    1. [MIINGHAM] CHILDS, John H.
    2. Sally J. Holcombe
    3. This is an update on information that I've sent to this list. I'm hoping to learn more about my g-g-grandfather, John H. CHILD(S). I'd also like to find others who are researching this CHILD(S) family. By the way, our family has always added the "S" to the name; but I have seen him in several records as "John H. CHILD." This is what I have: 1. On a U.S. Govt. land grant, 1839, Alaeidon TWP, Ingham Co., MI, he is listed as being from "Seneca Co., New York." 2. He was an original settler of Alaeidon township. The land that he once owned was 80 acres in the southeast 1/4 of Section 30, Alaiedon TWP. The property is currently bounded on two sides by Hagadorn Rd. and Harper Rd; and shows a Conrail easement. 3. John H. CHILD(S) was b. in NY, 1811. At this time, his burial place in Ingham Co., MI isn't verified; but he d. 29 Nov 1879, Alaeidon TWP, Ingham Co., MI. The burial records for the Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason, Vevay TWP, Ingham Co., MI show that he bought six gravesites there. His wife is there, but the records don't show whether or not he is there. 4. In the 1850 U.S. Census for Ingham Co., he was listed in a hotel in Lansing, MI. Along with him was another man named Mark CHILDS. I assume that they were brothers. 5. He m. 24 Dec 1850, Mason, Vevay TWP, Ingham Co., MI, Hannah Jane CONVERSE, dau. of Hiram CONVERSE and Dearsa SMITH. Hannah may not have been his first wife, but I can't verify this. They had at least 6 children, list possibly incomplete: i. Hiram CHILDS -- b. 1852, Ingham Co., MI -- listed with his father in the 1870 U.S. Census, Ingham Co., as a farm laborer. ii. Stanley CHILDS -- b. 1853, Ingham Co., MI -- listed with his father in the 1870 U.S. Census, Ingham Co., as a farm laborer. iii. Mary CHILDS -- b. 1855, Ingham Co., MI -- m. E.H. PETTIS iv. Sarah E. CHILDS -- my g-grandmother -- b. 8 Sep 1858, Leslie, Ingham Co., MI; d. 14 Jun 1929, Lansing, Ingham Co., MI. She m. 30 Jun 1880, Ingham Co., MI, my g-grandfather, Walter Whitney WEEKS. v. Stillman CHILDS -- b. 1866, Ingham Co., MI vi. Wallace CHILDS -- b. 1868, Ingham Co., MI 6. He must have been conservative politically. For one year in the 1840's he was the publisher of a conservative paper called the "Ingham Independent." If there is anyone on the list who might have a connection to -- or information about -- John H. CHILDS, I would appreciate hearing from you. 1. [MIINGHAM] Mead, Root, Dague
    2. Hi Everyone, Some of our family moved from Ohio to Michigan in the 19th century. One of them was my gg aunt, Mary Jane DAGUE MEAD, born May 6, 1858 who married Orland E. MEAD, born May 1857. One of their children, Lula MEAD married Dr. Fred J. ROOT. I don't know the names of all of these relatives, because maternal names are often lost in families. Also, I know that a more distant branch of the DAGUE (DAGE, DEG, DEEGEN) family also moved to this area of Michigan from PA and W.VA. I am writing to ask if any of you know of a hereditary blood disorder in your family called Hereditary Sphereocytosis. My hematologist said that 50% of my relatives probably have this disorder because it is autosomal dominant. Sometimes this disease can be silent, as it had been in my family until my mother's cousin died of it (probably of a ruptured spleen) and her son and I were diagnosed with it and had spleenectomies. Sometimes Hereditary Sphererocytosis is so subtle, it can't be seen on a regular red-blood count smear. Apparently a regular RBC smear doesn't pick it up in our in our family, but a hematologist will know what to do to be sure. My hematologist said that he recently had a patient in his seventies who had no idea that he had this blood disorder until tests picked it up. Because even those who have the more serious form of the disease can have subtle symptoms, it can be dangerous if someone has it and doesn't know it. Hereditary Sphereocytosis is characterized by small, fragile, sphere-shaped red corpuscles and most people afflicted with it are of northwestern European descent. Sometimes anemia and jaundice are obvious with this disease, but sometimes, those symptoms are subtle, even in those who have the more serious form of the disease. This has been the case in our family. I would be grateful to hear from anyone who might have this disease in their families. One reason is that my hematologist has found some mysteries associated with my form of Hereditary Sphererocytosis that I would like to compare with others who may have some of the same difficulties. Another is this could be a great way to find cousins who have so far been lost because maternal names change and we lose track of family lines. This is a relatively rare disease, so it may be a good first step in finding cousins. My family was originally from Pennsylvania before they pioneered Ohio. 2. --WebTV-Mail-20531-90 Content-Type: Text/Plain; Charset=US-ASCII Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7Bit I can only speak to Leslie Cemetery---It is not tremendous but a good size I believe it is on Adams St.. The caretaker lives nearby---do not know his name---he is usually in the blding that houses equipment and has a book to locate graves. He sent a worker with us to show us the site where the family had placed a long overdue marker.. Leslie is quite small...so I believe anyone can direct you to cemetery..At the town hall (?) we bought a book that had been put together about some of the older Leslie families... The book was not too correct , I might add, but nice to see name in print. They were out of books when we got there, but we paid and they mailed . Stop at library or town hall...or find older resident---they usually love to chat... 1. [MIINGHAM] Johnson C. BAKER, Locke Twp
    2. Searching for information on Johnson C. BAKER, b. abt. 1823 in Stafford, Genesee Co, NY. I have no details of his early life, but on 26 Mar 1883 in Locke Twp, he married my ggg-aunt Elizabeth SPENCER ODELL, daughter of Wright and Sally JOSLIN SPENCER. Elizabeth, a schoolteacher, married (1) Reuben ODELL of Iosco Twp, Livingston Co, MI in 1871. Reuben died in 1878 and she returned to her parent's until this remarriage. I am hoping to locate any possible children of this marriage, and details about Mr. BAKER. Elizabeth is supposedly buried in Parkers Corners, Livingston Co, and I would like to know date of death and cemetery as well. Thank you for any ideas.

    1. [MIINGHAM] FRANCINE???/THAYER/MAWHINEY
    2. FRANCINE??? married name unknown. I am looking for my second cousin. Her name is Francine. The last time I saw her, she was married and had 1 son. Her mother's maiden name was Betty Lee Thayer, born in Marshall, MO. about 1934. I don't remember her married name. She lived for a while in Kansas City, with her aunt, my first cousin, Charlene Thayer Mawhiney and Earl Mawhiney. She also has an uncle, Charles Thayer, that was living in California. I met her once in KC. On their way back to MI. she, her husband, and son stopped at my house in Indiana. I also visited her once in MI in the 70's or early 80's. Her mother Betty was still alive at that time. I'm doing genealogy on the Thayer family. Trying desperately to find Francine. Maybe she has some records, also just to contact her and see how she is. Maybe we can reconnect. If anyone knows Francine or about her, would you PLEASE, contact me. Thanks in advance for your much needed help. Jan

You might not think this is a kind remark, however one must think of the consequenses should all this not be true.. and someone has ulterior motives to locate these people My husband was orphand in Mason Mi. Ingham County and fostered out as a kid. I believe anyone could locate him(males don't generally change their names) as he was not adopted and he was re-united with his siblings as a grown man. Try writing to the county in Mason Mi. --tell the situation---you will probably have to send a copy of your Mom's birth certificate or something to verify your reason for requesting this info. You could try phoning---In the daytime, I usually use the 10 10 321 (that one is half price) or 10 10 220---(99cents for 20 min.).. You mentioned Texas---try the local library---they may direct you to an organization to help you. If you are near Dallas they have one of the best libraries in the State. Don't give up. Someone will help you if you are sincere in your quest... PS I asked my husband if he knew of the name you requested---Sorry, no. 2. Sally J. Holcombe
    3. Thanks to a very generous list member from Mason, Ingham Co., MI, I now have pictures of the burial site of Hiram CONVERSE and Dearsa SMITH CONVERSE, Section A of Maple Grove Cemetery. Hiram CONVERSE -- b. 8 Mar 1798, Bridport, Addison Co., VT; d. 17 Sep 1859, Mason, Vevay Township, Ingham Co., MI; son of Alfred CONVERSE and Phoebe ELITHORPE. Dearsa, wife of H. CONVERSE -- b. 2 Jan 1806, possibly at Shoreham, Addison Co., VT; d. 29 Jun 1840, Mason, Vevay Township, Ingham Co., MI. I estimate that Hiram CONVERSE & Dearsa SMITH m. abt 1824-26, possibly in Shoreham, Addison Co., VT. It's possible that Dearsa SMITH's family was from Shoreham. Hiram and Dearsa were living in Shoreham in 1830. I would like to learn the names of her parents. Dearsa SMITH d. in 1840. I'd like to know if she was the first person buried in the Maple Grove Cemetery, Mason, MI. Is there anybody out there on the list who is familiar with the Maple Grove Cemetery records who would know when the first person was buried in the cemetery? Best Regards, Sally BOLSTER HOLCOMBE

I'm not sur who the first person might have been, but I know of several of my family that are buried there. My g-Aunt Codelia Sophronia (Smith) Hoag buried 7 Apr. 1881. Her father Henry Blaine Smith d. prob. in the 1860's and is pretty surely buried there, although they didn't record deaths until about 1867. It's also possible that Cordelia's brother Isaac D. Smith is also buried there. Floyd B. Smith
