    1. [MIHOUGHT] Red Jacket
    2. I was just looking at the Cornish Letters site and read where in 1850 there was a riot in Camborne and they called in the malitia and they were called Red Jackets. Could it be that this is where the original name for Calumet (Red Jacket) came from? Ernie

    1. [MIHOUGHT] SIMOWSKI in Calumet in 1900
    2. Joseph Martin
    3. I am seeking Jan/John SIMOWSKI who came to the U.S. from Poland in December 1894. He appeared in the Houghton County Directories in 1895-1896 and in 1897-1898 boarding with his son Michael in Calumet. He does not appear, however, with his son's family in the 1900 U.S. Census. John's surname has been misspelled as SHONALSKY, SIMOLSKY, SIENNOWSKI, SIMOSKI, SIEMOWSKI, SIEMONSKI, and ZEMOSKI. If anyone on the list has access to records that might help me locate him in 1900 in Calumet, I would be grateful. That might help me find him in the 1900 U.S. Census. Joseph Martin Romeoville, IL

    3. We need your help and in turn hope to help you. A new section has been added to the Houghton MIGenWeb site. Surname and Veterans of Houghton Co. http://www.mfhn.com/houghton/submissions/Default.asp We can all exchange and find others researching the same surnames by using it and also our county military veterans can be listed here. I want to thank Betty (our dedicated volunteer who submits the obits for Houghton Co. listed in the vitals) for the idea of making a place like this and to those who helped with the testing of the programming, and catching the things I didn't. 1. Re: [MIHOUGHT] re: Passenger Lists
    2. Patricia Hamp
    3. Could be either through Canada or a US port. If they came in for the mining most came through a US Port but not all. From what I have seen more came through US ports from Cornwall. My Cornish families (Auger & Amy) came through Canada, but settled in Ontario first and parts of the family came to Michigan later but mainly to areas downstate as they farmed etc. We have not found passenger lists as of yet for the families coming in about 1850. The records for people coming through Canada to the US don't start until the 1895 on period. The government didn't think it important before then to keep track of comings and goings between the countries. After those dates the records are in the St. Albans Border Crossings group of films put out by the NARA. Before that you will probably only find a passenger lists to Canada from the archives there if coming via Canada. I have a site that I have been putting the St. Albans manifests as I get them done at: http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/glpassengers/trans.asp What I am seeing so far in the records is that many of the Finnish, Poles, Russians and Germans, etc. came through Canadian ports and not too many from England. There are some listings of people who's destination was the UP of Michigan BTW. There is a page of links to get you started at some of the sites that offer passenger lists online and also some informational links to border crossings. http://www.mifamilyhistory.org/glpassengers/links.asp Pat Hamp ----- Original Message ----- From: <Picky01@aol.com> To: <MIHOUGHT-L@rootsweb.com> Sent: Wednesday, December 04, 2002 9:10 AM Subject: [MIHOUGHT] re: Passenger Lists > Does anyone know where the Cornish embarked? I’m a genealogist just like you are. This is kind of long, but well worth reading! I found a way to use FOIA in genealogy to request records that actually results in moving your search along. In my every day professional work I use the FOIA (Freedom of Information Act) to acquire records from all areas. The FOIA is a tool that is available to everyone. The request is free but it can be very confusing. You have to know where to send it, you have to have the right request form, a properly worded letter, you have to know what type of information they need to get you what you are looking for. You cannot just send in a generic "find this" request. Using the proper request, the proper form, a properly worded letter you will get the documentation you are seeking. I received 84 pages in the first probate request, two weeks later, an additional 124 pages. All stuff they copied from microfiche. At $ .10 per page. Some of these re! cords went back to 1838. I will send you the forms (both State and Federal), the request letter, what you need to send them in terms of specifics, if you have them, or if not, where and how to find them. I have compiled a list of each State’s statutes and codes that you will need to reformat the request form for your particular State or the State you are sending the request to. I have included some specific searching directions and examples that may help you. For those of us who have been unable to get to an out-of-town location or to afford a researcher it's great. My email is genealogyprincess@hotmail.com or klawler@batorberlin.com. Please only use these for responses. I’ll be happy to answer questions! I will be happy to help anyone with any additional information or reformatting the forms for other states, other data requests, etc. Any other requests for help, I will send a form. I am requesting $6.58 for paper, copying, assembly, large envelope, and postage costs. This package of information is 22+ pages (and growing) -- and I had no idea this would be responded to in such huge numbers (!!). So, if you’re interested, send $6.58, personal check is ok, [Kathy Lawler] to Genealogy Princess, 20757 Camden Square, #210, Lathrup Village, MI 48076 or use my Paypal address [checking] for $7.00 to Genealogyprincess2000@yahoo.com. Either way, don’t forget your address!! I will send you the information the very day I receive your address and funds. Lastly, additional information, new ways I can come up with to use FOIA will be sent to you free of charge and I’ll also be happy to answer any questions you may have. This is strictly to get you! information that will help you gather documents and information to further your search for your ancestors. Thanks! Kathleen Lawler
