing genealogy websites and mailing lists for a couple of years now. I actually like to be very informal and not bother you in any way. As long as the lists are moving along and everyone is getting along - I'm happy - but there are some who wish to stick to topic. they are right - that is what the lists are for. The specific topic that they were started for. So here are the rules: 1. Topic needs to be genealogy and history specific to whichever county, state or country list that you are subbed to. If you feel the need to bring other things to the attention of the list - PLEASE clear them with me. 2. Please do not send virus warnings - unless they have been cleared with me. Many of them are hoaxes, getting people to delete needed files from their computers. Many members are new - and haven't experienced these types of mails yet. 3. Chain letters are not allowed. 4. No spamming, flaming, or swearing is allowed. Please try to always be considerate of others feeling. Treat others as you would want to be treated. Many people are newbies to the list and haven't been around forever like some of us. Try to remember back to when you first started and how awesome this all was. 5. Try not to have real lengthy discussions on the list - if you want to pursue the subject matter - try to take it off list. Its only being polite to those that are not interested in the thread. 6. ROLL CALLS will only be called by the List Administrator. I have quite a few lists and some are VERY large. Many going at the same time jam my mailbox big time. If I have become forgetful - send me a note and ask. 7. If you have a complaint against anyone who has posted to the list or their subject matter, please take that up with me - off list. If you don't have my email addy - send a simple note to the list asking for the List administrator to contact you. I will - as soon as I can. I do work though - so give me some time. 8. To unsubscribe to the list send a message to (X's being the name of your specific list) XXXXX-L-request@rootsweb.com with the word unsubscribe in the body of the message. Nothing else. To resub - you follow the same action only using subscribe in the body of the message. the same address using a "D" instead of an "L" if you are in digest form. 9. Problems adhering to these rules will result in a note from me to you personally - trying to resolve the matter. If after honest attempts have been made on both sides and the matter is not resolved - it may result in unsubbing you from the list. So lets try our best to get along. 10. Try to put surnames in the Subject line - and try to give time frames and areas. It really does help... 11. Best rule of them all - Enjoy the list - And post often it gets your message out. Jan Cortez List Administrator
try IRISH-MI-L-request@rootsweb.com place subscribe in subject field "I can trace my ancestry back to a protoplasmal primordial atomic globule. Consequently, my family pride is something inconceivable." ~ WS Gilbert, The Mikado
If anyone has Irish Ancestors who migrated to the state of MICHIGAN there is a new list to discuss this area of research. To subscribe send an email to IRISH-MI-L-request@rootsweb.com that contains the word subscribe If you prefer the digest format the address is: IRISH-MI-D-request@rootsweb.com Do join us if this is an area you would be interested in.
