I am a direct decendant of Martin Flens. montdc@tds.net. I am the great grandson of Helen Flens (married to Casimir Malczewski (aka Casimir Maleski), moved to Grafton, OH). I spoke with my dad today, he said that he and his mom ("Aunt" Stephina's Neice) made a trip out to Buffalo to see them when he was young. He wasn't sure how many kids Stephina had, but he remembers Blanche and Hank, are you related to them? I'm curious if you have any more information on Victoria's death, it appears she died before 1920, as she was not in the census, living with Martin Flens. I believe (going from memory) that they moved to Buffalo and stayed some time with Sofia and Walter (Wolski). Also, My Grandmother Irene Malczewski (Maleski) (married name Irene Montgomery) had a sister named Elenor, who can be found in the 1910 census with Sofia & Walter, as well as Martin and Victoria Flens. The other interesting item to see is that Victoria was mother to 12 childern (9 whom were alive at the time of the 1910 census). And we only know of the 4 for sure (Helen, Peter, Stephina, Sophia), but I think that I had found that Agnes was also a daughter (unconfirmed - but originally found on familyhistory.org) If you have any death certs, birth certs, pictures, writings, or anything that you can share, please let me know. I have a picture of Martin Flens with Sofia and Walter. I also have a post card written in Polish to his Daughter Helen at Easter time the year following Victoria's death. A side note, it's been rumored that Victoria was a decendant of either polish or russian royalty. I'm not sure how true this is, but it may be something to go on for futher research. The one thing that I noticed was that the 1910 census mentioned that Victoria originated from Russian Poland. The first record is indeed my lady I' had that one), but I've never seen the Michigan marriage records. It's so funny that Anna Holland came up. I took a look in the 1880 census for all the Anna/Annies's I could find in Hancock in the right age bracket and she was one of only three that could fit (since her parents are both Irish). That's really eerie that she married a "Roy" from Canada. I don't think this is them, but it is just SO odd - so coincidental... I'll keep this in mind when I'm looking through things. Thanks so much for the help. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. Author: JDJames89 Surnames: Ray Pearce Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.houghton/4899/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Hi there. I'm not really expecting anyone being able to help me find anything at the moment, but more perhaps suggestions. I am not acquainted with genealogy sources (particularly online sources) for this area and I am working with a frustratingly small amount of useful information on my Great Great Great Grandmother Annie Ray-Pearce. Annie was born on August 7th in the year of either 1874 or 1878 in Hancock, Michigan. I know from later census records that both her parents were Irish and that, as of 1897, she was married to a man named Andrew C. Ray and gave birth to a daughter in Butte, Montana. Andrew died a decade later and, eleven years after her first husband's death, she remarried, again in Butte, to an English man by the name of Edwin Pearce, whom she preceded in death on January 14th, 1949. Aside from that, I know nothing about Annie's early years (including her maiden name). Her death certificate is mostly blank and gives and no information on her parents. No records exist for the birth of her first child, and odds are that the marriage is too early to have been recorded either. There is the chance that her second marriage (the certificate of which I am currently pursuing) might include a maiden name, or that of her parents, but there is also the chance it just lists her as Mrs. Annie Ray, as the announcement in a 1928 newspaper did. I would say, though, given Annie's age at the time of her first marriage, it seems unlikely that she would have come to Montana alone, and I think it's likely that her parent's or some other family came as well, maybe for mining (as were most people, particularly the Irish, at the time). If anyone knows of any very early Hancock records (which I'm aware might not even exist anymore after two devastating fires to the city), or any other good sources that might be able to help me out in tracking down a family in both Hancock and Butte records, I would be extremely grateful. Thanks. Important Note: The author of this message may not be subscribed to this list. If you would like to reply to them, please click on the Message Board URL link above and respond on the board.

Tormod, With just a quick search, I did not see them in the 1900 census (the 1890 was mostly destroyed). I think you will have to give more information for a better search. It is the usual that Gulbrand would change to Gilbert, and probably Marit to Mary, sometime Martha, but not always. But, also they could have used Gullbrand's patronymic name (or sometimes of the sons), so you need to give that. It would help to have years of birth for all of them, and where each was born -- Norway or Michigan or whatever.
