I know there was a Hercules powder plant up there somewhere--my dad Ed Mansfield and his brother Joe worked there around that time. Hercules was originally part of Dupont, spun off around 1918, now part of Alliant Techsystems. Please let me know if you find out more. His trade was a machinist and he worked for a powder company. Could anyone tell me the name of the powder company. Is there any website or book that tells the history of this company? Did Houghton have a county directory in 1910? Thank you. ==== MIHOUGHT Mailing List ==== MIGenWeb Houghton Co. It was most likely the Atlas Powder Company and was located behind Dollar Bay. The most recent owner that I know of (the property) was the Smith family and they had a ceramics works out there. That was in the late 70's so is practically history in and of itself! One of my friends had her grandfather tell stories of dusting off his hands and having a small explosion right there! He developed tic de la roux (SP?) from that and it was very painful. ...Kathleen http://freepages.cultures.rootsweb.com/~kernow/kc1.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: John E.
