Connie: I go to the Redford Twp. ice rink on Wednesdays to skate and have coffee with a group of Yoopers, mostly from the Calumet area. One of them is William, ( Irv.) Kargela. He told me that Jacob and Kaisa Kargela were his grandparents. He also told me: He thought that Jacob immigrated to this country in 1888 The name on the grave marker for Jacob is Karkela, and his kids changed the k to a g, making it Kargela. Mamie Kargela and John Rowe were Dr. Ken Rowe's parents. Jacob and Kaisa had sons called Hjalmer, Eino, William (Irv's dad),Abiel (called Bob), and Edward, also daughters Ina and Mae. Ernie

Earnie, It is a lead I can follow up on. Do you happen to know what Cookie's real name was? I have found some information on the internet of a Verna and Emil Johnson. Could that be one and the same? Linda, I cannot confirm any of your information. However, My Aunt & Uncle Bob and Shirley (Yates )Makolin purchased a clothing store in Laurium that had been referred to as Johnson's Clothing store for as long as I can remember. I believe they bought the store in the late sixties or early seventies. The store still had all the old fixtures, desk and other furniture that certainly showed it was from the times you mentioned. I can't help you with Henry, but was wondering if Verna was the Verna Johnson who married "Cookie Johnson," who was a coach at Lanse and Baraga High schools. I played football with him at Calumet High School in 1942, and knew them both. I believe they are both deceased. Ernie

I have found a listing in the 1930 Census records for Calumet, Houghton County, Michigan for a Henry Johnson age 30, wife Lillian and a daughter Verna. Henry was a store manager in the dry goods department and a veteran of WW. The census also indicates his mother and father were both from Finland. I am wondering if this is an uncle of mine. My Henry was born December 31, 1890 in Calumet, Michigan. He was the son of Ephriam Kylmälä (Johnson) and Maria Erick Helisten both from Finland. His mother died when Henry was very young and his father later married Kate Kurtti Keskitalo. I would appreciate hearing from anyone who has any information about Henry. Thank you. Linda
