Mainly, why do you think your grandfather is a son (or grandson) of Okemos. When was your grandfather born? All the children that I know of Chief Okemos I can account for. Thanks, Jim.

    2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hFB.2ACE/564.1.1.1 Message Board Post: I believe that Chief Okemos had visited one Hiram Haynes of Williamston, MI. They knew each other. Hiram was friendly to the Chippewas who camped close to his home. He took them food in the winter. I believe that Hiram found a child/baby and wanted to raise the child, as he had lost several children of his own, but his wife Sarah did not want him(perhaps due to the time(1877, the year after Little Big Horn, or perhaps some other reason.) They divorced in 1878 and Hiram married a lady named Clara. My grandfather was raised by Morris Haynes and Mary Geer/Gear/Greer(on the birth and death certs, it is spelled Geer). Morris was a possible relative of Hiram. Hiram had a son named Morris. I am trying to find the names of Harry Haynes's biological parents(which is probably impossible). My grandfather met my grandmother, Myrtle Rose Keeney around 1903-1905, in Chesapeake, Ohio. I don't know why he went to Ohio then, but he and Myrtle had two children, Faye(1905) and my mother, Carol C.(1907). He did not know about my mother, as he had left Ohio before then. He was supposedly driven off by my great aunt, Annie Belle Keeney, at least that is what she told my mother when we went to see her when she was very old. My mother never knew her father. I have done a lot of research trying to find my grandfather's Indian heritage. According to my research, Chief Okemos had children and it just seems logical that my grandfather COULD be one of them or a grandchild. Maybe I am completely off track but my reasearch seems to point in that direction. Native American geneaology is very difficult. Any information would be useful. Hiram had taken a trip to Calf. He ma! y have met Clara's father there. Incidently, my grandfather, Harry J. Haynes is buried in St. Petersburg, Fl. He has no grave marker. His birth place is listed as Fenton, Mich. He was raised in Clio, and later lived with his mother, Sarah, in Detroit. He came to Fl. around 1945, I believe, and was married twice before he died in 1966. In his obituary, my grandmother was never mentioned, nor did she ever talk about him. She did carry his name but I have never found any record of their marriage, (at least not yet). I haven't done much research lately as I have had other priorities). In the 1910 census of Chesapeake, Ohio, Myrtle and her children were living with her parents, Lorenzo and LeahAnn Keeney. She was listed as a Widow! Probably to save face and embarassment. If you need any more details, please just E-mail me directly. Thank you and God bless you.

I have ancestors that traveled this same path, and I am trying to find out the connection. The town of Willoughby in Lake County, Ohio, is said to have been named for a doctor in Herkimer, NY, where my Hoffman ancestors originated (at least as far back as I can go). This same Hoffman family found its way to Holt from Ohio, and I've noticed Willoughby road in Holt and have now begun to find that persons of that surname have lived in Holt also. Anyone know of a connection between the Willoughby's of Herkimer, NY, and Holt, MI?

    3. Hi Joan, You can find Michigan cemetery tombstone pics at http://www.rootsweb.com/~cemetery/michigan/mitstable.htm. Lansing is Ingham county. Also, the Lansing (Ingham) Municipal Cemetery's office number is 517-483- 4303. They handle the Mt. Hope, Evergreen and North cemeteries. You could call and see if they have any info. I voluntarily take pics out at those cemeteries and submit them to the Michigan Tombstone Project. If you find out he is located at one of these cemeteries I can get you a picture if you tell me the location. Hope this info helps. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hFB.2ACE/1721.1 Message Board Post: The info on the certificate comes from ledger books - so what you got is what is in the book. Back in 1885, there were few, if any, standards as to what information would have been entered. I have never seen one (and have been through Ingham County's books looking for my ancestors) that gave more than parents' names and township they lived in. I suppose for a very recent immigrant to the area, they might say where they were from. Marriage records from then were not much better, though those give ages. Your next option is to look for church records - baptism, etc. A death certificate, being more recent, might be helpful, although the information on that comes from whoever reported - often a relative - and is only as accurate as they knew or were willing to tell. Also, newspapers of the time and place - the State Library in Lansing has a lot on microfilm. Look for wills of relatives that might mention your great-grandmother. That is what makes genealogy so frustrating - and interesting. You have to piece it together.

Surnames: Duffy Classification: Birth Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/hFB.2ACE/1721 Message Board Post: Does anyone know what information, if any, was asked on original birth certificates in the 1880's? Addresses, parents ages, employment? I recently requested a copy of a birth certificate for my great grandmother. She was born in Bunker Hill on 03 Jan 1885. I knew her name, Mary C Duffy, and when and where she was born. I also knew her parents names. When I received the certified copy of her birth certificate I was dismayed to find it only contained the information that I had already provided. Why did my copy not contain more information? At the very least, I would think the persons full name at birth would be put on the copy of the birth certificate. For instance, my g grandmother...I know her name to be Mary C Duffy. But what does that "C" stand for? Surely her original birth certificate did not read Mary "C" Duffy. Any feedback is appreciated. Thanks, Cathy
