They have some newspapers on microfilm/microfiche. The Ingham County News is available there and that could possibly be your place to look. The other paper could be the Lansing State Journal but I don't know where they are stored. Good luck.

By 1837, my g-g-grandfather Thomas S. Riggs was born in New York and Abner is there with wife/kids 1840 census Auburn, Cayuga, NY. They then traveled to MD for 1850-1870 censuses. I feel there is a connection in these families because of the Abner name, as well as other similarities. Have you happened upon another Abner b 1807 in your studies? Thanks in advance for any info. I have personally gone there and looked up several obits when I know the date of death. I have looked at old newspapers dating back into the 1880's. They are on micro-film by the city that carried the newspaper usually. I live in Delhi Township, which the mailing address is Holt, Michigan. It is next door to Lansing which I believe would have been the city to have a newspaper; they are the current newspaper for this area. I have not been to the Library in quite a while, but it certainly has been worth my time in searching there. They also have a death index and marriage index to look up old dates. They have tons of micro-film for census for the whole USA and a lot of old 1800's of Canada. There is no index for the Canadian census, you must know the area in which to look. In fact, most of one whole floor is for genealogy; tons of books and micro-film. http://www.michigan.gov/hal/0,1607,7-160-17445_19270---,00.html
Cindy, The only newspapers that I would know of would be either the Lansing State Journal or whatever preceeded it. I have Longs in my husbands side but do not have anyone that matches your information. If I find more information I will pass it on.

I am waiting on that one. It does not list her in any obits. My father did say she died in her forties. So that would put the time frame from 1951-1961. I think she died in her early forties but can't say for sure. i did know she lived in Alma, Michigan in 1936 but I've lost her after that. At ome time she was in Saginaw. Anyway thanks for your help. Surnames: Long, Cole Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/hFB.2ACE/1666.1.1 Message Board Post: Thomas Kerwin, Yes, the Jennie Long in the 1910 Census age 83 (died February 8, 1919) is Jennie Cole, the widow of Dennis Long (died July 10, 1899). (I do have her in every U.S. census from the time she came here from Canada in 1851). I'm hoping to find obituaries for Jennie, Dennis, (death dates listed above) and for William Long who died August 1, 1888. I do have Dennis and William's death certificates which list their parents, (William Long and Abigail Smith, residents of Canada), but do not list their siblings. I am hoping to prove, through more than circumstantial evidence, that William and Dennis also had a brother living in Ottawa Co. Michigan, a sister living in Wisconsin, a brother living in Hastings, Ontario, and a brother and sister living in Orleans Co. NY. An obituary that names the siblings would be a goldmine. (I'm also interested in Jennie's relationship to the Coles. Abigail Long was living with James Cole in 1860 in Delhi, Ingham Co. Michigan and Catholine (Long) Alderson's son, Edwin Alderson, of Orleans Co. NY, married James Cole's daughter Emma.) I have Catholine (Long) Alderson's obituary, but it names only her husband and children. I'm certainly not assuming that an obituary was published for everyone, but of the many that I have, only one has been a paid obituary. And each of the people that I've named had a large monument on the gravesite, so I doubt if the cost of an obituary would have been a deterrent. Back to my original question. What newspapers would have carried obituaries from Delhi and does anyone have a telephone number or address of a library or other service which would have those newspapers archived? I live in Alabama and have made one trip to Delhi, long enough to visit the cemetery, but not long enough to hunt down a library or address any of my other questions. Hoping to return there in November, armed with more information. (I've requested look-ups from the look-up volunteers listed on the website a few months ago, but received no replies.) Name: Jennie Long Age in 1910: 83 Estimated birth year: abt 1827 Home in 1910: Delhi Twp, Ingham, Michigan Page: 40B; Enumeration District: 54 I don't know why everyone assumes that an obit. was published for a family member beginning in 1850 thru 1930. Obit's cost money and every family did not have the money to have an obit. to published. You must think as though you lived in that selected time-period. The best idea I can suggest would be - purchase the death cert. from the county = not from the state. MICH. charges - $26.00 for a death cert.

I have gotten marriage records in the past to obtain maiden names. In this case I know the maiden name of my relative but not her married name or date of marriage. I am trying to verify that a name I can across recently could be her married name. She was divorced at some point so I was wondering about the divorce index and records.

If so, you might be able to find a copy of their obit which often contains the names of survivors. If you have the death info on either brother, you might find the same information. If you know a death date, the State of Michigan Library has many many rolls of microfilm of newspapers from all over the state back into the 1880's.
