Hi! For the first time I had the opportunity to visit the Upper Peninsula recently, when a friend driving from Boston to Vancouver, on I 94, kindly agreed to this "little" detour. We found the area so scenic & were thrilled with the beautiful Fall trees covering the road to Copper Harbor. It was so interesting to actually see small villages whose names had come up in research. What a magnificent view of Fall colors from our hotel window in Houghton looking across to Hancock. How convenient that MTU archives is right downtown & once we had cemetery information from there, to find Maple Hill Cemetery above the town. We were amazed at the size of the PETERS burial plot - approx. 16'X16' with a large stone bearing this surname, right in the centre. Then there were three smaller stones each with names & dob & dod for Thomas PETERS, wife Elizabeth PETERS(GEORGE) & unmarried daughter Catherine/Carrie. But where was their son William/George PETERS? We went to the Court House, also in down town Houghton -a beautiful building that looks like a castle, & found his marriage. His death certificate was kindly produced by a member of staff. George William PETERS & Jane/Jennie I. TRENBATH d/o James & Matilda, were married 2 July 1888 in Lake Linden. Accodring to census, they had no children. Both died in 1942 & we located their graves in another large PETERS plot in Lake Linden's Maple Hill Cemetery. We found many old & interesting brick buildings in Lake Linden & Houghton. As we were into Oct. the museum at Lake Linden was closed. Unfortunately, a huge puddle covered the road to the old Cliff Mine & being unsure of its depth we decided against trying to find the grave of Jane PETERS(GEORGE) & her children - all three of whom died in infancy, before her death, in 1874. (There are photos of the gravestones online thanks to the thoughtfulness of others & I thank you so much for doing this.) That left William PETERS, born 1839, bapt. Stithians, Cornwall, a widower, with a surviving child, Thomas PETERS born 29 Mar. 1870 in Eagle River MI. I believe young Thomas went to live with his aunt & uncle, mentioned above & with whom he is shown living in 1880 census, Schoolcraft. Not sure what happened to these two. There is a possible marriage - William PETERS & Annie DAVEY 21 Aug. 1880 Lake Linden. The age is right for him (40) & occupation - engineer & birthplace Cornwall & location. There is a Thomas PETERS living & working in Schoolcraft in census up to 1910 & an accidental death in 1911 but is this William's son? More research needed. Speaking of Schoolcraft MI. We went first to the town of that name south of Kalamazoo, seeking information on PETERS, puzzled as to why they would have moved to that farming area. The receptionist at Schoolcraft City Hall phoned a local genealogist & author, Harriet Schwartz, who on talking via the phone, eventually realised we were looking for Upper Peninsula & told us about Schoolcraft Co. which certainly made more sense. I mention this in case someone else may have made the same mistake. Author: shlomarosenberg Surnames: Zunich/Sunich Classification: queries Message Board URL: http://boards.rootsweb.com/localities.northam.usa.states.michigan.counties.houghton/146.2/mb.ashx Message Board Post: Here is something I posted elsewhere ... although it doesn't directly answer your question, it might provide some interesting tidbits ... Hello, I am descended from John and Fannie (Frances/Francesca) Sunich. Their daughter Frances had a daughter Oresa who had a son Clayton who is my father. This is what I know of their heritage: John Sunich (Zunich) was an Austrian Catholic who married Fannie Graylick/Graylich who was a Jewish girl from a small village in the area near Austria now known as Slovenia. Fannie converted to Catholicism and completely abandoned the practice of Judaism. As far as I know, the only daughter who knew of this was Frances, who told my grandmother. Most of the children were devout Catholics and the girls remained active in the Slovenian Society (I don't know if that is exactly what it is called). My grandmother married a Jewish man although they were never particularly active in any faith. As far as I know, I am the only actively (religiously) Jewish descendant of theirs, as my father married a Jewish woman. I never knew they had 11 children ... I know of 8 -- Ann (whose name was actually Clarice Anna), Sophie (Sophia), Gayla (atually Angelica), Pauline, Frances (Francesca Johanna)- who was my great-grandmother, Mary (who had MS and died possibly of Scarlet Fever), another deceased boy whose name I don't know, and John Jr. I know a few of their childrens' names ... Oresa, Richard, and Ed. I can't imagine there being another John and Fannie Sunich in Calumet, so this must be them. I would love to hear what you know. If possible, could you let me know? You're welcome to post it here or email me directly. Shalom, Shloma Rosenberg PS You may be interested to know that Frances Jr.'s daughter married the 1st cousin of Julius Rosenberg, who, together with his wife Ethel Rosenberg, was executed as an "atomic spy" by the US Gov't in 1953, although Ethel's brother admitted he was actually the guilty party on "60 Minutes" a few years ago.
