The only James McDonald I could find on the 1880 census close to the right age was a carpenter married to Jane McDonald with a one year old son named John F. McDonald, born in Canada. Jane must have died before you found him living with Sarah in the 1900 census. If you can find the family in any later census, I would appreciate it. William L. age 34, single, born Canada, foreman at button company. 1920 finds a Jessie, age 39, born Canada, boarding with a William Curtis and wife Matilda, stenographer at club(?), states immigration as being 1903, AL which I think stands for Alien.
