It was most likely the Atlas Powder Company and was located behind Dollar Bay. The most recent owner that I know of (the property) was the Smith family and they had a ceramics works out there. That was in the late 70's so is practically history in and of itself! One of my friends had her grandfather tell stories of dusting off his hands and having a small explosion right there! He developed tic de la roux (SP?) from that and it was very painful. ...Kathleen http://freepages.cultures.rootsweb.com/~kernow/kc1.htm ----- Original Message ----- From: John E. As I said in my earlier post, I am more interested in William's wife's side (Edwards) since this is where I fit in. All I know is that in the post with Richard Bastian's obituary, there a couple of grandchildren listed that match those of William and Elizabeth's children (Flossie and Clarice), so I pretty much assumed that William was the son of Richard (not 100%). It doesn't seem like there were really a bunch of Bastian's in Calumet, so I feel that it is a fairly safe assumption. William, I know was born in England (abt 1859) and very well could be Thomas' brother (?). I have been gathering some information on William and Elizabeth's children that is not listed yet on ancestry.com, but that is all the information I have on any Bastians.
Hi Barbara, I may have missed it but where did Frank die? (City/county?) I'm happy to check the US census online for you if you tell me where he lived. .........He might be listed as Francis instead of Frank...... Have you looked at city directories to see if they were living down the street from Rule or Bone relatives? If he was a miner I would suggest looking for mining employment records. I was surprised that the Calumet and Hecla Mines applications not only ask for parents names, some identify family members in Europe. It also tracks their employment and gives reasons why they left previous employment. Some ask when they immigrate. I'd like to help. Please tell me the last known address for Frank. BTW, Since he died in 1900 the employment record asks more questions then US naturalization records. They don't have useful information until after 1906. Ceil Subject: Re: [MIHOUGHT] RULE - Cornwall and MI > > I am looking for siblings of Frank Rule 1862-1900. Frank came to Michigan as a young man from Cornwall, England (per his obit). His parents were Samuel Rule and Mary Jane Wales. He married Agnes Bone on June 25, 1887 and a witness to the marriage was Eddie Rule. I can not find anything on this name. I have Franks death certificate and marriage certificate. Neither tell me the parish in Cornwall. I need suggestions as to finding siblings. I only have one Rule cousin that I know of and she has been very helpful getting me this far.
Barbara, It is a hunt isn't it. I started looking for my RULE's based on a family photo taken in Camborne, Cornwall. I decided to start with the 1851 census, since my John Rule left Cornwall in 1853 (based on info is US Census records). There were over 250 people in Camborne parish with the surname RULE that year, the largest concentration of the name that I have found in my parish searches so far. I looked in my extract for 1851, Camborne Parish and found only one Samuel Rule, age 3, to young to be Frank's father I think. Did Frank marry Agnes BONE in Cornwall or Michigan? You mentioned he came to the US as a young man, do you know when? Since he was born in 1862 in Cornwall, you might check the 1871 Cornwall Census for Samuel and Mary with a son Francis. You might also try looking in 1861 for Samuel and Mary, on the chance they married at least one year before Frank was born. If you have Frank's full birth date, you can search the St. Catherine's Indexes for F* RULE's born in the same quarter in the districts that comprise the various Cornwall parishes. Hopefully there won't be too many born in the same quarter. The birth certificate should list the parish where he was born. You can then use that information to target your census searches. Let me know what you learn. Cat Nielsen Berkeley, CA

Last year I started researching Alma Christina Svensson born 1871 in Sweden. She was my grandfather´s oldest sister and emigrated in 1888 to North America. I found out that she settled down in Calumet, Michigan and married Ernst Emil Tornquist. They had two children, Mildred (born 1895) and Ruth (born 1898), and lived in Calumet in 1922. I also found out that her daughter Mildred married Wilbert Bastian in 1922. Wilbert´s father was Thomas Bastian. He had as far as I know five children; Florence Maud (born 1890), Ella Viola (born 1890), Thomas Walter (born 1893), Wilbert Roy (born 1895) and Edgar Loyd (born 1901). I think that Thomas Bastian came from Camborne in Cornwall, England. Do you know anything of Thomas or Wilbert Bastian or any other connections to William Bastian? /Peter

He emigrated in 1853, and married Harriet Martin (B 1831 Kea parish) in St. Lawarence county New York. They migrated west to Wisconsin where two of John's sisters were living, and then to Ontonagon county where most of their children were born. In the mid 1880's they moved to Houghton County, the house they lived in still stands on M-26. In 1918 they moved to Alameda County, CA where their three surviving adult children lived, they died here in 1919.
