    2. Just a comment on missing husbands-- I have found a few sometimes by widening the search. Of course, he may just have some job that takes him away a lot. But the ones I recall specifically, were guys away at some institution. These were especially veterans in some kind of home, a tip-off to look more for their military records, and occasionally in insane or tuberculosis asylums. Some of the veterans' homes were in other states from the rest of the family. Also, most of the immigrant communities just didn't really do divorce, so couples sometimes simply went their separate ways. I also wonder if the name Mendelin might sometimes be shortened to the more common Mendel (in fact, in German, the "-in" ending is a feminine ending in old times, so wife/daughter have name Lexin, guys Lex, for example). Here in Minn., I have found some men going up to lumber camps in the north for the spring/summer season, though living in the city in the winter -- but the census was during the time up north.
