Proceeding with other children to meet his father who lives in the Allouez Location , near Lake Linden, the little boy sat down in the woods alongside the road while his small companions continued on the way. The youngster was tired and could go no further. He was cautioned to remain where he was and has not been seen since. One belief it that he has been stolen. The Nebraska newspaper might have just reported an incorrect name. Also, the strike went on for a while, so perhaps other women also carried the flag, and Big Annie did not carry it every day. There is just too much history, too many articles and also books about Annie to doubt that she was the woman most heavily involved. Greetings, listers— My g-grandfather, Philip Phelan, and other male members of his family were copper miners at the South Pewabic Copper Co. mine from Sept 1865 to Sept 1870. I know this from entries in a journal kept by Philip's mother. Because the family came from Ireland and then was employed by that company for precisely 5 years, I wonder if their work was by contract. Does anyone know if it was a common practice for copper companies to employ miners for a certain period of time, perhaps in exchange for paying for their passage? Thanks for any help. I've "rescued" an old photograph identified as that of John SULLIVAN of Winona, Michigan. The photograph was taken at the H. I. RADBRUCH Studio in Milwaukee, WI and is dated 1880. John appears to be in his teens at the time the photograph was taken. A partial note can also be seen on the back of the photograph, it appears to say "...or 1912 Milw.". I know that the photograph is older than 1912 so I'm guessing that refers to something other than the dating of the photograph. I am hoping to locate someone from the SULLIVAN Family so that this wonderful old photograph can be returned to the care of this family. If you are a member of this family, or you know someone who might be, please contact me. Thanks, Shelley
