    3. Sampson is indeed a French-Canadian name (odd as it may seem). You will have to find some other records to help you out on place, especially helpful would probably be church marriage records. Look at the link from the main Houghton County page for doing French-Canadian research in Houghton County -- it's wonderful! Linda

    1. [MIHOUGHT] Sampson family
    2. Laurie J. Bashaw
    3. I have a great grandmother named Mammie (Marie/Mary) Sampson. She married John Trudell 19 August 1901 in Calumet. They were Catholic. I have been told that her parents' names were Joseph Sampson and Adeline Tardiff and that they were from Canada (no place in particular). Mammie died 19 April 1922 in Calumet. In her obituary, it states that she is survived by a brother, Joseph Sampson, of Ahmeek. I am wondering if anyone knows anything about this Sampson family. I am trying to find out where in Canada to look for them. I would think Quebec, but don't know where?? Thanks alot for the help.......... Laurie Bashaw Ishpeming, MI

    1. [MIHOUGHT] circa 1900 letter from Michigan Mine SAMUEL BRADY
    2. Hi listers - I have been rummaging through an old box of "things" kept by my great grandfather Peter Olof Anderson. In it is a letter from Mrs. Samuel Brady, thanking the miners- employees- of the Michigan Mine for their 6 foot flower arrangment sent for her husbands funeral. It is very touching and nicely written, and I'm wondering if there are any relatives that might want to have a look at this - I could scan it and send it to you. I know I wish I could find letters that my relatives wrote to someone else! I'm not sure if the Michigan Mine was in Houghton - if not let me know and I'll forward this to the correct site. I do think my grgrndfather was living in the Houghton area at that time though. Thanks - Kris Johnson-Burrill Michigan

I thought others would like to know about it: First cousins share a common grandparent, while second cousins share a common great-grandparent, third cousins share a common great-great-grandparent and so on. In all of these cases, they are the same number of generations away from the common ancestor. With first cousins once removed, they are one generation apart, or removed, in their connection to that ancestor: In other words, one descends from the grandparent; the other from the great-grandparent. When we say that Lee Marvin is a 1st cousin 4 times removed of Robert E. Lee, this means that Robert E. Lee's grandfather was Lee Marvin's 4th-great-grandfather. Lee Marvin's 2nd great-grandmother, Ann Matilda Lee, and Robert E. Lee were first cousins. Rhonda R. McClure, Genealogist --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? Y! 1. Re: [MIHOUGHT] Mitchel, Mitchell, Michel, Bennett,
    2. I have some Mitchell relatives in Bruce Mines, Algoma County, Ontario. James Daniel Mitchell and his brother Abraham Mitchell were both miners and belonged to the Primitive Methodists. James Daniel Mitchell's wife was Elizabeth Nichols/Nicholls. She had some Bennets relatives in Cornwall if I'm not mistaken. Joni Leffler

    1. Re: [MIHOUGHT] Poem about Central Mine accident
    2. Hi, Ernie! Thanks for the insights! Since I have no details surrounding my ggg.grandfather's mining accident I don't know if there was a body to be buried. It sounds grisly, but perhaps he was killed in an explosion and the body was not recovered. I just don't know for certain exactly what happened. The obit of one of his daughters mentioned his accident, but didn't provide any further details. It just seems very sad to me that we can't locate any info. at all concerning what became of his remains nor any info. at all concerning an obit or death record. We're still trying to locate his wife's burial place also. Her name was Elizabeth Nichols/Nicholls, who died some time after 1885. Her maiden name was Richards. She was born in Cornwall also. Thanks again! Joni Leffler

    1. RE: [MIHOUGHT] Poem about Central Mine accident
    2. Hi Ernie, I just found out my Greatgrandfather Johan Winquist and wife Marie had a son called Anvik in Norway before emigrated in the mid 1870's. I cannot find anything on him myself.Since my g.grandfather was born in 1928 and died in 1888 it was many years ago allready. I too wonder where they buried this child.I have other family in Eagle Harbor but i did note that there are many unmarked graves and also many with Iron Swedish crosses but the writing has long since gone.My g.g is buried in the Schoolcraft Cemetery in Calumet, again in an unmarked grave. ( Alicia I have been told that the most likely burial place for someone who died at Central is the Eagle Harbor cemetery, however, I too, am looking for the burial record of a child, Emily Trevorrrow, died in the 18seventies, and have not had any luck. 1. Re: [MIHOUGHT] Poem about Central Mine accident
    2. Many thanks for the poem about the Central Mine accident, Christopher! My ancestor, ggg.grandfather William Henry Nichols/Nicholls, died on 4-10-1856 in the No. 2 shaft of the Central Mine and was the first mining casualty at the Central Mine. He left behind a widow with 7 children. We have never found an obituary, death record or burial place for him so if anyone on the list has any ideas how to locate this info., it would be greatly appreciated! Thanks again! Joni Leffler
