Quote from Calumet Copper Country Metropolis, Oct 18 1901 The dangerous occupation of copper mining has again claimed two victims. Two brave and experienced Cornish miners, John Henry Glanville ,better kown to his associates as Harry Glanville and Josiah Seals were literally blown to pieces about 5;30 this morning in the drift south of the 49th level, No.2 shaft , Calumet branch of the Calumet and Hecla mine.
Hi, I just had a clue from the book on the Cemetery outside of Calumet by Kentala's farm.Alicia Quote, Sept.14 1900 Mr Max Gittler today purchased three acres of ground adjoining the town site of Lake View..The place will be nicely graded up and fenced in and will be used as a Jewish burial ground. There are about 40 Jewish families living in this vicinity and they have recoginzed the necessity for a cemetery for some time past and have been looking around for a suitable place..Heretofore people of Jewish origin who died in Calumet had to be taken to Marinette for burial, the cemetery at that place was the nearest Jewish burial ground to Calumet.
Hi, I bought the book.It is a peek into yesteryear. Please note the dates are from 1898-1913.This book contains bits of old newspaper reports. It does not contain births, weddings etc.It is newsy items. It has alot of wonderfuly pictures , not the typical same old ones that you are used to seeing. It has information such as some mining accidents, deaths, some murders, assults, events, socials, etc. I will check the index for names but i will not do a "bunch" of names. Please limit your names so i can do lookups for those who ask. Alicia An example, Page 63 Oct.1902 This morning is on the the Franciscan brothers of the Sacred Heart chruch went into the basement of the church from the parsonage to attend to the furnace he heard the cries of an infant outside. He immediately went out to see where they came from and found an infant about two days old nearly smothered in the clothes it was wrapped up in near the church steps.
In the early 1900's I had some of my Croze family move to the Minneapolis area, but not sure where in Minneapolis. I found some of my Finn family also moved to Minneapolis about this same time too. Again, other then being told they were in Minneapolis, I have no idea which Enumeration District to look for them on the 1910 census. Were there other Houghton Co, families that moved to Minneapolis? Was there a certain place they went too? I guess I'm just looking for a general idea where to start a search there and curious if there was a pattern with other families from the area. Kathy
Hi Clint - where is Mt. Calvary Cemetery located? Most of my Croze and Gagnon names I've found around Portage Twp. I have some Croze and Gagnon buried at Forest Hill Cemetery. I found their plots a few summers ago while I was up there. I would be interested in any Croze and Gagnon names you have at the Mt. Calvary Cemetery - are there dates as well? Peter is a name that is common with the Gagnon family. I also have a feeling there there was more than just the Miro Croze and Mary Gagnon connection. I think there were other Croze and Gagnon marriages as well. Kathy

William F. was born 1871, died 1928. Census records indicate he was born in Michigan. He was head of a lumber camp near Chassel and family lived in Chassel for a number of years. Maria Malvina was daughter of Narcisse & Mary LaBerge. I would also like any information regarding their births and deaths that anyone could share. The LaBerge family migrated to the United States from Quebec, Canada about 1887 and Mary LaBerge died in Chassel in 1913,
Loiselle not online. You have to either find a source in a library near you -- like if they have a good French-Canadian collection -- or order films from LDS. Hello, Would it be possible for anyone to lookup an obituary for me? The name of the person whose obituary I'd like is: Name: HUNTLEY, John Date of Birth: 1851 or 1852 Date of Death: December 1926 Location: Osceola, Houghton County. I'd be glad to cover costs of photocopying and mailing. Thank you in advance, --Chris __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? I, also, would be interested in a look-up in this new book for the surnames CLOSE, HODGSON, and SCHAEFER. If they are there, I, too, will purchase the book. Thanks. Alice in Arizona
If anyone actually purchases the new book would you be willing to check names in the index? Thanks. Patricia
You'll need Bridget's maiden name to use the Loiselle Marriage Index, if they were married in Quebec. But maiden names of both moms should be on church record. I'm sure I'm not the first to request a look up on the index. Hammes, LaRochelle, Seal, Kammerschen, Keppler, Schenk. Many others but if these show up, I'll buy the book. Thanks Linda - I'll check out that site you recommended. I'm sure I have it bookmarked from earlier references. I do know that Mary Gagnon's parent's were Peter and Bridget Gagnon. Peter was from Canada and Bridget was born in Ireland. I have also come across other Croze families in the area that were also from Canada and worked with the tugboats. I'm sure Miro is connected with these families as well. My mother-in-laws uncle (in his 90's) agreed they were related and he had heard stories when he was younger but couldn't tell me HOW they were related. The nearest Family History Center I had been going to was burned (in Lansing) earlier this year. So I'll have to find another place to go til they rebuild. I think that Miro Croze and Mary Gagnon were probably married about 1876 in the Portage Twp. area. Her family was living in Portage Twp in 1860 and that is where she died in 1888. Her parents and some siblings are buried at Forest Hill Cemetery. I haven't come across where she is buried yet. Thanks again for the help. Kathy
I finally found my husband's great great grandparents on the 1880 census in Portage Twp, Houghton County. From his great grandfather's social security number application and his death record, the name we were told was Miro or Miron Croze. He was born about 1855 in Canada. On the census he name looks longer than Miro/Miron and I'm wondering what that name might have been short for? I tried making a scan of the census page and played with the coloring to see if I could make it any clearer. Still having a hard time reading it. I'd appreciate any help. This Miro has been my brick wall for a while. He was married to Mary Gagnon (born about 1858) and she passed away in 1888. This is the first time I've ever found them together on a census record. Thanks -Kathy
