While they do have wireless internet I do limited genealogy during my time there. As a reminder, you call call any local cemetery and ask for burial information. I talked to a person in the office at Lake View in Calumet, and I was told that he would charge me five dollars each time I asked for a burial so I no longer can do this. I tried to explain that I was a volunteer and did not make any money from it but he said that was his instructions. He does not charge the public who look for family there. Subject:Add Your Names to the Virtual Surname Wall ----- Original Message ----- From: Paula Hinkel Sent: Monday, May 18, 2009 4:05 PM Subject: Add Your Names to the Virtual Surname Wall Have you heard about the Virtual Surname Wall project sponsored by the Southern California Genealogical Society? The Virtual Surname Wall is a free website where you can enter your surnames and can look for cousins. The Surname Wall project is free and open for use by all family historians and genealogists. You need not be a member of SCGS to participate. We are in the process of adding submissions to the file, and now is a great time to participate in this project. Your entries will be added to the system and be online within the next month. Access the Virtual Surname Wall at www.scgsgenealogy.com. Click on the Virtual Surname Wall icon on the right hand side of the page. To see if any of your surnames are listed: 1. Click on the link to "Search the Virtual Surname Wall." 2. Search by surname, location, or Submitter ID or any combination of the three. It is a "begins with" search. For example, if you search for the last name Mill, it will return the names beginning with the letters Mill. (i.e. Millan, Millard, Miller). 3. Be sure to read the search tips that are listed on the searchpage. If you haven't yet added your names to the database, or if you want to add more: 1. Have your family information available for reference. 2. Click on the link to "Add Your Surnames" 3. Enter the following information for each surname you are reporting: Surnames (including spelling variations). Geographic area in which they lived, or the migration path. List your geographic information in order by city, county, state and country. To avoid confusion, please do not use two-letter state abbreviations. Time Frame. Use abbreviations (approx., or abt., or ca.) to indicate approximate time frames. 4. Submit as many names as you want. If you run out of room, click on the "Add Your Surnames" again. If you get a message that the survey has already been completed, just click "Take the survey again" and continue adding names. You may add ancestors from any geographic location worldwide. As entries are added to the database, the Virtual Surname Wall will become an even more valuable resource for family historians and genealogy researchers. You will not immediately see new entries but will be notified when they have been added to the Virtual Surname Wall. Check back often to look for a match. Your participation in the Virtual Surname Wall project is completely voluntary. Your contact information is not displayed online. You have the option of asking SCGS to serve as intermediary, or authorizing SCGS to release your contact information in the event that we receive an inquiry regarding a possible family connection. Please feel free to forward this email to your cousins, friends, fellow genealogists or others who would be interested in the Virtual Surname Wall project. Genealogy and historical societies are welcome to post this announcement in newsletters or journals. Reprint permission is granted but please include contact information (phinkel@scgsgenealogy.com). Here's to making lots of connections! Paula Hinkel Southern California Genealogical Society P.S. - and while you're at the website, check out the program for the 2009 Genealogy Jamboree, which will be held June 26-28 in Burbank, California!

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE- May 13, 2009 Contact: Marcin Chumiecki, Polish Mission Director, mchumiecki@orchardlakeschools.com, 248.683.0412 THE MICHIGAN HUMANITIES COUNCIL AWARDS $15,000 to THE POLISH MISSION (Orchard Lake)... The Polish Mission at Orchard Lake Schools announces it is the recipient of $15,000 to support two fall programs: The Polish Mission Commemorates 1 September 1939 and Celebrates SS Cyril & Methodius 1909-2009. The Michigan Humanities Council awards National Endowment for the Humanities grants to Michigan non-profit organizations. The funds will be used for The Polish Mission Commemorates 1 September 1939 and Celebrates SS Cyril & Methodius 1909-2009 events on the campus of Orchard Lake. The Polish Mission seeks to increase the community's awareness of Poland's suffering and strength during World War II and to spotlight SS Cyril and Methodius Seminary's 100th Anniversary at Orchard Lake featuring Polish pastors, parishioners and parishes of Michigan. The Polish Mission's funding will facilitate the creation of an exhibition catalog and events based on museum holdings. These museums were created by Polish war veterans who came to Michigan as Displaced Persons and lived their adult lives in Wayne, Oakland, and Macomb Counties. October is Polish Heritage Month and the fall event will document how Polish descendants impacted Michigan's farming, mining, forestry, industry, and politics. The Polish Mission will hold an old fashioned Polish harvest festival "Dożynki" on the grounds as a culminating activity. Additional information will be available at www.polishmission.com or by contacting The Polish Mission at 248-683-0412. The Polish Mission of the Orchard Lake Schools, founded in 1885 by Polish immigrants was established to preserve and promote Polish and Polish-American culture, tradition, and history for present and future generations. The Polish Mission organizes programs, courses and events that highlight Polish and Polish -American culture and accomplishments, and ensures a repository for artifacts, archival materials, works of art, and publications. The grant preparation and submission was undertaken by Michigan Polonia, LLC. ####
