Hi Tuula was nice enough to translate one of the obits from the bible i bought. The first is a list of births and deaths recorded in it and an obit for Peter Huhta. I see the Pyykkonen name here too. Alicia Hello Alicia, Names and Finnish text goes like this: Frans Oskari Tammik.4 paiva 1884 died 1886 : Frans Oskari 4.January 1884 (he was born?) died 1886 > Juhan Kristijani Joulu.29 died 1886 : Johan, Juhani Kristian or Cristian (think that his name is written like this in Finland) 29. December (born ?) died 1886 > Kais Severnia 9 or 7 paiva v or u marrask.1885 :Kaisa Severiina or Severina 9. or 7.November 1885 > Jennie Lytia Huht.13 paiva 1881: Jenni or Jenny Lydia or Lyydia 13.1881 > Mattyar Artyre Heinak.3 :Martti Artturi 3.July > Frnas Jalmari Syss.13 : Frans Jalmari 13.Sebtember > Sigrid Edith Kesak.25: Sigrid Edith or Eedith 25.June > Juhan Alfred Mallisk.3 :Johan, Juhani Afred 3.March > Marja Effina mallisk.2: Marja Effina 2. March I try to write names like they were written in Finland ( there are several alternatives And the old obit: Peter J.Huhta Suoningi (Suoninki) born in Ylitornio (in Sweeden side) year 1846 so he was 79 year, 5 months and 26 days old when he died. He had living three boys and five girls, 3 daughters-of-law, 5 sons-in-law ,children's children have 33 children and they have 4 children (so Peter was gggfather) and also his sisters children who live in this country and Finland and his (In Finland Herra writen like this is God) liquorhill 's(viina=liquor and mäki=hill, and word was writen with small character, so it is not a placename, and I don't know what is it) workers. The last days he spent with son-in-law Mr and Mrs Pyykkönen on Chassell, Houghton Co.Michigan. His earthly wandering stopped (he died) 8.November 1925. Sleep peacefully after hard workhistory. Suoningi is it homeplace in Finland ? There are couple places in Finland like Suomenniemi, Suonenjoki those are very difficult to you say and read so I belive that places like that got "new name" in America. And that viinamäki with workes that is very odd, I don't know what is it. Perhaps placename. Tuula K

Hi, Has anyone on the list have the Lantto name? My great grandmother Briita Koski nee Hyttilä (real name is Sauvola)1850-1928, remarried an Isaac Lantto, 1847-1928 after she settled in the Copper Country.I want to complete the Koski ancestry on my Dad's side.I know nothing of his background. They lived on a farm several miles from the Calumet golfcourse in the boonies.I only have a birth year for Isaac. Thanks, Alicia http://www.thegreatthingaboutchemo.com/index.html
Just wanted to thank Kathleen for her special act of kindness. As many of you know I have been trying to learn about my great uncle's saloon-ice cream business. Kathleen sent me some pictures and a detailed description of the building (now JD's Boathouse). I just felt that I should let you know what wonderful people are found on this list! Thanks again Kathleen Linda in Florida
David, Try tracking them down in a census and then you'll know where to look for a marriage. The 1870 Census is online and searchable by head of household. Images of each page included at: http://envoy.libofmich.lib.mi.us/1870_census/ Michigan works on the county system for the most part so you need to find where they were first. The state indexes are on film at the state library but I don't think they go back to before 1867 when the state made it a law that all vitals had to be recorded and sent into the state from the counties. Before that it was up to the counties to keep marriage records. Other vitals were not kept before 1867. The county records are still the most reliable place to get records as opposed to the state. I have a feeling that some of the various Dupuis families from the Houghton area could possibly related in some way or another. Whether it be when they were in Houghton County or in Canada, some of these families may lead back to a common ancestor. If you have a Dupuis family, please send me your roots as far back as you can and I will compile all of them together along with mine to see if we have any relations. Thank you, Clint __________________________________________________ Do you Yahoo!? Faith Hill - Exclusive Performances, Videos & More http://faith.yahoo.com

Hi, Ansa Messner translated this obit from the Finnish-Swedish newspaper for me.I am passing it on for those who were interested. Thank you Ansa. Alicia in Calumet alicia@chartermi.net http://www.thegreatthingaboutchemo.com/index.html Broken links. Mrs Vendla Stone (born Hellman) passed away peacefully in her home in Dollar Bay, Mich., in the morning of December the17th after a long suffering from stomach cancer and tumors. Sister Stone has for many years been a keen advocate of temperance and a member of The Society of "Syskonringen" ("The Sibling Ring") since it was organised. Therefore the grief and the loss is big which could be read in all faces at the Society´s extra meeting held on the 17th of December in the evening. The following resolution was made: It was decided to drape the Society´s charter with a mourning crape for a period of 60 days; to honor the deceased with a beautiful wreath with the Society´s inscription; that all men of the society were to parade from the mourning house to the church and part of the way to the grave whereupon the journey was to continue by horses; and that her photograph with this resolution was to be printed in "Ledstjaernan" (The Leading Star"). By this we would express our grief for her mourning husband and relatives both far and near. Wintery winds lulling the flowers to rest XXXXXX ending snowcovered sleeping nest Blooming Vendla went so young from your summer into the still silence of heavy worldly slumber Sleep sister, sleep in peace Jesus will soon you awake Then wonderful light from the Father´s house the dark grave shall brake Translated from Swedish by Ansa Messner Stockholm, Sweden -- Finngen is managed by Genealogical Society of Finland. Also visit our home page at http://www.genealogia.fi/.
If anyone has access to the marriage records I need the date of marriage for Gus or Gustav Thompson to Joanna or Johanna (possibly Galivan) in the 1861-1863 period. Thanks David Strickland dstrickland@optekinc.com Dallas, TX
