    3. Does anyone have information, or know where I can find information, on the St. Stanilaus Kostka Benevolent Society which existed in Calumet at the turn of the century? Apparently it was a good-sized group, primarily of Polish origin or descent. I understand it had 116 members in 1896, and in 1903 it met at 315 Seventh St. They met on the first Sunday of the month those years. Does anyone know where their membership records might be? Would they be among the church archives? Did they have a 'national' office? I am getting desparate to find my gg-grandfather's home village. I am hoping that perhaps in their membership records they may indicate from where in Poland he may have come. I have exhausted just about every other US record (marriage, death, census, etc.) I can find. Here's hoping, Kathy

    3. Hello Kathy, The M.T.U. Archives in Houghton had the 1887 articles of association for the Polish Benevolent Society of Hussars of John Sobieski the Third of Calumet of which my great grandfather was a member. It listed only the names of the officers of the group - John Lenz, Stanislaus Kowalski, John Wieczorkiewicz, Laurence Wroblewski and James Yankowiak. No membership lists were located. They also had the articles for the same group again in 1905 with officers John Labyak, Michael Siemowski, John Bolinski, Jozef Ryback and Tomasz Slominski. No membership list located. The R.L. Polk's Calumet and/or Houghton County Directories listed many organizations. I checked the M.T.U. Archives, and they located these documents. It might be worth trying the Archives to see if they have the St. Stanislaus Kostka Society you are seeking. If the group was part of the Polish Roman Catholic Union, you might find the society located at the P.G.S.A. web site which has both a list of societies and a list of insurance claim files. I obtained one of the files for a deceased person which included a death certificate. It has a good number of Baranowski folks listed, but the database for searching the list of towns and the number of the organization is not working today. Find both here: http://www.pgsa.org/prcu.htm Best wishes.
