My grandfather and great grandfather came from Michigan to Lancaster County Ne in 1877 and I found their Michigan naturalization records in with the local Nebraska applications. Perhaps they had to prove they were citizens to vote or something of that nature. It is a long shot but I was surprised to find a number of Michigan applications in with our local ones. Also would heartily recommend the book "Beyond the Boundaries" by Larry Lankton. It does not give a lot of family information but is a great book to find out about the life in the UP from 1840-1875, I ordered it through Barnes and Noble but I would guess any book store could do the same.
