    1. [MIINGHAM] Nathaniel and Jonathan Swarthout in Ingham C. 1862-1864
    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Surnames: Swarthout, Rice, Treat Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hFB.2ACE/990 Message Board Post: Here's a post on two Swarthouts who moved from Washtenaw Co to Ingham Co (Dansville village and Bunker Hill twp) to Clinton Co: I have extensive Michigan records, including land records, on a Nathaniel Swarthout b 1807-1810 in NY, d after 1863, last seen in MI. He married 1) unknown and 2) Lucinda Treat, whose first husband was William Rice. Lucinda is the dau of Ashbel Treat and Sarah Bell of the Throopville, Cayuga Co, NY Treats (big family, well documented). Nathaniel was probably the son of Jacob Swarthout (b abt 1780, probably died before 1860 in NY) and Sally (b 1778-1790, died after 1860 in MI), with whom he was living in Mentz in 1850. In 1860, Nathaniel is in Sylvan, Washtenaw Co, MI and his mother is with him but his father is not. Between 1862 and 1863, Nathaniel and Lucinda bought and sold land in neighboring Ingham Co and then moved to Ovid, Clinton Co, MI which is where I've always known Lucinda's son Alfred Smith Rice to be living. What's interesting is, Nathaniel and Lucinda exchanged land several times with a Jonathan Swarthout, wife Caroline, who also moved to Ovid, Clinton Co, MI to what I believe is a neighboring plot to Nathaniel's. I need to check the Clinton Co records in July. I know (from family records) that Lucinda died Jan 6 1864. But I do not have a death date for Nathaniel, and I've no idea who Jonathan is. I typed up a huge file of source records and conclusions supporting all this, let me know if you'd like to see a copy of it. I'd love to find out how Nathaniel and Jonathan fit into the NY Swarthouts. Also, when they moved to Ovid, they moved next door to Elkanah Swarthout (Oct 1816 -30 Apr 1875), whose daughter married Nathaniel's step-son. Elkanah's parents are listed as Jacob and Sarah Swarthout on his death certificate. Elkanah may have had a brother William who moved with him from Huron, Wayne Co, NY to Ovid, Clinton Co, MI. Any information you can provide on all of this would be greatly appreciated!
