    3. Many of my Scot ancestors seem to have wandered back and forth across the border. Since they all came to the UP and Lake Superior is in the way, does anyone have any thoughts about how they may have come in? Marion Markham

    3. A ferry would have been the easiest I would think. Many ferry services at that time, with out records to gather names from, but for newspaper articles of local comings and goings. Border crossings didn't get recorded by the government until the mid 1890's. After that they are on film and listed under St. Albans Border Crossings. There is a soundex to the files so you can order the right film in. The films themselves that I have around are very hard to read on some of the manifests, but they are the first two films. The earliest two films only contain people coming into the ports at the mouth of the St. Lawrence. Here is a list of what is available on film with the order numbers for the NARA or the LDS FHL. http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/glpassengers/sources.asp There was by train too, but that would have been hard to do and out of the way and a much longer trip then considering Houghton Co.'s location.
